Frist Impressions: Opinel Knives and an 80's Boy Scout Knife

In this video I will take a look at two Opinel knives, the No. 7 carbon steel and the No. 8 in stainless steel. I will compare the size of the knifes for EDC usage, the steel and wood used on these knives. I will also be showing you my late 80's early 90's Boy Scout knife. I prefer the Mercator K55K “cat knife”. The Mercator K55K is probably THE most underrated knife on the planet.

1:39 The locking collar is only available on the larger knives as far as I know. I have almost a half dozen No. 8 and none of them have the locking collar. My larger No. 10 does have the twist lock collar.

Opinels are underrated. I consider them to be the Mora of the folding knife world.

Hey Budding Survivalist! Thanks for the comment! Opinel has been around for so long and have such a rich history that I like to think they will always have a place in a knife collection. I agree though, there are so many new knife companies out there making great products and new technology is always being applied to these knifes that Opinel may not get that much attention. That said, apparently an Opinel knife is purchased every 10 seconds! Me ... I'm a sucker for old school stuff and companies with a rich history like Opinel, Zippo, Brooks England, etc. So choosing an Opinel for my EDC was a no brainer. I've never owned a Mora so I can't speak about them. Do you own an Opinel?

@@BenGeldreich Yes, I have an Opinel. It's a great knife. Like the Mora, it is a high value purchase due to the low price point.

the lock came in during the 1950s and the notch to lock them closed came in after 2000

You could get a No8 in carbon steal and switch the blade with a olive wood handle

Hey KEMIA! I've thought about that. They are reasonable cheap so wouldn't cost too much. Problem is I love the No7 and find that it fits perfectly in my hand. They currently don't make an olive wood No7 ;(

New opinel design really sucks!! Only one side for lock (old version was reversible for both sides) the small piece of steel is nonseless, you'll lose it in first cleaning. Opinel was always a classic for me, I bought lets say about 20 pcs for me, my family and friends, but this one was my last opinel I ever bought. New opinel design really sucks!

I didn’t realize that the older Opinel knives had a double sided lock. That’s pretty slick. I wonder why they changed that?
