The best thing about hearing recordings like this is it gives you an understanding of what producers do in the studio. Sometimes the changes ruin songs but sometimes they bring out the very best of a raw song's potential. Very often the band fights to keep a song original because they wrote it but a good producer knows what will sell and can hear things the band can't.

You'll find that to be the case with some of these demos. This one is from the demos they did at Warner Bros in 1977 prior to making the first album. There's a demo where there's more harmonies on D.O.A. that I wish they would have used on the album version.

I look at these pictures and can't help but think about all the interviews I've read over the years about the band VH. How Michael Anthony was able to keep himself together facing all the negativity he got from each member is f'ing mind blowing. The dude must have unmeasurable will power.
@TrueFreddyK Жыл бұрын
That must've been later, because in the Roth days he sang his heart out, screaming right along with Dave (on fire), and he always got a bass solo live. He obviously had a great time on stage. Perhaps these stories are overinflated
@michaelcagney2871 Жыл бұрын
I read that Eddie had to constantly show him how to play the bass parts. He wasn't very talented early on except he was one of the best background vocalists ever.
@robertgruhlke9928 Жыл бұрын
I've read interviews where Ed proclaimed that that epic, utterly unique back up vocal was himself. Jfc.. Do not mistake me, I love the dude, but ffs.. Really?

What BLOWS MY MIND is knowing just how much music Ed recorded that’s sitting uncatalogued and in listened-to down in 5150! I think I heard Wolfie say that “it would take a team a long time time go through it”. Also did anyone else hear that Ed on a whim and pulled an old tape out and played it, had completely forgotten the music but it was used for “Finish What You Started?” Amazing
@ej9812 Жыл бұрын
There is a Treasure Trove of music in those Vaults!!! Problem is Alex and Wolf don’t care about the DieHards they think we’re idiots because we want hear more from the King.
@RyanConnell51505 ай бұрын
That last bit about Ed forgetting about the music but using it for Finish What Ya Started coupled with Ed saying in a CNN interview that "there's a lot of music waiting to be heard" in the vault instantly discredits Wolf saying Eddie released everything worth releasing. When in actuality Ed couldn't know that for sure without going back and listening to it all.

Same here , I remember my mom would never let me and my brother listen to any hard rock , she always thought it was devil music lol , when the first Van Halen album came out , a friend of ours in the apartments we lived in who also loved guitar fueled rock , brought over Van Halen’s first album when our mom was working , and we all just sat there blown away by the music , ie guitar sound was thunderous , and then we heard eruption !? Holy cow we couldn’t even think of how he was making his guitar sound like this , we all thought it was organs and synthesizers we were just blown away by the whole album , that was it we all had to learn how to play electric guitar And all of us soaked it up … Unbelievable talent from the whole band blew away Ozzys band The Mighty Van Halen ❤️👍🏼🎸❤️👍🏼🎸👍🏼❤️

Our favorite song to crank was the beginning of Mean Street…. That intro and when the band came in you could hear it from the parking lot to the principals office…. We would keep it going for 30 seconds or so and shut it down…. Man that was the best!!

Probably my favorite Roth era song. So glad this wasn’t the final version. I mean its great, but I’m finding a big lack of energy. Harmonies are amazing tho! Ed’s solo was surprisingly cool but still not as as good as the LP version.
@DaveRucci Жыл бұрын
It’s also amazing how horrible I think it sounds at the end of the chorus when the vocals immediately go into the word Rhyme, instead of the pause that’s in the Final Cut. It makes it a much softer delivery of the word, which I think was really necessary, instead of just blurting out RHYME!!!! Which to me sounds ridiculous everytime. Lol

@powrplaya3266 The source of Ed's unfounded disdain for Mike - he often got all the credit for backing vocals. Many forget or did not know that Alex had to insist Ed stop singing lead. Ed thought he was doing just fine. Anyone who has listened to "How Many Say I" knows Ed is not a good vocalist. But I believe there was something special in the blending of Ed and Mike's voices/harmonies. One of the saddest parts of the VH saga.
