I'm about to go through my 5th camera in little over 20 years, last 2 being DSLRs. Now I like to move up to a full frame mirrorless camera. The information in this video was fantastic but just saw it now in Jan of 2023. I'm sure things on both DSLRs and mirrorless have changed. If money wasn't a factor I have one or each with a selection of lenses. I reality even my tried and true lenses are pretty much shot. In the past I volunteered my skills to shoot live on scene at fires with my local fire departments, sometimes including inside buildings while involved with hose crews with me. Mirrorless sure wouldn't be my choice then. Now I no longer do that but insists on having a rugged and reliable camera to shoot in all weather and light conditions. Now I don't know what I will eventually buy. Well thanks for the video. It was still very informative

Very well done JP. I saw an immediate advantage when the industry changed from film to digital because now I was in charge of post-production instead of the lab and I could see that I had a correct exposure immediately after releasing the shutter, but so far I see no advantage for me in mirrorless. Just another way to create a digital image that requires a complete gear overhaul and 1000's of $$$ which I'm sure the camera companies love!

Great video summary! I don't agree about the shutter covering the sensor when the camera is off though. The shutter is far more fragile and susceptible to damage than the sensor is. Don't forget that the sensor has 3 layers of filters on and often a glass layer too. The sensor is robust, the shutter will explode if a fly farts in it's general direction.
@nordic54906 жыл бұрын
Edward, when did this happen ? Plenty of people have 800k shutter counts on their DSLRS.
@holgersp6 жыл бұрын
It takes nothing to get a A7III sensor full of tiny dust particles. Doesn't matter how carefully I switch lenses. I never had this trouble with my DSLR canon and I find it a big pain in the ass.
@edwardnoble98976 жыл бұрын
Jared mentions that the shutter protects the sensor from dropping things inside. If you do this to the shutter blades they will almost certainly break. The sensor is scratch resistant and covered in layers of filters and thus is much more robust. I had worse dust on my DSLR. The Sony is super easy to clean. 99% of the time it's perfect with a rocket blower.
@cooloox6 жыл бұрын
Edward Noble The shutter closes to keep out dust, not to protect the sensor from damage. If you go poking things inside your camera you'll damage your sensor regardless. It's a great idea to keep the dust off the sensor while changing lenses.
@cooloox6 жыл бұрын
Edward Noble I think you made that up! I've had SLRs and DSLRs for over 30 yrs. I've never had dust on a sensor (or on my film). I've had dust on my mirror a couple of times and that dust would have been on the sensor had there not been a mirror. Being a charged component the sensor can actually attract dust.

l still use DSLR's because of the availability of inexpensive lenses available. Especially with Nikon F and Canon EOS. You can find just about any kind of lens at any price point for those.

I shoot Canon and just bought a new mirrorless EOS M50. I also bought a $40 third-party adapter that will let me use all my Canon glass. The nice thing is that it works with both EF and EF-S lenses (I have both). Someday I'll save up my loose change and get a full-frame camera, but for now... this is going to allow me to do everything I want to do as a "pro-sumer" for less than $700. The equivalent Canon DSLR at that price point would be the T7i... and personally, I think the m50 offers much more value and will be perfect for travel. Time will tell.
@mishm2995 жыл бұрын

swistedfilms The lens investment argument holds no ground anymore now that basically every brand has their own mirrorless system that can use their "previous" DSLR lenses with adapter without compromise (except for Canon EOS R that has shitty continuous focus lol). Not saying you're wrong in your personal preference to use DSLR, just that the lens investment is basically a non-issue now.
@swistedfilms6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that occurred to me too. However, what's going to happen is that a lot of people are going to be selling some great used equipment over the next couple of years, equipment that will let me get my job done just fine, and I'll be picking it up for a song. By the time I've worn out the last of that equipment the mirrorless world should be sorted out to a greater extent and I'll be able to switch then. And then I'll have "vintage" equipment and will be able to sell it to collectors in 2030. No joke, I just picked up a (very lightly) used 5D Mark III yesterday, and it's an amazing camera! Sure it's only 22MP, but even the 1DX Mark II is only 20. If my luck holds out this way I'll be good for a while.
@stuartschaffner97446 жыл бұрын
In defense of Jared using the A9 in so many examples: The A9 is quite expensive, but it is clearly where the mirrorless world is going. Wait a year or two and a mid price mirrorless will have those features. I’ll admit that I have an A9. I had in an order for an AIII but kept having delivery schedule delays. After weeks of seeing that the A9 was available for next-day shipping, I broke down. My shame vanished after a week of using it.

