I just found this and I needed it bad. I've heard alot about Chatterbaits. I fished alot of smaller contests back in the 80s and 1990's. Then I simply took a couple of decades off of fishing completely, got caught up in other things, hunting, running long distance etc. Just recently I have gotten back into it, found the bug again and it bit me bad this time. The passion is strong, just bought another bass boat(2 now). Lots of things have changed drastically over time. There wasn't such thing as a Chatterbait back in the old days. This instructional type video is a God's Send for me. Thanks again and please keep up this type of video on your channel. Sonny Pruitt

Hay Matt! Absolutely wonderful instructional video and I'm truly grateful for helping me better understand how to fish various chatter baits. Really like the in-depth "why", for choosing a bait and color. Sure, I have moderate experience as a fisherman, but it's never too late to learn anything about lures and presentation. Too many professional anglers just assume we know a good bit and many times, that's just not true. Well done my friend, to you and your team and keep up the awesome work!

Hi guys, I have been watching your videos for about a year now and they are generally awesome. They are always informative, with facts and techniques that work. I am 71 years old and live in central Florida where the seasonal weather changes are usually not as drastic as the rest of the country. This situation causes me some confusion in determining what seasonal techniques to use at any given time as dictated by weather conditions and/or water temp. I have used many of your suggestions with great success in catching numbers of fish, but so far no double digit fish. I would love to see a video from you guys covering some of the aspects of central Florida bass fishing. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

You answered a lot of questions I had and gave me new things to think about when I'm fishing chatterbaits this season. I'm sure I'll watch this 2 or 3 more times. BTW , I've noticed when I'm driving past lakes, ponds in my area, the Frogs are out, I can hear them croaking starting about sunset, When do you typically start Frog fishing ? before or after the spawn ? or is water temp the key for you ?

@Donald Martin We catch drum all the time walleye trolling up on Green Bay. The first couple are exciting, but once you realize they aren't 20lb walleye, it's a drag to have to re-set all the lines on that side of the boat. Definitely a great fighting fish, a 5lb drum behind a planer board looks like a big muskie hit it, usually pulls the board under and then you have to fight that as well as a fish. The running joke is "your bobber's down" when you know a drum hit your buddy's line.

Great video again. You're flat out the best informational fishing channel on youtube! One thing I would LOVE to see from you is how you would adjust all these techniques you've talked about to fishing from shore (lake and river). What techniques just won't work from shore, what will work that won't work from a boat. Most every informative channel is from a boat, and most every channel from the shore is just a vlog.

I came back to watch this video again. Iv'e been using chatterbaits with great success, and I have to say, everything Matt has said, I agree with 100%. Started fishing in lighter gear and now I throw them on a Curado K 8.5:1 and a Dobyns 795SB. I've found this setup to be particularly necessary for smallmouth as what happens, is that the hooks rip big holes in their mouths and when you have a big fish in current, that also changes direction and charges the boat, you need something with both backbone and something fast to take up the line. I pretty much fish it the same way Matt recommends using a Hud, and that's to jack them, then reel, reel, reel.

Fat girls simply won't Chase Rockets. That fat beauty you caught on the rip bait that leaped completely out of the water a few vids back is pretty rare. They're simply to obese which has a lot to do with slowing them down. I go mod-floro on C rigs on thick sparse grassy flat spread tailing piles too. I purposely catch the grass and slightly load up the tip and a few light shakes and pop I am out without the rocket effect. I go heavy in the mud though. I just started fishing last spring. Not knowing what I was doing, I started on KZbin, but was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of different options, techniques, theories, and equipment. I went out with a white spinner bait, a jig, and a green swim bait and caught fish. Not monsters, and not always bass, but I was having fun. I have heard of people using chatterbait, and doing well, and since it was like my beloved white spinner bait, I figured it would work the same. I was wrong. I didnt know to put anything behind it. I didnt realize the technique with it. Watching your video, explaining the differences between them, how to rig them, different trailers and why, etc. I went out and bought a different chatterbait (Z-Man Project Z, green pumpkin, 1/2oz) and paired it with the 4in Cowboy creature bait. I went out to where I knew bass were, threw out my spinner and nothing seemed to care. I then threw out this chatter bait, the exact same spot, varied up the retrieve and landed the biggest bass I have ever seen in person! Thank you for making this video. It really does help us novice fishermen, who have difficulty figuring out this mess, let alone catch a fish or two.

Great tip! I been throwing chatterbait with very little luck religiously because it seems awesome. I watched your video and changed the rod to a heavy rod and did the retrieve like you said. I put the double swirl tail trailer on and 2nd cast I caught a nice 3+ pounder and I could barely detect the bite but you also mentioned that in the video so I didn't sleep on it and landed him. Ended uo with one more by the end of the day. Only went out for 3 hours but you changed the game for me. Thanks man!!

Thanks for breaking it down. As always, your experience shared is appreciated. I don't have the ability to spend the kind of time on the water that it takes to experiment with multiple techniques and tactics. Your information is like a map to the treasure chest. I've still gotta dig but I know I'm in the right spot!

That comparison with the heavy gear and light gear makes a lot of sense. Great video. I've been struggling with these baits every time I use them.
