Frog Invasion in Underground Parking Garage

Gates Wildlife Control was called out to inspect a frog invasion in an underground parking garage. The super of the building was finding 25-30 frogs in all 4 of their underground ventilation units each day.
The frogs were falling through the grates of the unit and landing at the bottom. The frogs were also being found in the parking garage and unfortunately being run over by cars.
Watch as we remove the frogs that were in the unit on the day we arrived and release them. We provided the owner with an estimate and can hopefully help them stop this problem for good!

I think would be extreme Hail, not fire. 🙂 But add plagues of flies and fleas to that list as well. And if people begin breaking out in boils, then you know it's getting serious...

I'm so glad that you guys took the time and energy to handle this big project, and even though they're not the kind of animal people usually go "aww" for, you still handled them with great care and humane practices. I only have one tip for if you guys ever have to remove frogs or any amphibian again. It can be helpful to add a bit of water to the bucket, just enough to cover the bottom so that they can rehydrate. Apparently, touching amphibians skin can cause them to dehydrate more. Again, I'm so grateful for people like you all who do this type of work. )

I saw a giant frog by the river today! I was photographing some insects on an old fallen log and the frog was behind me sitting on a different old tree trunk and I was very surprised to see him! I never saw one up so close before so I was sure to get his picture too - he just sat there. I did touch him very lightly on the nose as I had never touched an amphibian before and he felt a bit oily?? But he looked really big, bigger than my hand. I'm still amazed at I actually saw him and he sat still so I could get his photo. Most critters like running away. Like it's almost impossible to get a decent photo of those chipmunks!!

Thank you so much for rescuing the frogs. They are on the endangered species list and I can’t thank you enough. It’s been a very hot summer and I’m wondering if they are fleeing from the areas that they have been in? The others obviously are so tiny that they’re falling through the screen. Thank you so much for your compassion. All the best, Susan from Ontario Canada

Frogs are on the endangered list in Ontario ?? I grew up in England and Italy, I was constantly playing in nature, every pool/river I went to in the Summer was full of tadpoles in either country, we always had them in our tiny back pond too in London UK. I came to Toronto as a teenager 30 years ago I constantly take walks by water (Credit river, High Park ponds, Humber River, lakeshore) small streams, stagnate ponds and I have NEVER seen tadpoles in Ontario's water ways - I've always commented on how weird it is, the Only place I've seen frogs is the back exit of St Clair West subway in Toronto that has a trail and marshy area, but again I look in all the small pools and never see tadpoles

@@Sunnbuzz Hi! Thank you for your comment! Yes, I have not seen any frogs for many years. I had a few garden frogs, toads, and I was in love with them! Unfortunately, I found some of them with their little heads bitten off from feral cats. There are also huge bull frogs, and they are eating these frogs. They don’t have a chance for survival anymore unfortunately….. Polution, predictors, humans…it’s all very sad! I must visit the UK one day! I have only been in the airport going through on my way to Spain on business.Take care! Susan

Maybe there is a reason why they are fleeing the pond area. You might want to check out if there is something going on why they would flee their natural habitat and invade an unnatural habitat.
@SpookySoulGeek

I live around a marshy area and in recent years thousands of tiny frogs have been surviving and coming from the ponds and marshes into our town. When I say thousands I mean you can't take a step without killing at least ten of them. This year there weren't so many but there were still hundreds. I don't know if there are more bugs around to feed them or the predators have gone for some reason, but there are WAY too many frogs. I've been living in my town for 20 years and only in the past two have I seen something like this.

It's bugs season hence if you live in a multi-residential building with lots of perimeter lighting and units with plenty of glass panels that illuminate at night, then you'd have plenty of moths and other flying insects attracted to it. That creates an irresistible smorgasbord for other wildlife especially those residing in the marsh nearby. Frogs are especially plenty as well this time as many of those born last spring are now foraging together with the other more matured ones. Perhaps installing a fine mesh or shade cloth above those grates would be an inexpensive solution to prevent the frogs from falling through. You can purchase shade cloths of various sizes at amazon. You could as well advise the building manager to ask their tenants to draw their curtains or blinds to reduce the amount of bugs attracted at night.

A simple solution to prevent frog from getting into the grate would be to install a sheet metal curb about 6" high around the perimeter of the grate. You don't want to put a screen over the grate as it will reduce the air flow and throw the ventilation system out of balance.

Is there a pond nearby? It's unusual for that many frogs to appear in an air ventilation intake duct.
@quigonkenny
@quigonkenny Жыл бұрын
Maybe check to see if this is a native species, as that might explain their sudden appearance. Australia has had issues with plagues of cane toads, which are not native there, and were introduced intentionally to eradicate pests, but eventually grew to too great of numbers because they have no natural predators there, and any Australian predator that tries to eat them dies due to their poisonous nature. Such non-native animals often show up unintentionally due to hitching rides with the shipping of products. If that doesn't explain why they're suddenly showing up, perhaps recent local construction that changed the landscape is to blame (maybe the nearby pond was built for a new subdivision, for example), or perhaps the underground garage itself is new, and no one bothered to check before building it whether there were yearly plagues of frogs in the neighborhood that they might want to plan for.

Time to raise the air intake vent to a level they can’t jump to. Reminds me of the university in lethbridge that has a rattlesnake problem. There’s a nest on the property by a vent and the snakes occasionally slither over the vent and fall down into an office area.
