NEW FroPack 1 Lightroom Presets froknowsphoto.... (40% off)
This is an OFFICIAL Hands On Preview of the brand new Canon EOS 90D and Canon EOS M6 Mark II. One is a DSLR and the other is a mirrorless camera. The truth of the matter, both of these cameras share the same exact sensoer. If it were up to me, Canon would have combined the two and made a mirrorless only version.

I just preordered the ... 90D! Why not the mirrorless? Simple: My hands hate small cameras. And I want the joystick. Also I find it kind of stupid to have a viewfinder that occupies the flash shoe, because I might want to use it for a microphone, or ... a flash.

For bird photography, it has been reported that the m6 ii has better tracking abilities. It can also handle teleconverters better than a dslr. If you shoot the 90d in liveview than it shares these two advantages. The m6 ii also has the ability to shoot 14 fps or 30 fps with a 1.3x crop. The main negative for me is that you can't shoot with an EVF and a big flash at the same time unless you try to use a flash that is activiated by the built in flash as shown in this forum thread www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63203405

Hi Jared, great preview, as usual. Just 2 points: (1) you seem to be unaware of something all the other reviewers have mentioned so far. The 90D actually has FACE detection while using the optical viewfinder! I'm not making a joke by the way. (2) you mentioned that with a DSLR you waste time shooting, reviewing the image, adjusting exposure and shooting again, etc. I've been shooting for 33yrs and get a correct exposure first shot almost every time and don't even need to see the image. You give so much to us that I'm going to give something back for a change. I'm going to write an article and send it to you on exposing with a DSLR and I'm happy for you to share it with anyone. Thanks for the great work you do to help others.

@vicroberts2628

@@MikeSantis seems these days that's the type of camera people want. The 90d actually has alot of features people don't know about, or they are so set on point and shoot with minimal adjustments. I'm still learning what the 90d can do. And there is a setting where you can manually pan through all your focus points both vertically and horizontally, you can set it to continuous so it jumps to the opposite point when panning through, which Jared claims you can't. Another is that you can auto save focus settings between vertical and horizontal shooting, so when you adjust between the two it will automatically reset to the focus setting you last shot. People need to understand it's not the camera it's how much time and effort you put into learning what the camera can do. I think this preview was bias in the sense that Jared admitted he has a stronger passion for the mirrorless version.

Helpful review and well done comparison. Thanks, Jared. (1) I do not understand why Canon hasn't made the EVF available for the 90D. This would have been a great option to combine strengths of SLR and mirrorless into one camera without a lot modification: Maybe it is down to route the display data to the hot shoe and modify the hotshoe to (a) recognize the EVF and (b) switch to data comm mode for the EVF instead of the flash. (2) I am with you that investing in EF-M glass isn't the best idea but I see one exception: The EF-M 32 which converts each EOS M camera into a flexible (good focal length, good close focus capability, very good max aperture, moderately small volume/weight) imaging system with incredible IQ.

I'm a full frame Sony shooter, but I just bought the m6mk2 as an EDC and travel camera. While the lack of an EVF is a little annoying, I am finding it to be a fun camera to shoot with. I know it doesn't have much native glass, but I don't think that's a problem for me here. I have the 22mm EF-M and I plan to get the Sigma 56mm. For it's intended use, that should be fine.

@Andrew Peck I went Sony not long ago and still own exclusively Canon glass (aside from vintage and medium format). The experience has been really awesome with the mc-11 adapter, tbh. Only lens out of 9 that hasn't been great is a Canon 100mm macro 2.8 L though I kinda expected that. Having come from the MEATY 5D iii, I must also admit Sony isn't as rugged (a purely protective piece of glass broke in the viewfinder just yesterday... SAD! I'll probably just be ghetto and replace it with my own piece of glass so I don't have to spend $300 for a professional repair for a non-critical piece)though should be just fine, compared to a 70D.

@@331LX Andrew Peck I have an A7iii. Got it used but with 4k shutter and no real sign of wear for $1500. 10 fps for motor sports, if you care (though I only use the 5fps mode because 10 is needles for my workload). For real estate (Sony), I'd highly recommend the loawa 12mm 2.8 with their tilt adapter or the voightlander 12mm if size is really important to you. If you need AF, there's the new Tamron 17-28 2.8, pricier Sony lenses, and a bunch of decent primes. If you're making good money, I think it's worth the upgrade in lenses (you'll notice the lens massively). As for dynamic range, so long as you're shooting near base ISOs, you shouldn't notice a massive difference unless you really push RAWs beyond the normal. The differences start to appear around 800 and become obvious 3200+. For weddings, I feel comfortable up to about 12k though you could probably manage a usable 30k if actually needed. With the MC-11, I'm not familiar with your lens but be mindful of when the review was posted as firmware updates (from both Sony and sigma) have made massive improvements- or so I've heard.

I don't get Canon's strategy, if you are someone just starting out, you don't want to buy either of them, with the M you want to buy the adapter to use EF glass, but the EF glass is old out dated glass, and if you buy the 90 it is the same. but maybe theres some good prices on used glass, I really don't get what Canon is doing hear. the M has been out a long time and there is no glass worth talking about, and like you said the entire system could go away, and Canon now has a full frame mirrorless with a new mount and new glass, but it's a big mount, witch makes you wonder if it will ever be put on a small camera like the M. so is Canon going to stay with the M and have two lens lineups, so there apsc cameras don't share glass with there full frame cameras. I guess we will have to see, but personally I would rather have one of the new Sony apsc Cameras than either of these Canon's, they have IBIS, a view finder and lots of available glass, and lots of glass that can be shared with there full frame cameras. but I guess if you already own a bunch of Canon glass then maybe the Canon makes sense
@touringband

photographerjonathan EF is old outdated glass? The 400 f4 III is outdated? Lolol. It’s simple. Canon is moving to the R mount but they simply don’t have the R range of cameras ready yet (Pro, Sports, crop etc...). They need to still use DSLR and m mount to fill the gaps. So the strategy is all about buying time until they can finally release the R mount cameras. It sucks to wait, but they started so damn late.

I have just bought the 80d. I Dont get why so many people hate on canon and opt for Sony mirrorless cameras. You can take great pictures and the camera costs half if not more than half the price. I bet most people who make comments are not even a pro photographer. People always get too caught up in the hype like i-phones. The questions you need to ask yourself when buying a camera is does it do the job I need it to do and is it worth it for the money and most importantly does it take good pictures. I get having the latest and greatest is nice to have if money is no object to you. Am i disappointed the 90d has come out after i purchased an 80d! absolutely not. Why did i chose it over a Sony? because it felt better for me with how it was in the hand, more lenses and great autofocus. Dont become fan boys because the pros tell you what the best out there is because even older cameras still have their value and do more than enough for the average user. All these cameras are generally more than enough and equally as good depending on what you use it for. The amount of people who ive seen buy the so called best cameras out there yet still cant take an image is astounding.
