Peter Vincent's name is a dedication to two horror icons: Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. Peter Cushing, best known as Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars, played a vampire hunter in many British horror movies of the 60s and 70s. Ashleigh, the garlic thing can be a few things as Vampire lore is not set in stone. 1. Moms used to hang garlic around their daughter's windows to keep boys away during the night. This leans into the sexuality of Vampires. 2. Garlic is a known purifier of blood. I guess this could extend to purifying of evil in the blood as well.

That seems to be the thing in Hollywood entertainers, right? The actors that play villians are usually the sweetest most humble people while the ones that play the likable characters are usually jerks. Radar and Frank Burns are prime examples. In real life Gary Burgoff (Radar) was aloof, paranoid and standoffish and didn't get along with the cast and he played the character everyone loved. Larry Linville (Frank Burns) played the a-hole in the show but was the greatest sweetest guy in real life. I guess actors don't feel like they're acting unless their going against type.

You sound crazy, but that's why we love you, Ashleigh. BTW: 1.) It wasn't real holy water. Peter told Jerry in their phone call that it would be just tap water. Remember, Jerry said he was a born again Christian and didn't want to do anything blasphemous, so Peter assured him it wouldn't be real. 2.) Amy looked like the reincarnation of someone Jerry loved a couple of hundred years ago, so that's why he liked her. 3.) Originally Evil Ed was going to be in the sequel , but they couldn't get the actor back. So they redid the plot to revolve around Jerry's sister showing up for revenge. BUT, there was a series of Fright Night graphic novels that did have Evil Ed in them. 4.)The caretaker, wasn't a vampire, but he was more like a Reinfield character that was given some of the vampire's powers to help him protect Jerry. 5.)I always thought that Ed survived because Peter Vincent pulled out the stake when he should have left it in. 6.)Yep, in some legends, vampires could turn into wolves. 7.)And, finally, the bit of fun trivia. That final skeleton prop that was used when Jerry was burning, was actually a left over prop from "Ghostbusters". It wasn't used in the final film of "Ghostbusters" because it was deemed to be too scary for that type of movie. So it was put in storage until something else came along. They never explain the vampire's day-walking servant. The tradition doesn't really have such creatures but the modern stories have servants of various abilities. A lot of them are called Renfields after the character who was mentally enthralled in Stoker's work. They are like humans with borrowed powers or enchanted beings. This one could have been another supernatural creature or a human thrall with enchantments placed on him. There's also a possibility that he was a voluntary servant and got powers by staying with the vampire. Other things from Wallachian folklore that he might have been: Moroi - offspring of a vampire and a human who can walk by day Dhampir - another kind of offspring of a human and vampire Zmeu - a monster who can take human form and work with or for a powerful being. Sort of an ogre, or sometimes a dragon. Strigoi Vii - humans with special powers. Sânziene - fae folk who aren't usually in league with darkness but might get pulled in. Wallachia being the source of Dracula. There's probably a longer list from the Balkans and Eastern Europe of potential monsters. I think the writers might simply have made him up to fill the role without resorting to any specific folklore.

The sequel doesn't get much recognition although it's a *very* worthy one. And the remake from 2011 is one of the very few that respect the original, yet go their own way - and actually work. Billy was Jerry's human servant. He died from the gunshot, so Jerry temporarily raised him as a zombie. And Amy flinching before Jerry actually bit was just that: a flinch in anticipation because she expected the bite and was afraid of it. So Jerry did another round of foreplay to calm her down before he actually bit her.

One of my fav of this genre. Fun fact, Chris Sarandon had a cameo in the 2011 remake starring Colin Farrell, ironically he was one of Farrell's victims. From predator to prey.

I love the intimacy of this movie setting with them being neighbors. Also love the mood with all the fog. The characters in this are both grounded yet eccentric so that’s what makes this a top 6 horror movie for me. The Lost Boys is a vampire movie for the mtv audience of that time while Fright Night is a vampire movie for actual fans of horror. I’m surprised you said that you weren’t sure about this movie at first because from the very first scene with that exterior shot and Peter Vincent’s dialogue coming from the tv I was like yep love it already.

The visual effects for Fright Night were created by special effects master Richard Edlund, who also did the effects for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, and Big Trouble in Little China. The vampire bat effect in Fright Night was an effect originally intended for Ghostbusters that Edlund recycled for Fright Night.

"You sound crazy" I like that they incorporated the werewolf part to the vampires. You don't really see that too often as it's usually one or the other. The makeup effects in this still hold to this day! Kind of like american werewolf in London!

