If you noticed, he only referred to everyone, like with Krillin, Tien, and Roshi before this point, by nicknames like "old man", "three-eyes", or "baldie", or "Goku Jr." for Gohan. The reason Gohan prefers using Mystic rather than his super saiyan forms, is 1) bc Mystic is equivilent to about SSJ3 level. 2) And when in Mystic, he can fight without having to maintain a transformation because all of his power is in his base state.

Now, if goku were in gotenks situation, he probably would have been beaten in a similar way to gotenks (both in base ofc).
