One thing I like about Sony is you have more options if you consider third party lenses. Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8, Sigma 28-105 f2.8, and Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 are pretty solid options, each of them being half the price as the Sony/Canon lenses. For most people, One of those alternatives could be a better buy.

The difference between 24 and 28 are huge IMO. It’s not just f2 vs. f2.8…there is a reason why the industry moved away from what was the pro standard of 28-70 to 24-70…so I think that comparing the 24-70 f2.8 to the 28-70 f2 is misleading. These are different use models because 4mm on the bottom end really matters.

Sony fans, welcome to the party! You guys will love it. f2 is simply amazing for this lens. A full stop of light cannot be overstated. I've used the Canon one for years now, and it was a true unicorn. But now I guess there are 2 unicorns. It's hard to use a 24-70 f2.8 after using a 28-70 f2.

@@ElementaryWatson-123 wdym? The raw files for this new lens is uncorrected so we can determine the correction needed by manually correcting it. My bad, the Canon 2870 F2 did have slight vignetting on corner when you shoot wide open at the wider focal range. Every focal length have different performance though. In the end, does it even matter? No clients will be complaining about what lens you use if the end result is good. I don't get why people are obsessed with spec tbh

My Canon 28-70 f2 is my fave lens, so never looked back. Prior to that it was my EF 24-70L ii that took 90% of my pro shots. After I got the 28-70L, I still planned on picking up the RF 24-70L but it never happened. On the rare occasions that I need 24, I go the my wide zoom. I do find the 28-70L on my R5 on a heavy gimbal just too damn heavy for any long take video work, and don't seem to be able to invest in my guns, but rarely try to zoom on a gimbal, so use a fixed 24mm.

@@ivancondeph regarding Canon's 50/1.2L beware that there are some audible cracks during focusing, so an external sound recorder/directed mic would be needed. This also adds extra 200grams to the setup. Having that said, in my opinion the switch is totally worth it. I shoot both photo and video, and now the process looks significantly less time consuming - since the image not only looks better - it requires lot less time in post. You'll be surprised - even JPGs are usable now lol. With the Sony only RAWs were usable, but since they required a ton of processing - the results were less consistent. Now I can even export JPGs to my iPhone directly(yes Canon made a usable app!) and edit in auto mode, so my wife doesn't bother me for weeks to edit some photos :D And in RAWs colors do not fell apart after heavy corrections. Somehow Canon renders A LOT better in the mixed light situations. So I keep blaming myself for ever spending money(A LOT) on Sony gear.

Maybe a dumb question but how can the Sony and Canon equivalent be the same if the latter has both a larger diameter at the lens and the camera. Doesn't that mean it lets in more light and hence allows for either lower shutter speed or ISO? Or am I missing something? Appreciate this comes at the cost of weight, but that's irrelevant for the question posed.
@adamadamis
@adamadamis Ай бұрын
They both get the light to the same size sensor, so in essence the diameter needs to be matching the sensor. If it is unnecessarily bigger, there's no benefit.
@JK-of4dr
@JK-of4dr 29 күн бұрын
Thanks but your reply makes no sense. Both cameras have the same sensor size but Canon has a larger diameter at the camera and also at the lens in question. This must mean that the Canon captures more light....
@adamadamis
@adamadamis 29 күн бұрын
@JK-of4dr No, it doesn't capture more light. The aperture blades inside the lens regulate how much light goes through. The mount at the rear can be as big as you want, but it won't improve it. A good way to visualise this is using water as an analogy. You have a certain size of glass that can hold a specific amount of water (that'sthe aperture F number). If you pour that into a bucket, you'll still have the same amount of water. The thing is, you don't need a bucket at the other end.
@JK-of4dr
@JK-of4dr 29 күн бұрын
@@adamadamis understood That's now a different question but what is then the benefit for Canon's larger diameter?
@adamadamis
@adamadamis 29 күн бұрын
@JK-of4dr I can't think of any benefit. If you have a larger mount, then you can place the sensor further back inside the camera body. That was important with DSLRs, as you had the mirror assembly in front of the sensor. But with mirrorless, you don't need that, the sensor can be close to the mount. Nikon's film and DSLR mount was a bit restricted back then; they didn't get it right. They now have a supersized mount for their mirrorless. It doesn't hurt, but will limit how small the cameras can get.

