Fern isn't just diligent. This arc was crafted for the sole purpose of showing that Fern is a magical prodigy. It's very clear the author is planing to have Fern be the new Flamme.

The reason Ubel's spell is cool is because it only works in very specific cases. For example, against Wirvel's basic magical barrier Ubel's spell didn't work at all. It couldn't cut through at all. But against Sense it worked really well because Ubel could easily visualize cutting through Sense's hair. So it's all about compatibility. Ubel's spell is mid in most cases (like against Wirbel) but it's really strong in a few very specific cases.

Her cutting spell is short range, she has to be close to the target to use it. She would not be able to do anything to someone who fought at range.
