The absolute brilliance of this film is the fact that for about 80% of the film, it's just Cusack on screen... Just one actor, yet he manages to keep you captivated. I can think very few other films where for the majority of the film it is just one person on screen. It really speaks to his ability as an actor to be able to keep you glued to the screen.

@@KlingonCaptainThere are two where he lives and two where he dies. The second one where he lives, he plays the tape just like at the end of this version, except his wife can't hear the daughter. Then the first ending where he dies shows him popping up in the rearview mirror of Samuel L Jackson's car when leaving his funeral. The second shows his manager getting a copy of the book he wrote while he was in the room, but thought he was out. So this ending is definitely the best imo.

1408 is in one of King’s compilation books called “Everything’s Eventual.” And he actually wrote the first half of the story for a class he was teaching on how to compose a short story (character development, setting, atmosphere, etc).He had no intention of completing it. He says that that decision always bugged him though and eventually he just had to sit down and figure out what happens to Mike.

Well for next year's Hallowbeans, if you want another scary movie involving John Cusack and a hotel (or I guess in this case a motel) then I highly recommend the 2003 film "Identity" He's in it alongside Ray Liota, and several other people. Also the movie has one heck of a twist ending, (for those of you who have seen the movie, DON'T SPOIL IT!)!

The original short story takes a VERY different approach to what happens once Mike's locked in the room. Rather than having ghosts jump out at him, the room just slowwwwly rots his mind into madness in a way that's really eerie and unnerving. And then eventually the walls and floor of the room start sagging and swelling and melting, and he realizes that the room is in the process of literally digesting him, like a meal. He still escapes using fire, but not by burning the room - instead he sets HIMSELF on fire, and the pain snaps him out of the madness long enough to crawl out the door. He also suspects that the room let him leave because it didn't like the taste of cooked meat!

@dlweiss
@dlweiss 27 күн бұрын
@@itzakpoelzig330 Only speculation on Mike's part: he starts to perceive that the room is almost like a weak point in our plane of reality, and some ancient, inhuman, eldritch abomination is coming through and warping reality as it feasts upon humans that wander into it. But whatever's happening is beyond the realm of human comprehension, so we never get a clear, definitive explanation/description. Just the panicked thoughts of a half-insane man trying desperately to escape.

Yes, but I could sort of tell because the director's cut has a couple additional small scenes in it that give it away (him visiting his father in the nursing home when he's "out," for one), though of course she could have just not included them in the cut! I had my fingers crossed, though, because this is the ending I prefer.

We don’t rattle! 1408 is a deeply flawed adaptation of the original short story, which is a wonderful clockwork of ever deepening dread and madness. There is no kid, hackneyed motivations, no ghosts, no ridiculous acrobatics, and it’s so much the better for it- it’s a story about a slumming writer who believes in nothing cashing in on Ghosthunting, and finally finding something terrible. At least half the story is Mr Olin trying to talk him out of it, and it’s a masterclass in gently ratcheting up tension. If you can find it, Stephen King reads it, and it is easily the one audiobook that seriously disturbed me for days after. Hell, now I want to hear it again!

The movie loses me once the ocean pours into the room, although I do like the part where Mike shouts into the phone, "Why don't you just kill me?" and the room answers, "Because all of our guests enjoy free will, Mr. Enslin."

Yeah, I was surprised that she said that at the end too tbh. Every once in a while, you can tell when Ashleigh is gonna dislike a movie judging by her reactions or if she isn't paying close enough attention & misses something critical to the story but there have been times where based on her reactions, it seems like she enjoyed it or had fun with it but she didn't like it that much or as much. That happened with the first two Home Alone movies among others. I haven't seen her do that in a while, so when she did that here, I was like: "Really? I thought she was enjoying it."

😏👍 The one scene in this film that made me chuckle the first time I saw it was at 26:39 when Samuel L Jackson appears in the refrigerator. It instantly reminded me of that scene in "Ghostbusters" when Zool appears in Sigourney Weaver's refrigerator. 😜

This is probably my favorite horror movie. Cusack is phenominal, of course, but I also love that the script places emphasis on free will. So many horror movies invalidate it, which just leaves me wondering what the hell we were doing for the last 90 minutes. I also love that it engages so many other emotions besides fear. But then, we don't rattle, do we?

We don't rattle. (But I just like code phrases, I don't need a game or anything.) This weirdly reminded me of the classic Twilight Zone episode A Thing About Machines, all the features of one place telling a man that he's not wanted. Back in 2006 there was a three-part miniseries called The Lost Room, not so much horror as wild supernatural phenomena. I suddenly wish I could watch that again.

@@susanberrier5727 I know what you mean, Ashleigh's done that plenty of times in the past though tbf, you'll think that she enjoyed the film based on her reactions but in the end, she would say that she didn't enjoy it. I remember quite a few reactions where she did exactly that, the first two Home Alone films for example.