Had to hop over and watch this one on the laptop! I don't watch much horror, but with Roddy McDowall- one of my all time favorite performers, I wanted to give this one a try. Roddy based his performance on Burt Lahr's Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz for his cowardice, and was supposed to not be a good actor until the very end when he finally became true to himself. He also mentions during the phone call to Jerry with Amy and Ed that he's going to lie about having it blessed. Fun trivia: Charlie's street was filmed on the Disney backlot - you can see the preschool next door to Charlie's in North Avenue Irregulars as a church, and the best part: you'll see Jerry's house in That Darn Cat (the OG) over Roddy's shoulder when he comes storming up to the main character's house to find what he thinks are robbers, and ends up accidentally confronting her boyfriend with his duck hunting gun.

Also just a quick heads up. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is an homage to cheezy 1950s alien invasion flicks. It is intentionally cheesy. Like having fun with something so bad its good.

"You sound crazy!" Agreed wholeheartedly about practical effects. There's so many older movies I go back to and am just blown away by what they were able to accomplish. Whereas with CGI, you just don't really get that "wow" factor, even when it's done well. There's just something about makeup and props and stuff that hits different--especially when it comes to horror.

Chris Sarandon’s charms also worked on Susan Tomalin, which is why she became Mrs. Susan Sarandon. They were married for about 12 years, and she decided to keep the last name when they divorced, since she was already professionally recognized as such. Billy obviously isn’t just a normal human, but probably some kind of ghoul or thrall (which have a lot of variation in lore, like vampires), given some similar powers (presumably lesser than his master’s power) such as greater strength, resistance to being permanently killed by most conventional means, and possibly undead halted aging, but able to function as a daytime guardian for Jerry.

Chris Sarandon was one of my first crushes, mainly because of this movie. The guy who turned into a skeleton was just a ghoul and I maybe thinking of VtM rules but I think the wooden stake just paralyzes them. It's funny you mentioned the age gap because it's the same as Twilight xD.

In "The Hunger" (1983), Susan Sarandon has an erotic encounter with a lesbian vampire (Catherine Deneuve) In "Fright Night" (1985), Amanda Bearse (as Amy) has an erotic encounter with a vampire played by Chris Sarandon (Susan's first husband). In 1993, Amanda Bearse came out as a lesbian. I rest my case, lol.

Ashleigh, you sound crazy!! Back in the 70's and 80's (maybe later, too), us highschool kids did 99% of our own car repairs and paint & body work---at least in SoCal where I grew up. So, EVERYTHING was a "work-in-progress". If our parents weren't rich, we'd go weeks, sometimes months, before finishing. Driving with patches of "primer" on your car was almost a badge of pride--we did it ourselves!! That scene brought a FLOOD of memories. You just don't see that anymore....

YOU ARE SO RIGHT ON, Brother! My 1960's Jr. High & HIGH SCHOOL DAYS in SOUTH TEXASS were ones of helping guys with cars & Pickup Trucks that needed repairs & Lots of 'BONDO FILLER', SANDING, & SPRAY PAINTING PRIMER'. Repair Shops wanted too much money, so we all helped our friends out with their used cars everyone bought. Those days are gone THANKS TO FIBERGLASS ORIENTAL IMPORTS with STUPID COMPLICATED COMPUTER-POWERED DEATH MOBILES these Days. SCIENCE Marches On, everything is too complicated for all US "MR. FIX-ITS" to do anything about it. So SAD!

Nice reaction. Not the scariest, but a well made classic and a lot of fun. One of my favorites. You sound crazy. Trivia Time: - Jerry liked apples because he was a 'fruit bat' variety of vampire. - Billy was Jerry's familiar. Familiars are human or semi-turned servants who protect the vampire during the day and do their bidding. When Peter Vincent shot Billy, he killed him. Jerry reanimated Billy's corpse. - Amy was saved because she had not yet drank human blood when Jerry was killed. Evil was not saved - meaning he had tasted human blood prior to Jerry's death. - Jerry told Peter Vincent over the phone that he would not drink real holy water due to his faith. Peter promised to use ordinary tap water. When Jerry held the water vial in front of the fire, he was checking to make certain he was not detecting holy water. - Wooden stakes are not a permanent death for vampires. Pull the stake out and they live again. Rookie move by Peter Vincent to pull the stake out of Evil. Later, when Peter hammered the stake into Jerry's heart, the stake wasn't deep enough so Jerry could pull it out. - Vampire hypnotic powers have an erotic euphoria affect on their victims. - Chris Sarandon was Prince Humperdinck in 'The Princess Bride'. He was also Susan Sarandon's ex husband. She kept the last name. - Roddy McDowall (Peter Vincent) was a major actor with an incredible career. He would have been an Oscar Winning A-List actor (from 'Cleopatra') except for some award paperwork errors. He was also one of my favorite actors when I was a kid. - There is a 'Fright Night' sequel as well as a remake.
