I love what Sony and Sigma is doing with compact primes for E-mount. E-mount has a great support by Zeiss and Voightlander. Also, unless I'm terribly mistaken, you can adapt lots of non-Sony/Minolta DSLR glass on E-mount, including Canon glass. That being said, Canon has some great compact zoom lenses for R. A1 is better but not by much despite all the tech ... and at that price R5 is amazing. So, I'm getting Pentax.

We just couldn't run the risk of a camera overheating during a full Catholic ceremony. Interestingly as far as cost goes (this is what we did)..... the A1 with the Sigma 28-70 f2.8, and Tamron 70-180 f2.8 totals $8,596. The R5 with their 24-70 f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 totals $8,897. Nikon portrait shooter here for over a decade, using a D800 professionally for the last 7 years or so. I really wanted to stick with Nikon, but just couldn't wait on them any longer to catch up with the competition. I considered the A1, but the thing that pushed me to choose the R5 instead (camera arrives today!) was the glass. I also bought the 85 1.2, and even though that's some seriously expensive glass it was the same cost as if I had just purchased the A1 without a lens. Given how close they match up, it's hard to justify switching to the A1. I'm also considering the 28-70 f2, which if I buy it will make it about the same cost as buying the A1 and one high end lens. Even if I don't end up buying it, it's really cool that Canon is innovating with something like this lens.

Nikon shooter since the D200, I now use a D810 (studio, fashion, portraiture, nude). I am sad that Nikon is not anymore in the running for the AF capabilities. I have some Nikon hardware and lenses and I am still waiting for a new up to date Nikon mirrorless body. I love the Nikon cameras, color science, lenses and the look and feel. Sony has made great efforts to become the head of mirrorless world. But I think I would never go to Sony. Sony 's hardware is changing too fast, becomes obsolete very often. It must be much more difficult to sell old Sony cameras that Nikon ones. Switching to Canon is neither an option.I hope Nikon will release soon a good mirrorless body (as good as Sony for the AF reactivity) at a decent price. There's nothing Sony is offering that would dissuade me from my decision at this point. The eye autofocus is unreal good as is the focus system in general. I don't even miss shots at all which is astounding to me. Exposures are dead on and if the few aren't are easily adjusted with a NO NOISE penalty. The ergo's are still better with Canon as well.

It is SO nice to see two stable camera companies competing this closely in the new world of mirrorless systems. Even with the used camera equipment market, it's tough for ordinary consumers to have to go through a change of vendor or even to a different model line in the same company. Like many others, I spend a lot more money on lenses than camera bodies and I keep the lenses longer. Clearly the new mount gives Canon an advantage, as well as its long history of producing top-quality lenses in quantity. Still, it is heartening to see that some of Sony's newest glass is getting rated near the top in quality. That's reassuring for the future. I personally think that the mirrorless technological revolution is only part-way over. Both Sony and Canon seem to agree with that. It was a huge relief to see Sony coming out with a big improvement on its revolutionary but now aging A9 stacked sensor. There is a clear issue of cost for stacked-sensor technology. Putting a new version into a flagship camera while you drive the cost curve down makes a lot of sense.

Now it has 65 native sony, 100?+ 3th party + all old canon glass. I do agree that some older GM lenses need to be replaced but thats just shows you how far for example their new drive system has become they all need the ones from the 135GM or 400GM. Sony now has one of if not the best lens line up since for all the 'gaps' canon still has and has to fall back to adapting lenses the same lenses will work fine on the sony A1 as well.... But to each his own i guess. My point was why exclude the fact that canon can adapt its old lenses while sony can do the same and many switchers over the years have as a way to move slowly from canon to sony.

