I started applying more high/low pass filters recently after seeing one of your videos and it really does wonders for clarity and makes mixes sound much more professional.

Your channel has been the most helpful for me on my mixing journey. You manage to make what seemed like an overwhelming and complicated process and break it down to a very simple level. Thank you for your content.

Dude, I just bought your Heavy Mix Fix course the other night. It's more than worth the $27 I paid. Definitely recommend it to others. I don't even do "heavy" music, per se, but I still found it both engrossing and useful.

Hmm. I've never used a limiter on the bass, but I'll give that a look. I have a bunch of old recordings I'd love to really touch up and get to sound good, particularly with the metal guitars. We recorded direct in with no amp sim or cabinet sims (cause we were young and poor), do you have any suggestions on getting these direct in recordings to sound better? Like a cabinet sim or technique to help it out?

Bobby. My guitars sound great in my mix but I'm using the same patch and EQ settings live and I keep hearing the word THIN coming from other musicians and bandmates. So even though the guitars are mix ready for recording what can I do to put the umph back into them for live so that they"move some air" as I'm told

Man I've been using the Waves Limiter on bass too, having a growling bass in the center is wonderful, and have a D.I to push the low end works very well for me. I usually use fab filter and you can hear the frequencies you're cutting, sometimes people understand there is a lot of mud there, but it can be hard for most people to understand the concept.

Really helpful vid Bobby, I used to struggle with low end a lot but high passing and getting rid of unwanted frequencies is the way to go imo! I sometimes use some sidechain compression if I want the boom of the kick to come through but it's not needed everytime.

These tips are solid! Thank you for putting out content on such a consistent basis. Regarding high pass filters, if im applying one in my amp modeler (line 6 helix) should I not be applying a second one on the eq plug-in in my daw?

I already use a brickwall limiter on the low end of my bass, but why the heck I don't do the same on the amp track, is nothing that can be explained rationally. Thanks for sharing.
@Voidpiercer
@Voidpiercer Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bobby. Would you recommend a brickwall limiter on EZBass tracks as well, or purely on live bass?
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording Жыл бұрын
I use it on EZbass, just a little less heavily. More to just limit the peaks since the signal is already pretty consistent.

So when i read the heavy mix formula, it suggests that I hi pass the kick, but here you recommend that you dont for it to exist in the low. When do tou think is the best situation to either allow the sub, or filter it for the kick?
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording Жыл бұрын
You can hi-pass the kick or drum buss (I'm hi-passing the drum buss in this mix at 40HZ), but the end result is still the same...the kick is sitting below the bass because the bass is filtered higher up. High-passing the kick is meant to add extra headroom to the mix.

Thanks for sharing your techniques, man. An un-handled low-end will take the definition out of the mid & high-end; it makes everything sound weak.

Awesome video. Helpful as always. Yes, I have been doing all three of these things due to watching your videos, LOL. One thing though, when the instruments are heavily downtuned, do you still think it's better to put the kick below the bass knowing that the bass fundamentals are going to disappear? Just curious. And thanks for the great content!
@FrightboxRecording

How do you dial in your limiter? I have the L1 but find it sucks the energy from a lot of instruments, especially snares.
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording Жыл бұрын
The only time I use an L1 on drums is on the drum buss and very subtly. In these cases I treat it more like clipping because it will destroy your snare if you're not careful. Only a 1-2dB of gain reduction.
@theopinson3851
@theopinson3851 Жыл бұрын
@@FrightboxRecording yep, the snare was the worst. I put it on because the snare had these crazy high peaks and was clipping on output but any time I applied the limiter it just sapped the energy out. I ended up just turning down the master fader to avoid any clipping there and it sounded better. So you focus on the amount of compression when dialing it in? How much do you aim for on bass guitars?
@jeffbridges6110

Saw you pulled up the L1 on the bass DI, but how does that compare to the bass guitar track with the tone chain please? Similar?
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording Жыл бұрын
I've never used the Tone Chain. Is that a plugin? If you're referring to the track without the L1, it sounds similar just way more all over the place and less controlled.

ur taking out too much mid range. the life in everything is in the midrange. u dont needa worry about getting low end in your mix. u need to make things pop with offensive mixing and the low end will sort itself out. you also dont needa put a low pass filter on anything. theres natural air that sits if u leave it alone, and u dont needa low pass ur vocals. the body sits around 200 hz but theres no reason to pass them. theres too much deductive eq in ur mix. so yeah ur getting low end u want but ur destoying the mix in the process.
@SelfPoisonBand
@SelfPoisonBand 10 ай бұрын
As he said in the video, not every genre is the same. If you heard the bass, theres nothing wrong with the mid range at all. Or the kick. There are compressors and other elements added which enhance the mid range, and introduce high and low changes with the EQs he used. What youre teetering to works more with natural aimed mixes. But that isnt what this genre is for? As he says in other videos, he doesnt make the rules, people like what people like and this is his results. I checked out your page. My music may not be very good, but bobbies music is. Where is yours?