I would like to know, why are they ditching 24mm to 28mm, i mean they would have made a 24-70 f 2 then what is the reason that everyone is ditching 24mm. please someone explain
@adamadamis

If the lens had started at 24mm, it would've been significantly bigger. And also more difficult to design, and more expensive. Less people would be adding it to their bag.

Canon may or may not go to a 24-70 f/2, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they came out with a lighter and smaller 28-70 f/2. The latter is easier to do than the former.

24-70 f2.8 vs this lens difference?
@keeblakeebla
@keeblakeebla 27 күн бұрын
All systems are great. All shoot raw. The biggest things to look at besides your ability to facilitate a good exposure is how is this cameras AF, how well can you customize its buttons to allow you to make changes quickly and very importantly how light and inexpensive is your gear? I run around 120k images per camera a year for work. I still shoot on a7iii and a7iv w good glass of which is sigma and i know my gear. Rarely do i run into issues other than my a7iii which just crossed a 600k shutter threshold. People we live in the easiest era of gear. Youre not hurting yourself unless you have a canon 20d or any flagship aps-c cameras from 20 years ago

Hi Jared, fully understand your decision to stay with Canon. But I’m really enjoying to stay with Sony. Very often I take my pictures in the nature, taking sports portraits in the European alps. For those activities size and weight really maters. Therefore I really appreciate Sony’s latest introductions. But Canon of course is nice as well 🤩.

Most of Canons new glass is bigger and heavier than Sonys. Which is part of the reason im not shooting Canon anymore. I would never buy that Canon 28/70 f2 because of its size and weight. Or their 85 and 50 f1.2 lenses for the same reason. Size and weight does matter. She said.

IMO Sony could have had a home run with a 24-70 f2. Doing a 28-70 f2 instead is a relatively weaker positioning play because it’s clear that Sony’s implied message to the consumer base for some time has been that whatever Canon can do, we can do better. IMO unless Canon has a second gen 28-70 f2 ready for release within a year, the move is to let Sony have this one and focus instead taking the flagship game to Sony. The A1 II is very much an incremental update (likely leaving room for a global shutter gen 3), the R1 very much a R3II. A variant of the R1 that would supersede the A1 II and hold its own compared to a Z9 II would be a good move to stabilise the brand by putting a stake in the ground. Then next look into a LF camera for the C series because IMO a Sony MF/LF line is an eventual thing. Fuji IMO has gone for some first mover lead by teasing the GFX Eterna despite the slow sensor readout. IMO it doesn’t seem likely that can be dramatically improved, otherwise they would have advertised so because that’s the first question and doubt everyone has. Then let the LF C series trickle down to a MF mirrorless model. Combine the LF/MF line with the stereo lens R&D to really cement a strong hold on the market for producing stills/video for VR headsets

One should absolutely switch from Canon to Sony if you’re using this lens because this lens’s job is to reduce weight of carrying multiple primes. With 550 gms less, this allows for more efficiency and productivity! 😊

Why would anyone switch camps every time one of the big three releases a good lense or body? That'd be insane 😅 The differences are so minor these days anyways. I sold all my EF glass and switched to RF when the R6mII came out because it offered a hell of a lot of improvements over my old gear. However, I stayed with Canon because I'm used to the menus and button layout, I really wanted the 100-500, and most important of all to me, I always love how the pictures look out of camera with a Canon body. If THAT changed at some point, it'd be time for me to look elsewhere for new gear, but not a day sooner.

I love that Canon is innovating and forcing other manufacturers to compete with lenses like the 28-70. I hope tons of Sony shooters pick this lens up and experience how awesome it is and shoot incredible images with it, having owned the canon for 3 years now it’s basically become my workhorse over 24-70 and was a big reason why I went with canon when I switched systems from Nikon DSLRs.
