Thanks for this video. Yesterday I replaced the fan wheel assembly because the old one had cracked at the center bolt. Replaced it with a new one, but the cheapest one I could find on Amazon. That apparently was a mistake as the replacement started making the noise you are showing in this video within minutes of starting the dryer on the heat cycle. your video is helping a lot of people who are dealing with this issue on both used and new fan housings.

I replaced the drum mounts and bearing and runs fine without the heat running. Any level of the heat I add it sounds like a freight train. Now to try you solution I hope it works

Yep, it will. I hope you receive the updated blower wheel and not one that has the old style plastic. I can only imagine that the old plastic used deforms as it heats up causing the rumbling freight train sound

Thanks for this. Couldn't figure out why the dryer started out quiet and then got noisy when I left. Saved me a lot of trouble shooting. Not to mention, I would have figured out the left hand thread on the blower fan after I broke it!! In fact it was so tight, I questioned if mine was opposite to yours!

I can't wait to try this. I'd initially replaced the front felt and glides, as the glides were definitely broken off (and it's a project I've tackled in the past). When that didn't help, I decided to tackle replacing the belt and the rear axle (and its receiver). That didn't work, so I took everything apart, again, blew it all out with canned air, and decided to replace the tensioner pulley assembly. That seemed to to the trick - for all of 2 loads of laundry. Then, the tell-tale rumbling started back up, always getting worse the longer the dryer runs. As I read in some of the other comments, I never thought to replace the blower, as it seems to spin freely. On the plus side, other than the motor, I've pretty much rebuilt my dryer.

2 1/2 years later & this video is still relevant. I had the exact same issue on my Electrolux dryer and found this video after already replacing the motor. Now I have essentially a new dryer, after having to replace the heater element (heater elements burned out) about 18 months ago. Kudos, PAballonists & thanks!

I'd buy you a case of beer if I could! Luckily I stumbled across this video after the rear drum bearing kit installation and the idler arm job but before I woiuld have changed the belt, glides, spring, seals and ultimately motor. I may never have changed the blower because it appeared to function perfectly. I did the dryer test like in the video, and there was no doubt. Installation was quite quick as I have become quite proficient at tearing apart and rebuilding the dryer multiple times over the last week.

This was the fix today! Tried replacing motor, support wheels, and was ready to buy a new dryer. Tried the blow dryer test. Replicated the sound. New blower fixed it all. BTW, mine was an Electrolux dryer, same parts as many Frigidaire.

I've run into the same issue. My old fan wheel became decoupled from the threaded portion in the middle and was slapping around in the housing - making a ton of noise. Obviously needed to be replaced. I ordered and installed a new one & found exactly what you've documented. Works great & nearly silently on air fluff, and at the beginning of a heated cycle. After a couple minutes of heat, it gets intolerably loud! Cool it off and it's quiet again. Thanks for posting your problem & solution!

Yes I have noticed that the new version of this fan is a different color plastic so there was a run of them out there that had this issue and you may have gotten one of those as your replacement. I can't figure what the deal is with the old fan but somehow when it gets hot it just makes a hell of a racket

thank you i had the same problem with Daewoo dryer after i saw you video i replaced the wheel blower the noise went away quiet like before this video save me $ wheel cost me $12.00 i appreciate .The only difference between the new and old wheel was the weight enough to make noise i believe

Mine actually had the opposite symptom caused by the same problem. It would get quieter as it warmed up, - though it was still pretty loud, warm or cold. Replacing the blower assembly fixed it. I had to cut the blower wheel off and split the metal collar left behind with a dremel in order to unscrew it. I'm not sure the wheel was ever contacting the housing. I wonder if it had just gotten more warped over time which caused it to be unbalanced and led to vibration.

I think you're right. There is a lot of clearance in there and it's very unlikely that the fan would hit the housing unless it was broken or severely warped.

5:27 The heat makes the plastic expand and then the center hub for the blower fan separates and makes the noise. Might have to cut off the housing to then cut off (or melt off) the blower wheel. Then you can grab the shaft up front (behind the threads) with a 2nd pair of locking pliers to get the stubborn hub off. Turn right to loosen (NOT righty tighty)

A possible explanation, of what everyone observed, is the blower wheel expands when heated, causing it to make slight contact with its housing. The replacement unit, may have a slightly smaller blower wheel, a slightly larger housing, a blower wheel that expands less, due to being comprised of a different material, or a housing that expands more when heated. This is most likely a design failure or a manufacturing failure. Possibly, the design tolerances were to tight, given the manufacturing capability. The engineers wanting to prevent blow by, didn't take into account the unit was not going to be built in jet engine facility, like Prat & Whitney or Rolls Royce. Regardless, great job on the diagnosis. I really like the use of the hair dryer.