It's funny the size issue thing. Before SLR's became DSLR's they were tiny. They only became bigger to fit in the digital technology. Now mirrorless are heading back to the size of SLR's and people say they are to small. I wonder if everyone complained about DSLR's being to big when they first came out.
@gs78286 жыл бұрын
They can be lighter and occupy less space, but they have to feel consistent and have a certain presence and shape, imo. It's a spiritual thing, a feeling: it can't be an insignificant squared box with plasticky buttons on it.
@cooloox6 жыл бұрын
Eclectic Jon 101 SLRs actually became bigger and more ergonomic in the late 80s. They started having bigger grips and more electronic controls. Size being an advantage is about ergonomics and handling. There's nothing comfortable or enjoyable about holding a small camera with an inadequate grip and a finger floating in the air. The best size is the one that fits your hand and so will vary from one person to the next. I loved it when Canon's EOS cameras came out in the 80s as they felt so much better in the hand than the older flatter bodies with almost no grips on some other brands. My first SLR camera was a Zenit.
@ceddo25116 жыл бұрын
This is something that bugs me as well, loved my Nikon FE2, my first serious camera back in 1985, so compact, simple clear dials, tough body with small (albeit heavy) lenses. When digital happened DSLRS became behemoths in size and cost, they weren't for me. Got back into photography big time with the Sony NEX5n and followed by the Sony A7 mk1, a camera that I think is the closest spiritual successor to my old Nikon and on which I still use all my old AIS nikkor glass. Basically small and compact is still where it's at for me.
@paullanoue52286 жыл бұрын
Eclectic Jon 101 There is a reason for that. Professional dlsrs had far more controls on the body than a film camera. They had to be large. Pros weren’t going to stop and go into the menu to change everything. Those controls are still needed on a mirrorless. The controls all jammed together on a tiny body are a problem for a lot of men. Very small bodies are great for petit women with small hands. That’s why that make different types of cameras. This isn’t one size fits all.
@krane155 жыл бұрын
Too big, and too heavy. Thing is, there's only so small you can get before it becomes impractical. You end up holding the lens, rather than the camera.

New full frame mirrorless need to feel like DSLRs in the hands, for they will need large lenses anyway: it's not like you're gonna casually carry them in your daily handbag. That is my main criticism. Regarding the mechanical sound: I'm sure I can live without it. That's just an iconic sound. I'm sure enthusiasm will fill the void left by it, just like it did with all those sounds you could hear as part of a film camera's experience. I've no experience with EVF, so I can't comment on that.

Exposing eyes to LED light has recently been linked to Glaucoma, so maybe putting your eye up to an EVF could be harmful.

10:20: Note that EVFs are usually much larger than OVFs especially on crop bodies. And for low light some EVFs are actually better than OVFs.
@stuartschaffner97446 жыл бұрын
Lofote, many would agree that EVFs are superior in low light. They are much better for long exposures to generate motion blur, such as with a waterfall. My Sonys work fine with a 10-stop ND filter. Every Sony owner should find out what the “Setting Effect” menu item does.