Exellent comparison video ! ! What a tough choice. I'm in that position where I need to choose which platform to jump onto. The Sony pluses are; The Sony lens, even the GM lens, are cheaper than the Canon R lens so that by the time you add up an equipment list the price point between the Sony system vs Canon becomes a lot narrower. Also Sony makes a 200-600 G lens that makes a lot of sense when you want to move up from the 70-200. Also Sony's 400 flash sync is a fantastic feature too as well as the longer non-limited video recording time. 50 mega pixels vs Canon's 45, and I believe you can switch between shooting full-frame and APS-C which can make your lens more versatile. Having the SAME card slots makes perfect sense. On Canon R5 side: The Canon body is cheaper. Also It seems the Canon R glass is 2nd to none and is better than Sony's GM glass. Their 85mm f/1.2 and 28-70mm f/2.0 look killer. The rotating rear screen could be a nice thing to have on occasion. What to do, what to do ? ?

I noticed this too. Sure, you need the super-fancy grip to get the ethernet port to equal the Sony's networking features, but most of us would get a regular grip that is significantly cheaper option.
@RiceCubeTech3 жыл бұрын
@@definedphotography but that’s a good point though. If you want the r5 to do everything the Sony can that’s beyond image quality, when it comes to cloud sync and all that you can’t without making the two cameras much closer in price. In reality if you don’t need 8k specifically or the networking features you wouldn’t be buying the a1. You’d be buying the a7riv or a7riii. And both of those are much closer in price to the r5.

@Ramage70703 жыл бұрын
Another nice comparison. Sony did an awesome job with the A1 and Canon should be really proud of how far they have come with the R5. I shoot the R5 and the R6 and my biggest beef with the R5 is the dual card types (should be the same) and not being able to record video to both cards for redundancy. I am sure I would enjoy the Sony if I owned it but I do not see anything I am missing by shooting the R5/R6. @Jared Polin looking forward to seeing the shots from Citizens Bank Park

I have several Nikon Z lenses and hope Nikon comes out with an R5 competitor. I don't need the large size of the proposed Z9, but hope a future "Z8" will fix my Z7's poor low-light focusing ability and improve its face/animal tracking. If Nikon can come through with that, I won't feel the need to go to Canon or Sony as I love the results I get from my Nikons. I just want some basic tech enhancements that we should all expect in 2021.

I think everyone will just say the r5 is cheaper .-. Jared, remember when you didnt include the a7c in budget full frame cameras comparison because of the price difference? Well, same goes here, in fact, comparing to the current 1dx would fit better! Because it is an actual flagship camera like the A1...

Why does it feel I'm the only one with nonstop issues with the Sony? Hold down the shutter, it does nothing until play is over at times, macro broke first month, the IV files all of a sudden won't read in PS or Capture One when they did before without issue. Dusting off the Nikon this weekend.

@@cooloox It's 5 series camera i.e. not pro grade. I've used them all since the 5DII. Canon's flagships have always been the 1 series so expect an R1 to take on the A1 when/if it arrives. The 60% price is factual and reflects where the R5 will sit in the Canon line up.

You honestly need to find a way to save up for the R6. I considered the 90D. I decided in the end, it wasn't about money, it was about a fantastic mirrorless camera with incredible animal eye detection, vs a good DSLR, the 90D. I am so happy that I spent the extra money. Now. I'll never say I compromised. I'm adding wildlife photography to my hobby. And in this area, the R6 is incredible, the 90D is just ok. So save up, you will not be disappointed with the R6. It's not a compromise camera like the 90D.

First, thank you for the video. Second when you were comparing prices you seem to have said with the grip the cost difference reduces from $2600 to $1700., why? The grips for each camera are about the same. If your assuming adding the higher priced Canon grip with ethernet you still would then add the grip to the Sony as well would you not to keep the battery life the same?
@yogi-niphotos11063 жыл бұрын

It's safe to say both Canon and Sony are in positions where there would be NO compelling reason to switch ecosystems if you're already in one. And since neither model is going to be someones introductory camera...well...
@RiceCubeTech3 жыл бұрын
That’s my thing. If you’re already invested in a few grand to either system, it makes no logical sense to switch. Just don’t get all the flip flopping. If you had an original R or an original a7iii and have the native glass, both have compelling upgrades on the mid, high, and pro end. EOS r has r5, r6, c70 Sony has riii/riv, a7siii, a9ii, a1 and hopefully a7iv soon.
