A new horse in the herd. The Friesian horses don't like that. Waloubet is not accepted now. The horses also have new neighbors. Who are they? They need to get acquainted. Then everything will be fine again.
We did not have Waloubet with the Friesian horses after this again. This is because Waloubet got scared and started to gallop back and forth.

It's odd that they accept Sjors, Rising Star as they look different but wouldn't accept Waloubet. I felt kind of sad for her,she seems so sweet. Cute picture of Uniek, Sjors and Rising Star, Rising Star has really taken to Sjors and Sjors seems quite comfortable with him. Beautiful Horses, Green Grass,Blue Skies;what a perfect picture. They'll probably come around, given a little adjustment time. It's not uncommon for first introductions to be rather heated in the horse world. It doesn't mean, they won't all get along just fine in a week or two.

That may very well have to do with how horses see some colors and not others. They only have two types of color receptor cones, but have no red cone receptors. This means they see colors in a much more muted palatte, unlike humans and birds that see colors much more vividly as part of our evolution that caused us ( as well as birds and some other animals) to have very discerning ability ro tell difference in color. Horses can identify some colors; they see yellow and blue the best, but cannot recognize red. One study showed that horses could easily tell blue, yellow and green from gray, but not red. Horses also have a difficulty separating red from green, similar to humans who experience red/green color blindness. Horses still see red things - they just appear as an intermediate color or even as gray. What this means when horses of different colors mix it may well mean that Sjors and Rising Star have 2 things going for them, one that they are probably seem as a very muted brown, much like any dark horse would appears to them while Waloubet stands out like a sore thumb, visually speaking, making her too scary to approach close enought to greet and to smell and get used to. The other is that Sjors has long ago been accepted by the Herd and since he does not breed them, but plays all the other parts, like any social animal grouping with a 'alpha' status type male, he would see all the foals as his and so would the herd, so a baby, now and then having his coloring (or in this chase shading) would not be that big a surprise to them. The other thing that Rising Star has going for him for acceptance is his mother who apparently is high on the social ladder with the mares. They know very well that they cannot pick on her baby no matter if the baby turned out to be some shocking color that they were frightened of, which they are not as, they see Sjors all the time. But it could be that one of the reasons for Rising Star being a bit slower in making the one on one friends early on and why some of the other foals were not too sure of him in the beginning. Its actually good that he is seen with Sjors now that he is getting older as that will help him integrate, color and all into the herd. Grey, and white are often the hardest to introduce into a herd has no other horses that color, even as foals because they either stand out or their color causes them to someone disappear into the background. Imagine how odd Waloubet must look to them if the grey areas fade off into the background of other colors that appear very muted to them, except for her darker markings which they would see moving about on a muted background.

I wonder if Sjors can sense that Uniek is almost in heat (the ultrasound showed she would soon be fertile) even as a gelding - or is it because Rising Star is a boy too and Sjors and RS wanted a companion (or someone to teach?) Idk, just wild guesses since I'm not an expert by any means!
@suzanneyoung8011
@suzanneyoung8011 2 жыл бұрын
@@pamelameckley5040 I think they do not view Sjors as a threat. They've gotten used to him, and he doesn't compete with them for a spot in the pecking order. As for Waloubet, she is different and new to the other mares, so they don't accept her, and she is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. She is in foal, so it's probably best not to stress her out too much if she's constantly being run around and not allowed to eat in peace.

Poor beautiful Waloubet not accepted by the three horses..... It is so odd that she lives in the barn with them but they have a mental block to her presence. Watching the horses all interacting with one another is just so beautiful and refreshing. Life is clear cut to horses. Geertje is just a stunning young mare and it will be so exciting to see if she gains full Crown status. She did her mother proud.

@@sybilmcpherson2240 I think the mothering instincts are too strong to care about coat and they still like Sjors but maybe he's a bit outside female hierarchy and Walou isn't. So that may make her extra strange to them. And yes Sjors may feel familiar with RS but then he probably grew up around them and his mom looked the same. Plus it seems like RS is just a bit more interested in humans than the frisian foals are and horses are great at picking up tiny signs.

Ah well...even long-term, established herd members have to deal with being chased off and bullied for days, when they've been away for training/inspection for a couple weeks. There are several videos, showing that. It seems, that being familiar with each other isn't enough. They actually need to be together in the pasture to actually become a herd and it almost inevitably seems to take a period of 'fighting it out'. Let's wait and see...they may all just get along fine in a week or two.

Well that was a fail. Why don't you put Waloubet in a Meadow with Sjors. Or maybe Sjirkje. What I'm trying to say is that her being with other calmer horses who accept others would be Better. Sjirkje and Sjors are both good for that. They don't mind others. Frieda and the two are young mares they have a habit of teasing others. But I totally understand why you decided to put her with them. Being with foals or being with 9(8 Poor Myrthe) yearlings and 2 year olds would be much more chaos so it was a nice decision to let her with these three.

I don't quite understand this nose-blowing thing they are doing, but it sounds interesting. Could you elaborate a bit? Why doe they get benefits from each others nose-breath instead of just using their own nose and be done with? How odd and mysterious horses are! Always something new... By odd I mean: how do they all know this is what's done? Who told them? I remember when they were foals...how did they learn this procedure to smell each others nostrils? :)
@2cutepups767

A horse is using its own nose to smell the breath of another horse which comes from the 2nd horse's nose. They learn things about that horse from its breath. Yvonne has done the same thing with a horse by gently blowing from her mouth onto a horse's nose. She has said they're becoming friends. It's a way of getting acquainted and is probably instinctual since Yvonne does this with foals.