Hey duke, things changed to the other end this year. Since the beginning of 2020, I heard a lot of people began mocking mirrorless camera!!
@Donewithmylifex5 жыл бұрын
I road tested a Sony A9 last early last year and I honestly thought 20fps was pure over kill, and if you needed to burst at that rate I think you need to think about taking up video rather than taking photos.. The camera was way to small for my hands and I found I was constantly hitting buttons I didn't want to. Image quality is amazing as you would expect with a camera you're paying up and over 6k for a body. But to compact for me, and very unbalanced when using a sports lens. Eg...200-400mm2.8 I'll have a Nikon D5 please and thankyou if anyone just happens to be giving one away. Haha

@Lofote6 жыл бұрын
02:47 Size has Nothing to do with robustness. it is actually harder for an DSLR to be robust as you Need to make sure that ther alignment of the Mirror - a moving part - does not get disadjuststed for a single bit, because then the AF (and even MF) would completely be unusable.

Why I still wouldn’t buy a mirrorless camera (YET). The technology will continue to grow and improve every year on out. So let’s say you bought a Sony a7lll, it works great and shoots amazing images, then tomorrow they will release something much better and enhanced, and suddenly your Sony camera from 2 years ago is totally obsolete.
@j.r.58035 жыл бұрын
Not totally. Also lets say that mirroless cams one near day gets way better than a dslr. Its better get the mirroless evwb if in 2 years a way better camera comes out since the dslr will be worst than the outdated miroless you bought. Its kinda like smartphones you dont need to buy a new one yearly you can wait a few comeouts before replacing yours. This eletric cars will be the same thing in the future aswell. Also the techology year by year will improve faster due to more information sharing worldwide that could be better but its still inba good ritm.

oh my god, please someone help me decide.... I just love the grip, the hold and the look of the DSLR but like , the image quality from a mirrorless camera is way better. I am trying to decide between 80D and a A6300. The minor minus in the Sony A6300 is that the lenses are soo stupidly expensive.

James Brace don’t dismiss DSLRs. Canon and Nikon have some very good cameras and more importantly the lenses. If you are shooting wildlife, it may be more about the lenses. Not just long ones but even a good but inexpensive macro lens will allow you to shoot small things you cannot with an ordinary lens.

Mirrorless camera marketing team : "Hey, lets take the mirror off from DSLR, take out some (or many) feature, then we market it as 'mirrorless camera' as the name of modern version of DSLR, and make DSLR outdated because of its size" Then 4 years later mirrorless camera become bigger, the lens also bigger (usually bigger than DSLR because the need distance between mirror and lens) much more like DSLR, and have feature like DSLR. while still dont have OVF. Good job for their marketing team
@McScott765 жыл бұрын
You might want to get out more. In no way is ANY mirrorless camera body or lens larger than a DSLR. I've tried them all -- Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc. Every single one is smaller, lighter and more compact -- bar none. In other words, you're spouting nonsense.
@yedijaluhur5 жыл бұрын
McScott76 for the body, if you compare the same sensor size then its gonna be almost the same. I own 5D, fuji xt1 and olympus pen... of course fuji is smaller than 5D and olympus is even smaller than fuji. Thats also the reason why i bought small mirrorless for travelling and still use 5D for work. If you compare the lens size, then its gonna be tricky, because you dont compare the same focal length and aperture but also the bokeh quantity (result). For example you cannot compare canon 70-200 f2.8 with fuji 50-150 f2.8 (almost 70-200 equivalent) even if they have almost the same focal lenght and same aperture, the result if different because different sensor give different bokeh, you should compare with canon 70-200 f4 instead. Also look at sony G-master lens. They are even bigger and bulkier than canon L series. And every sony full frame lens need flank distance between sensor and back of the lens, thats why sony FF lens have their shape like that. You can't defy physics, unless there are breakthrough in lens manufacturing.
@McScott765 жыл бұрын
@@yedijaluhur, The new Canon EOS RP is a full-frame camera that weighs 17 ounces. The 5D Mark II (which is the closest Canon DSLR equivalent in price/capability) weighs 27 ounces. The RP dimensions are also significantly smaller at 5.22 x 3.35 x 2.76" (48.3 cubic inches) vs. the Canon 5D Mark II, which is 5.67 x 4.35 x 2.94" (72.5 cubic inches). The numbers don't lie. mirrorless is indisputably smaller and lighter than DSLR when you compare apples to apples.