@@PAballoonists Too late ... bought the motor, and when i tried to install it i had to destroy the blower wheel, so i ordered that and put them both in, not knowing i only needed the blower. I wish i hadn't seen this vid!! Oh well. Anybody need used Frigidaire motor? Seriously, it is good to know what the real problem is ... and how easy it is to gut one of these bad boys.

SOLVED!! Thank you thank you. I am dumbfounded how that blower makes that noise and hum sound and loud,,warping when hot? I have been searching for the fix!! Weird problem may I share this info what a crazy problem!! I have noticed GE and Amana at times do the same thing,not so much Whirlpool. Great video , one can never learn enough!!

I have this same dryer, had Home owners insurance and they came out and said it was the rear bearing. There isn't one after I took it apart and found out it was the blower motor housing doing exactly this in fact as it got hotter because the housing on mine was actually cracked and seemed warped was rubbing on the drum.

Mine will run fine for 10 minutes then start rumbling. Then stops rumbling after a minute or so. Then it might run 5-30 minutes normally again and then rumble again. Replaced heating element and all the s sensors. Not sure if this is the fix since it doesn't do it all of the time. Everything looks fine inside dryer. Any ideas? Could this be my problem?

Check the bearing on the rear of the drum in the center. It is a metal ball that lays in a plastic cradle with grease. When it is worn out it can cause this intermittent rumbling.

@@PAballoonists Thanks for the quick reply and possible fix. Mine is an Electrolux by the way. I should have put that in original comment. I just saw on another video what your talking about. Just saw it on yours also actually, lol. I don't have that on mine. Guess I'm going to give up after buying all these new parts and buy a new one. I know it's fixable but I can't figure it out. Can't find anything anywhere on what mine is doing. If I have someone come out to fix it I'm out another $200 at least probably. The rumbling gets so loud you'd think the dryer is going to blow up. Hard to explain without hearing it. Again it might only do it for a minute then it goes quiet again. Then run 20 minutes fine and then rumble again for 30 seconds to a couple minutes. So strange. If you or anyone else has any thoughts please let me know.

Run it with the fan squirrel removed and on air fluff so the heat doesn't come on. Is it still noisy?

You could have a bad rear bearing or idler bearing causing the noise also. That's why I wanted you to remove the fan and run it on air only no heat

Since there will be no air moving without a blower wheel make sure the heating element does not come on or you could damage it. If the noise goes away, the problem is your new blower wheel. If the problem remains then something else is making the noise

@@PAballoonists it only makes noise when I put the hairdryer to it... The part is under warranty so I just received a new one and the fan wheel is a differ shade of plastic... I put the newest one in but I'm waiting for new exhaust gasket to to try it out...

I have the exact same dryer, with the exact same probleme, but the top/back also gets hotter than usual, but only when the noise starts, was it also the case for you? What was the model number of the replacement part that you ordered?

The reason it would be hotter than usual could be a clogged internal duct work or fan intake in the dryer itself or the ductwork going outside of your house. That would make the fan noisy faster and the back of the dryer hotter than you saw previously. That condition would get worse over time as lint builds up. If you look up your model number on searsparts.com you will most likely see that the fan has an original part number and has been replaced with a new part number. Sears Parts is usually pretty expensive so I don't order from them I just use them to find information and part number since they have good blow up diagrams of everything. Make sure when you search around the internet that you are getting the new part number when you order your fan to make sure you get the updated version. I haven't seen a bulletin or anything like that on this change but usually when a manufacturer changes to a new part number it's because there was some problem they're not telling you about, they just supply a new part number. In my case I believe the new fan was a white plastic and the old fan was sort of a yellowish plastic. This and the fact that there was a new part number tells me they must have had some issue with the original plastic formula used that created the problem so they came up with a new part number and use the different plastic formulation to correct it. Of course this is just my theory and not based on anything I read anywhere. Hopefully that helps you out. I would say take the dryer apart and make sure all of the lint is cleaned out, and all of the lint is cleaned out of your exhaust vent and duct work, replace the fan and you should be good
