Agreed. Its all about driving that hook point up/in

Great vid.. My tip for these is to run a toothpick through the body and screw lock. This helps keep the frog from tearing out of the screw lock. It's nothing to catch 15-20 fish on one body.

Regarding the hook up ratio, I swear it is the opposite in my area (New England). I struggled so hard with traditional hollow body frogs having a hook up ratio that had to be under 20%. When searching for solutions I came across the soft body frogs. My hook up ratio immediately increased upwards of 75%. I have never looked back since then. I have theorized several reasons why this may be, but i'd love to hear TB's logic and reasoning. Best channel on youtube!
@tacticalbassin7 жыл бұрын
Very interesting! Have you noticed that across a variety of lakes or specific lakes in your local area? Very interesting for sure
@MasterGhilieman7 жыл бұрын
I've noticed this across all of the bodies I fish in my area. Objectively speaking the fish tend to short strike the hollow bodies (even with trimmed legs) where they tend to inhale the soft bodies. There are so many variables which could be to blame for the difference. Regardless I just find it fascinating.
@mr.fatbasstard6487 жыл бұрын
MasterGhilieman I fish the California delta and several Ca. Reservoir/Lakes. The hollow frog bite varies and in the Delta it varies by season. September through June in the Delta it's cat and mouse. Occasionally they will bang that hollow-body two feet into the air and their mouths aren't even open. Lakes/reservoirs and in the Delta in July-August you've got one shot to get that hook-set before they ejection your frog after one big hit. Don't give up on the hollow-body and I'm sure you're going to find a bite pattern. I started out with hookset attempts and frogs flying like line drives everywhere lol. Now I am at 90% hook up and both hooks are buried in the upper jaw. Nothing wrong with a soft body but not quite as much fun as a hollow body when it comes to trills and big gills.
@mr.fatbasstard6487 жыл бұрын
and don't forget when they're making a full commitment bend your hooks out a little and set them to kill mode.
@MasterGhilieman7 жыл бұрын
I'll have to give them another honest effort some time. The biggest difference I noticed was the amount of time the fish will hold the bait in their mouth. I experimented with letting the bass eat the frog without setting the hook. The hollow bodies got spit so much quicker than the soft bodies. I'm sure they have their place, and I'm going to slowly work them back into my line up. Thanks for sharing your input.

Great help given in this video. I bought a couple different kinds of frogs a few months ago but haven't tried them. Now I'm a little more motivated to try them because of the information here. One question - does anyone make an air chamber that can be inserted into this type of frog, similar to rattle chambers that can be inserted into soft baits? Just a thought. Definitely going try my frogs next (toads) time I go out. Thanks again for a very informative and helpful video! Keep 'em coming!

Hey Tim, you mentioned having a rod with a softer tip when throwing these baits. Could you expound on that? Thanks, your video's are top notch.
@tommyd3jr5 жыл бұрын
Jon Gwartney the softer tip will substitute for the lack of drag, It’ll help prevent slack line which equals lost fish.. little to no drag while fishing toads due to where ur typically going to fish them, can’t have ur fish dive into whatever cover ur fishing and get tangled up = lost fish.. hope that helps bud

Great video.. but one question the double frog hook was not mentioned in the video.. whats your take on them.. what better the single owner Or the double.. and when does one shine over the other?
@ACDCRD7 жыл бұрын
Norry Cha those are great for the Stanley hollow body soft frog but they don't rig good on other frogs cause they don't have a wide enough gap
@tacticalbassin7 жыл бұрын
We lean toward the single hooks. Most of the double hooks available are thinner wire and flex slightly when you hookset. Between the two points and the flex the hook up ratio is often lower than a strong single hook.

these frogs you have here with the hooked legs I've never had any luck on, I bought them to replace some others I had that got utterly destroyed by largemouth, those just weren't the same, never caught a thing went back to the bright green with the swimbait style legs tipped in orange and slayed them again.
@tacticalbassin7 жыл бұрын
Those hooked feet are much louder and throw a lot of water. They aren't the best for every application. That's what this video is about, dialing in when you want each style. I guaruntee that there are weather conditions that pass through your area where the louder hooked feet would be a major player.

