I loved this show. It's the first children's cartoon I'd seen to introduce the "corrupted hero" trope. Zack sabotaging the airship, taking secret lessons with Argost, allowing Argost to control Fisk and full on abandoning his family at one point. Seeing a hero character making such decisions, even if it's for a good reason, is really fun and I wish more cartoons did it

Also the fact that the characters could be " wiped off" was interesting! Yeah but in my opinion I just don't see The Secret Saturdays and Ben 10 being in the same universe. Bc there's so many things in both universes that would contradict eachother. Such as if the Cryptid War did happen, then why didn't Ben put on the Omnitrix for that? Also they completely butchered the character designs. They're feel like the most basic you can get instead of being stylized for their characters like their were in their show. In Omniverse, Doc lost his lightning scar above his eye. Now it's just a straight scar going through. Yeah, there was a reason it was in a lightning shape. Also, Zak's hair and Drew's is just... looks so weird in OV.

I remember watching this on Cartoon Network and my first familiarity with the series was the teaser marketing campaign that had CG versions of Fiskerton, Zon and Komodo in the real world with a Video Camera Footage. Overall it was a fun series and as you mentioned in the video the creator, Jay Stephens was inspired by the 1960's Action Hanna-Barbera shows (e.g. Johnny Quest, Space Ghost, Valley of the Dinosaurs) and his love of Cryptozoology for the creation of _The Secret Saturdays._ Even the voice cast is impressive cause you got Nicole Sullivan, Phil Morris, Will Friedle, Diedrich Bader Fred Tatasciore, Corey Burton, among many others and it's crazy that Will Friedle and Nicole Sullivan previously worked on Disney's _Kim Possible_ before this show. Lastly, just like _Ed, Edd n Eddy,_ _Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sheep in the Big City_ and _Codename: Kids Next Door,_ _The Secret Saturdays_ was not developed in-house at Cartoon Network Studios but is animated at Porchlight Entertainment instead. Thanks for making these fascinating videos Jordan and being a part of the Cartoon Community.😉👍🏼

Another great aspect about the show that didn’t get highlighted enough during its initial run was the diversity of the cast and the world. Watching this show as a kid got you exposed to just about every single major culture in the world, with the characters reflecting this in their diversity and uniqueness from one another. Mind you, this was all before diversity was even a real point of focus in television aimed at kids. It was just a choice made by the creators for no reason other then realistically portraying the vast world we live in. This doesn’t even mention the fact that the Saturday’s were a mixed family. Growing up in a mixed family in the 2000’s, it was just so freaking cool to finally see a mixed kid like myself who had parents that looked like my own, a character I could actually relate too, not just look up too. I rewatched it recently as an adult during quarantine, and I totally agree with your assessment of it - amazing show, confident in it's tone and knew the exact vibe it was going for, but season 2 was very rushed. Which is unfortunate, because I feel like the concepts they explored in season 2 were really interesting and fairly complex for a kids show. I'm glad you covered it! Would you consider doing Chop Socky Chooks (another weird show I watched as a kid that I feel wasn't super popular).

I think about this show fairly often and how it went so far under the radar. When cryptids are mentioned I immediately think about the Secret Saturdays. I’m so happy that other people actually do remember this show because anyone around me that I ask seems to have forgotten it or just never really saw it
@kinsleymcnulty79142 жыл бұрын
Legitimately one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows of all time, right up there with the first couple iterations of Ben 10 and Generator Rex. Remembered that difficulty of being able to find the episodes when they were on, but thought it was a great story with solid action. I appreciated how they teased and then revealed Zak being Kur, as well as bringing back Zak Monday to use in Argost's plan. There was never a time (up until the very end) where Argost didn't seem to have a secret unsettling upperhand when he was on screen, so any time he "lost" it always felt like it was either part of the plan or that he was clever enough to hit back smarter.

I'm way too young for Johnny Quest and a little too old for Secret Saturdays but was born right in time for Jackie Chan Adventures and The Mummy: The Animated Series. We really need an official name for the "kid accompanies his adventurer parents on missions" genre.
@Cerebrum1232 жыл бұрын
I watched all of them*. I don't think you are ever "too old" for cartoons. They were all pretty good. *I didn't watch the original Johnny Quest when it was airing. I watched reruns of it, and one of the reboots.
@Cerebrum1232 жыл бұрын
@Peters6221 That's a definitely a possibility. Perhaps I was reading that too strictly.
@chowyee50492 жыл бұрын
@Peters6221 yup, pretty much. Saturday mornings are for extra-curricular activities where I'm from. I was actully referring to the shows that were airing while I was growing up and therefore feel most attached to. Secret Saturdays came out as I was aging out of the target demographic so I still think of it as a "new" cartoon. Jackie Chan and the The Mummy were released early enough for me to think of them as having always been around. Ben 10 and Xia Lin Showdown were released while I was in the exact age demographic which is why I think of them as "my" shows.
@chowyee50492 жыл бұрын
@@Cerebrum123 btw, I follow Craig of the Creek. It's just that I'm fully aware that it isn't exactly aimed at me and is therefore not "my" show. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy it, it's just that it isn't an integral part of my childhood like the shows released while I was growing up. Think of the changes made to your old school. Sure, it may be better now but it just isn't "your" version of it. You're glad that those that came after you will be able to enjoy it but you can't claim the present version of your school as "your's". It was made for the next generation and is therefore "their's". Hope that makes sense, also that you remember your schooldays fondly 'cause my whole analogy falls apart otherwise.
@Cerebrum1232 жыл бұрын
@@chowyee5049Well, going to school was a nightmare for me so I never had an attachment to the place. I get what you are saying though. I just read you the wrong way in your first reply. I'm a bit too literal at times.

