The Fright Night TV show in the movie is based on a real late night TV horror movie show from the 1970s called Fright Night that aired in Los Angeles from 1970 to 1981, hosted by actor Larry Vincent who starred as the host, Sinister Seymour. After Vincent died in 1981, the network revamped the show (pardon the pun) and relaunched it as Elvira's Movie Macabre, hosted by Cassandra Peterson as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, from 1981 to 1986.

This movie was the first time I saw Amanda Bearse before she gained fame as Marcy in Married with Children. As for Billy, he was a vampire servant who is someone who is turned by a vampire and is typically bestowed superhuman strength and can tolerate sunlight. But the way this film depicted it, he was more like a ghoul or a creature of the undead. Honestly, I think the film simply wanted to create some spooky moments by showing some level of immortality and they had some extra goo stock on hand.

I always took Billy & Evil Ed to be their version of Renfield. Sort of a reverse pastiche character; a deconstruction of Renfield, who was in thrall to Dracula but also his enemy. I imagine the filmmakers made Billy undead because it was a good way to incorporate the scenes of him reanimating after being shot, i.e. ratchet up the tension + his death = more cool practical effects.

Billy Cole was evidently a Vampire Thrall. He was bitten by the Vampire, and probably continues to be periodically, but was never actually killed by the vampire which would turn him into one himself. This leaves him in a state where he has some of the vampire's abliities and weaknesses, but not all, enabling him to move about in daylight and act as a bodyguard for the vampire during the day, all the while under the control of the vampire, forever a slave. He was more than likely very, very old which is why he disintegrated when staked. In the Bram Stoker story, Renfield was one such creature.

When DeCuir suggested looking at the residential street on the Disney backlot in Burbank, serendipity struck. The filmmakers found two houses-one a Victorian-positioned side-by-side. The street had recently been used for another macabre picture, Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). The houses were originally constructed in 1960 for The Absent-Minded Professor (1961), in which the film’s villainous businessman, Alonzo P. Hawk (Keenan Wynn), lives in what would later become Jerry Dandridge’s house. Throughout intervening years the houses would be seen in Disney films including The Shaggy D.A. I love part 2!! The side kicks to the vampire are way more fun in part 2. The lead actress in part 2 is way better and I had a major crush on her in the 80s.

The Lost boys is also a classic vampire movie. Roddy McDowell also plays a great role in a film called Class of 1984.

Welcome to Fright Night! This and The Lost Boys are the greatest vampire films of the 80s. Fright Night Part II is a fun sequel.

My favorite character, Charlie Brewster. Billy Cole I think was a type of half vampire thing. A guardian that can go out in daylight.

The remake is actually really fun. It's different enough from the original to still have a great time. Good cast. I miss Anton Yelchin 😥

Vampires (according to Brams Stoker's Dracula): can turn into Bats, Wolves, rats and mist. Vampires has lots more powers than they do in most modern movies (like they can control the weather, control "the meaner animals" all kinds of stuff)

Fright Night 2 is just as good imo. Very underrated.

Really? I thought it was just a lower budget rehash of the first one.

Vampire knowledge being "only from Twilight" isn't just embarrassing. This is actually a pretty good flick.

6:33 "Is that like a scream of passion?" That is so so close to a line spoken in response to a woman's terrified scream in "The Dirty Dozen" which, come to think of it, is a movie you should react to.

Earwigs? 🤣 It's funny for me because that's pretty much how I feel, too, those things freak me out. The interoffice symbol in my house is me, standing on the furniture, making upside down scissor fingers at my husband. He knows that means, "Murder the earwig before I wig out!"

I love this film, but the scariest thing for me is that Chris Sarandon is 80 years old now! Where have the years gone....

Evil Ed cracked me up in this film like between his hilarious laugh and his jokes! Another film that you should watch that has Chris Sarandon in it is Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. By the way I think Billy Cole was some sort of ghoul or zombie and favourite affect would have to be evil eds transformation. The holy trinity of vampire films would have to be this one, The Lost Boys and Salems Lot.

Yep have a special place in my heart for fright night with its great soundtrack. The movie 30 Days of Night is the best depiction of vampires I've seen on film, sadistic, violent, ruthless and relentless.

Billy Cole was probably what's now termed a ghoul. Someone who's got some vamp powers, without being a full vampire.
