@@sandratestolinilembo3915 That is untrue. The DNA of the embryo is already established. No blood (or anything else) of the surrogate mother will influence the DNA of the growing foal. And yes, the foal will be considered a purebred Friesian and be allowed in the studbook.

RS needs other "boys" to be with, especially while he's still a young stallion. He certainly won't be joining the herd if he stays a stallion, he'd have to be kept away from the Frisian mares, and that would be difficult for everyone at this point. It'll be interesting to see what decisions Yvonne makes about whether or not to have him gelded, whether he'll be trained for dressage, etc.

Rising Star is so tight with his colt buddies at Stall G that he would be lost without his friends. Also it's true what others on this thread commented that he is a stallion and would be difficult to be around the Friesian and Shetlander mares with them all coming into heat at different times. He'd probably jump the wire to get to them. Spidey is not of age yet so I don't know what will happen when he's mature enough to be stimulated by in heat mares. Bjarni is fixed so there is no worry with him. He's so beautiful that he could have made wonderful looking babies.

I suspect that it might be an April foal which timing wise, it would be better for the foal than in July. I think that the transfer took place in May, and since they are pregnant for 11 months, that would mean April. Just guessing though! Edit - The embryo transfer took place sometime between April 1 and May 12, because Wunder was in the Video, but Peach was not born yet. so that would be a foal in late march to mid April, unless she carries it past the due date.

I’m completely involved in the lives of your individual horses. A few months ago, I stumbled onto “Love at First Sight”starring Uniek and the orphaned newborn, Rising Star, and have been hooked ever since. But I’m also interested in the science behind a surrogate pregnancy.: (If all goes well) will Uniek’s foal show any signs of maternal effect…changes from being carried by a different mother? Or is the fertilized egg already fixed in such cases? And will Uniek be induced to lactate, thereby getting to nurse and bond with her baby? I imagine that will be a step too far, but at least YOU will know it’s hers!

The embryo will not be influenced by the surrogate mother, they have separate bloodcirculation. Coralle will nurse the foal until it is weaned.

Lmao. Do you not understand how genetics work?! No, the foal will not change on a genetic level because it was carried by a different mare, and no Uniek will not lactate because she's not freaking pregnant! For all intents and purposes, Coralle will be the mom and Uniek just an egg donor (sounds harsh but that's the reality of it). Now, I could imagine some variety in gene *expression* seeing as both hormones and nutrtion play a part in that. Nutrition and at least some hormones like cortisol (stress hormon) _can_ in fact cross the placental barrier, but if all goes well such effects will be miniscule (and could happen with a biological mother just as well). If you want to learn more about this google epigenetics.

What wonderful news. How mamy weeks pregnant or since the embryo was implanted? This has a good success rate as commonly done to top competition mares that they wish to continue to compete or not risk a pregnancy that could end their career early. Amazing what they can so these days. Unique was such a good foster mum to rising star and I totally agree with Yvonne that she wouldn't put her through maybe losing another foal or her own life.

This is a very amazing way to make sure one can carry on the bloodlines of a mare. For so long the stallion's bloodline if a stallion could be carried on through generations, and of course any stallion could pass on his mother's bloodlines but that would only ever be 25%. Now with being able to transfer embryos we can now breed offspring from a mare long after a mare is able to carry. The one thing that always breaks my heart a bit is when a mare does produce and embryo that can be placed in a surrogate and it was a mare that really always loved motherhood. I have always seen Uniek as one like that, especially after she took to fostering Rising Star as if she gave birth to him. While we will all know that this foal will be Uniek's baby, she will not and will have no way to nuture or mother it.

Yes, but much of that drive to mother is from hormones produced during pregnancy. Luckily Uniek will not produce them, so unlike us humans, Uniek will not stress over it. She will happily watch from the distance while eating pellets and grass. 🧡🧡