Loved this video! Been a longtime The Secret Saturdays fan and this was very well researched and showed some of my favorite aspects of the show. I cosplayed as Zak at a con sometime back and so many people got hyped and nostalgic upon recognizing. I have that Claw toy by the way, and it genuinely scares the shit out of everyone, since it does launch out. Thanks for giving this series some love!

This was one of the first shows I tried to follow as a kid, and I remember those schedule changes killing my hype for it. After 10 episodes, I lost track of it and didn't know new episodes were airing until some point where I caught something that was an episode I'd never seen before, but the continuity was enough that I struggled to get back into it. Eventually caught enough reruns and loved it, but the schedule issues definitely hurt my ability to watch it, which is a shame because I do love this show, season 1 especially.

Haven’t thought of this show in forever, but I do remember it being one of my favorites on CN. I loved how the family acted so wacky and actually fought/disagreed with each other, especially the ‘brothers’, cause it was how my family acted 😋 Doyle was my favorite character since his first appearance and I was glad whenever there were scenes he was in. Especially when they explored his dynamic with Abby and Zack’s face when he proposed to her 😂 I do remember there being a gap between the seasons and the air time wasn’t always consistent. Which sucked as that’s how a lot of CN shows ended up getting lower ratings. I wouldn’t mind a continuation of the SS as I’m sure with the right story and execution it would be a great watch.

The problem with the Ben 10 Omniverse crossover episode is that while Zak is the right age, Ben is not and I think it's because of when Ben re-created the universe, he brought the Saturday's into his just like he did with Elena in Parallel Paradox.

Yeah I'm glad I ain't the only one, cuz the changes for the characters were a bit off to me, especially when they didn't bring back the OG voice actors. Plus I wasn't really a big fan of their redesigns, especially with Drew, I much prefer her old hairstyle. Also the hot mom jokes was abit over the top.

u havent given any evidence to your points, ben is 16 turning 17 soon as mentioned by Max in ep Dimension 23 in omniverse. and for your information the ages matches up Zak (Season 1 - age 11, S2 12( after 6 months timegap) then 13), then omniverse is set 3 years after seaon2 finale.Ben OG age 10, AF age 15-16 S3, UA age 16, Ominverse he is still 16 but about to soon turn 17.

Man, I gotta say - I only checked out this show recently (missed it when it was actually airing, sadly) and I fell in love with it SO fast. The characters' personalities and dynamics are so engaging and the writers manage to pull off quite a few surprising and satisfying twists! I binged it within a matter of days. Most of season 2, I actually enjoyed, I appreciated the focus switch from the family's cryptid-finding work as a whole to Zack (and co) dealing with the Kur powers and expectations that come with them. Yes, I would have loved to see more of what took place within that 6 month time-skip, but I can understand why it was necessary and don't feel that it took away from the rest of the season too much. Argost giving Zack secret Kur lessons was by far one of the most fascinating and intriguing plotlines in the series, imo. Unfortunately, when it came to the finale, I do think it fell a bit flat thanks to the rushed pacing. Not that there was anything wrong with the story itself, but it did feel like they needed more time to tell it - the ending came so fast I hadn't even processed that it was over until the credits started rolling. It definitely leaves you thinking "wait, is that it? That's the end??" Most disappointing of all was the lackluster response to Zack losing his powers - yes, they were the cause of all the recent problems and trauma he and his family underwent, but he's had those powers literally from birth and largely seemed to enjoy them. Having him just celebrate being rid of them once and for all, without any hint of conflicted emotions, just seemed a bit...off. Sad for a show that otherwise is a masterclass in good tv writing, especially for a younger demographic. I'm still geeking out over the breadcrumb trail of hints in season 1 that pointed to Zack being Kur (yes, the "eleven years" coincidence does feel like a giveaway at first, but they do such a good job of dissuading your confidence in the theory from that point on that it doesn't much matter). Always such a bummer when a good show gets cheated out of its full potential due to the showrunner not having enough faith in its ability to perform well (looking at you, Nickelodeon, you know what you did to Rise of the TMNT). All-in-all, though, I'd definitely still rank this show pretty high on my "best animated tv series" list. And once the whiplash has worn off, I might even be due for a rewatch. Can't say I'd be too keen on it getting rebooted, as I just don't think it would be the same if it were made today (especially given Zack's va is too old to reprise the role now), but I do hope that it's at least released on streaming and can finally get the appreciation it rightly deserves.

It's a shame that CN has stopped making a action series and put more focus on family fun, which isn't all bad, I love Craig of the Creek and Steven Universe was a mix of action and family fun (for the first few seasons). Thankfully Disney has been doing well with their story based animated series, Star Vs., Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and The Owl House.