I fish these toads quite a bit. The video was spot on but I have a different view on the casting. For me the Zoom Horny Toad will fly weightless on 50 and 65lb braid. I also have no issues casting the Ribbit Toad or Bull version on a baitcaster. I agree with everything else especially that maybe a second delayed hookset. Also another option to the Damiki Air Frog is the Stanley Top Toad. It is a pretty awesome bait as well. My favorite is the Bull Ribbit but I try and weed out the dinks and hope for lunkers with big baits. One question have you guys tried the Z Man Hard Leg Frogz? Just wondered what you thought about it I haven't tried them but man all these others do get destroyed pretty quick. Mainly the area to skin hook to keep it weedless gets wallered out.

So this past weekend i was getting frustrated with just getting bit so I decided to try something. Using a 5/0 super wire ewg i tied a snail knot. In doing this it caused the bait to run upside down with the point down but i went from bites to catching every bass that hit like a man. All were hooked in the bottom but way in the back. Not one out of the ten spit the hook. The way the line goes through the eye on a snail knot i never even had to set the hook. Just give it a try and let me know what you think. Forgot to mention i used a zoom horny toad.

Dont throw frogs in the water, throw them on the bank and slowly work it to the waters edge. Huge bass will burrow into the mud at the water line and wait for frogs to jump in. Ive caught 10 pounders in 3 inches of water on the shore line where they had dug themselves a hole.

I have a question, I have a Denali kovert lite 7 foot 2 inch medium heavy. Its a worm and jig rod, but I was wondering what line I should use with that rod since it has micro guides? Aren't micro guides designed only for fluoro? I have tied a braid to fluoro leader, but anything other than a fg knot, (I think thats what its called, it is long and thin) but it still catches in the guides a little more than I am happy with, and I am accustomed to throwing longer leaders. Due to that I am kind of confused what I should use that rod for. I know it is best to throw braid for jigs for optimum sensitivity, but a lot of people do use fluoro. So, I'm not sure if I should ditch the idea of throwing jigs on it and use it for something else or just use fluoro. Sorry for the long question.

Quick question, i fish a pretty big man made quarry all year 75 per. Of the time because the water clarity never changes and its private and only 3 blocks from my home. That being said theres one pretty big corner of it thats about 1_6 feet deep that gets matted grass every year and thats when i fish these style baits, but this year no grass? I live in central ohio and we have had warm winters the last several years could that have anything to do with it? Or do you guys have any ideas on why?

Weedless buzzbait is DEAD on…that’s exactly how I see toads. I also consider them to be a finesse buzzbait (as goofy as that sounds). It’s got that gurgling that drives bass nuts but it’s more subdued and more capable in terms of where you can put it. There are times when a buzzbait is king but I’ll throw a toad 7/10 times just because it’s less extreme and more flexible.

TEAM RACKIT that's a do it all reel. I guess not suited for deep cranking or large swimbaits over 2 oz. Good for Texas rigs, weightless plastics, jigs, burning in buzzbaits and lipless cranks, frogging, etc. You can always slow down your retrieve if whatever technique you are using requires a slightly lower gear ratio.

Why such a small frog for a pond? How come the the keitech is not on the list but zoom is?
@tacticalbassin7 жыл бұрын
Often times in ponds it doesn't matter, they'll eat it all and the smaller frog is easier to eat so it results in a higher hookup ratio. The keitech is a nice bait but the baits we listed are the ones we throw on a regular basis, they're what we really use.

When should you use a buzzbait over a whopper plopper and vice versa?
@tacticalbassin7 жыл бұрын
IMO the plopper often gets bit a little better. Use the plopper where you can but if you need to skip, fish grass, through cover, etc... its time for the buzzbait.

in past videos I've notice that you guys throw swimbaits on heavy braid and a leader. why do this when you have a higher chance of breaking off due to the added connection? In addition when swimbaiting don't you want to be as natural as possible so wouldn't flouro be a better option? lastly if it's all worth it, what knot would you use? thanks
@theonetheonlyw54837 жыл бұрын
Garrett Hall normally you go braid to a flouro leader, I don't do this, I go full braid cause after fishing both ways I noticed no real difference, I do however use that strategy on my catfish pole, can't remember the knot name, just know how to tie it lol
@longridge30787 жыл бұрын
Garrett Hall I've found the FG knot to be the best braid to leader knot. Very low profile. I run 55lb braid to a 12-20lb leader or 30lb braid to a 8-10lb leader depending on lure. All my break offs have been at the bait.
@garretthall26517 жыл бұрын
Long Ridge yes I agree I have another knot that works fantastic but the fish will still see the braid if you only have a 7 or 8 foot long leader
