This is a terrifying story. I love the fact that it was so long ago and President Roosevelt saw fit to include it in his book. The two men in the story were mountain men, expert hunters and trappers. So many similarities in what they told about and the experiences these days. interesting. Thank you, Chris. And yes please to multiple stories a week!

The Colonel himself had an odd experience in Washington state while on an excursion there. He heard a scream-growl that he couldn't identify and which, apparently, freaked out his Indian guide who insisted that Roosevelt and himself needed to be 'anywhere but where they were'.

I've been camping and fishing on Wise River many times. As a MT native, hands down my favorite part of the entire state. Almost feels like its own national park. The Pioneer Mountains on both sides of the valley are magnificent, lots of old abandoned mining history at Coolidge, the Crystal Park (dig for your own gem stones), and nearby Bannack. Also a great nearby ski-hill, and the plateau at the top of the pass genuinely resembles some parts of Yellowstone (minus the geysers). The area is a fishing and hiking mecca. Highly recommend visiting if you're near the area. Hope you're well Chris, it was indeed a very frightening story!

First of all, my hats off to you for camping out in the woods all alone. Hard pass for me. I’d never leave the camper. Second, if i’m ever found in that situation, by no means would I EVER separate myself from my partner and wander off into the woods alone after encountering something that obviously doesn’t want me there. Good story. Much appreciated.

Checking YT first thing on Sundays for your latest story, Chris. Love them all! I'm sure there are endless untold stories like this, especially from the past. I'm very curious what stories the Native American community have. When my son was driving across country with a childhood friend after his time in the Montana Conservation Corps, they went to the Grand Canyon and spent a few days with the Native Americas that lived there. They told my son and friend that there are space ships/sauces that are hiding in the canyons. They also said they had told the police several times, but they ignored them. I've heard that the Sasquatch are aliens from another galaxy. Things that make you go hmmm!😆👽

Chris we look forward to your stories and have been watching the older stuff while we wait for Sunday's post. So definitely welcome another story per week. Sad that they did not leave as soon as there was an issue, that they didn't listen to their gut and that they split up; otherwise Jessup may not have been killed. Dave Paulides always mentions the point of separation and Steve Isadahl to listen when something does not feel right. And you always scare the poo out of me with the sound effects!!! Good job!! Stay safe out there!!

I’ve read that story from Roosevelts book about a half dozen times. Nothing has discredited Roosevelt that I’m aware of and believe him to be a very credible person. I intend to buy that book but following Sasquatch studies, as well as Roosevelts outdoor experiences this is a story that sticks with me. I seriously doubt Roosevelt would fabricate for attention. Hell phones, let alone internet was zero consideration. L

Hi Chris! Great job telling this story; I especially liked it when you said something about the reputation of the area and then your comment, "They went...anyway". Right? We would not and even then a prudent person would not have. Teddy Roosevelt was quite an outdoorsman, and not everyone back then was, which is why I figured we have so many state and national parks...to protect us and then, if you get what I mean. The other fun part of your telling this story is when you get to a scary part and you nervously glance over your shoulder into the dark woods behind you and take a drink of beer. No kidding I would be too. Hope you had a fun hike and thanks for braving the weather and the snow for us for the backdrop. God bless.

The wilderness must have been terrifying back in the 1890s. I read a book about George Washington many years ago. He would go out on horseback with a friend and explore around the shennandoah valley and blue ridge mountain area. Often times they would come across native Americans. His friend was able to communicate with them but Washington made no effort….he considered them below him. The book was very interesting as it went into a few wilderness excursions that Washington went on.

I was born in Butte, Montana and grew up in Browns Gulch. The Big Hole and Wise River area was and still is impressive. So many memories and laughs camping, fishing, hunting, and exploring that area when I was young. But there was this one time in 1979 Fourth of July camping up at The Little Joe campground area and we heard something coming from high up a drainage and it was getting dark. The sounds it was making was nothing I’ve heard before and haven’t heard since. Even my entire family who was with us and and they are outdoors people couldn’t explain it.

Mankind’s use of tents is ancient…the Holy Bible mentions the use of tents in the Old Testament Genesis 4:20. Tents in North America in the 18th & 19th century required horses & sometimes wagons to carry the larger ones. Most men used canvas to fabricate simple shelters until they could build better ones.

LOVE IT! I spend a lot of time in the back country of the Big Hole drainage. Hunting, hiking, fishing and mt biking. To me it's always been a unique slice of Montana. Never had any Bigfoot encounters but there's definitely been times where I've got the feeling "Hair on the back of my neck" to move on and not loiter. One time, a friend and I were working our way up to a park above 8,000' and while in some thick timber we heard a very loud growl right near us. Both of us froze and looked at each other then looked everywhere we could see without moving to locate the source. Eventually after not seeing or hearing anything else, we decided to head back down the mountain. Still to this day it perplexes me as to what made the sound. My best guess is that it was a bobcat in the trees above us.

Hey Chris, the Salmon river (Idaho) and Wise river (Montana) originate near the far southeastern area of Idaho and the far southwestern area of Montana, respectively. My guess is the “Wisdom” river guy was in the Beaverhead Mountains. Any Idaho or Montana natives have input? Honestly, the names they used to use for the rivers are likely different than those we use today. The nomenclature we use today is different in enough ways. Either way, very good story from some true grit individuals.

I love that story, I always imagine how horrified city folks even back in that time would have decided over-crowding and sweat shops weren't so bad after all. Even for an older woman raised in rural northern Minnesota my goosebumps are up and I've both read & listened to it before! Good telling!

Great story, great President. Sounds a bit like one of those stories, though, where two men go prospecting and only one returns. A bit suspect. However if Teddy Roosevelt believed it, who am I to argue?

Hi Chris!! I was so happy that you shared this story on your channel. I actually heard this story B4 a long time ago on a Bigfoot documentary on TV. It just amazes me that Bigfoot stories go back as far as they do. I do have a question, on one of your videos, I thought you said you had an email account, is that still active? Thanks Chris!! Love the Bigfoot stories, Be Safe and God Bless!!
