I just ordered this camera, I've been itching to do so for a couple of months now, because I'm tired of the typical point and shoot, and cell phone pictures. As you've said, you can get really good shots with almost any device but I'm ready to flex a bit on my own without the "auto" guidance of said devices. Your videos have been super helpful!! Thank you! P.S. It's a nice butt lol

Although there is an option to Shoot B&W in the camera, it is much better to shoot in raw and convert to B&W in Lightroom, or whatever editing software you choose to use.

@TheHipsterguy: You Can see that under the Pictures he was mostly at 3,5 i guess there was much less light than you might tell from the Video. I recently learned that pushing the ISO is not a such bad idea as it might seem. Glad to see that the Fro does that too ;-)

It's nice seeing what a kit lens can do with someone that knows what they are doing. I will be ordering a d5100 soon but I don't know what pics look like from a kit lens. I would love to see more from you maybe showing a comparison between a kit lens and a 2.8 of the same zoom.

This is the biggest problem I have encountered. Everybody is either putting down the D3100, D3200, EOS 1100D... entry level cameras or they are comparing them to the high end D3s or 5Ds... I was shooting with a cell phone before I got a entry level DSLR.. why don't you welcome "us" the people that just came in to the DSLR world instead trashing our equipment... I'm sick of it hearing that my first camera (D3200) ever is the worst shit ever.

Good point. The 3000 series is still way more advanced than the ones before it. It gets more to the skill of the photographer than the gear. Sometimes someone hands me their cellphone to shoot them and they see my shot and act like I just performed some magic on their cellphone. No, it’s experience and a will to experiment.

Start shooting in Aperture mode. You just need to control ISO and Aperture. Shutter speed will be automatically adjusted. A lot of portraits are taken in Aperture mode.

@Synnergy08 I also have a Canon S5 IS that I use when I don't have to use the Olympus and pictures come out much better, even though it only has 8MP compared to the Olympus' 12MP. There's less grain, camera doesn't freeze, no under/overexposed pictures, manual focus, there's a lot of manual control and I can add stuff to the camera (flash, filters, lenses, etc.).

There is a setting in the camera to do black and white. Or you can take your photos in RAW mode then use software to change it to black and white. Nikon has free software for their camera and so do all the other camera makers.

@Synnergy08 I've got a D90 with the 50mm F18.D and it's a brilliant combo, if you're on a low budget then I'd go for the 50mm D instead of the G as the difference in quality for me was not enough to justify the price difference and I am extremely happy with it. I've also got the 18-135mm but this is not the best lens I've ever used. A lot of the time I find it's not sharp enough for me and also the variable aperture gets old. But it does have it's moments and I still do use it quite often,

I think the shots around the window gave the most to the pictures. Looking at the raw for this week, I was kind of disappointed to see that every bit of the sketch on it had been blown out. I think seeing that against the image to the left would have been a cool contrast for the shot.

This is why you should start with a consumer camera (eg D3100) over professional style models, amongst other reasons, of course. I use the Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i), and it beats point and shoots overall. All DSLRs have full manual control and all the rest of it anyway.

Hi there, what do you say about this camera please, "Nikon D3100 14.2 MP DSLR". It will be my first time to switch from digital camera, my main question is this camera has 14.2 Megapixels where are there is a digital camera which is not SLR but is 20.1 Mega pixel, so my basic question is if I have this DSLR camera with 14.2 Mega pixels and a digital camera of 20.1 megapixel, does it make a difference, please make me understand as I am not sure what difference will it make. I thank you in advance

@Synnergy08 Now this is where I need you to help me. If I was to get the Nikon D90, would it be good for me to get a 50mm f/1.8G or D (which one is actually better? - I love bokeh and portrait photography) and an 18-135 mm f/3,5-5,6G later on (I'm on a very low budget, I wouldn't be able to buy all this at once, but over time) or is there any better lens combo to get if you're a beginner DSLR user? Hey Jared! I reaaaaaally love all of your videos! I specially liked the one in the Pizzeria! I would really like you to do a long video with 18-55mm lens. I think most of the people that watch your videos are just getting started in the photography world. I mean, if we were all professionals we won't be watching this, we will be making money outside! I think your videos are so cool and you are such a good teacher! Yes, you are, you are funny and you teach really well, but may be in this video you tried to do some portraits with 18-55mm lens and you kind of gave up, I fell like the message in this video is "Sorry, I can't, this is such a crappy lens, I will use another one". I know it's not about the camera, you can use that D3100 and an amazing lens, but most people watching this (including me) want to learn and all we have is the kit lens 18-55mm. For example I have a Nikon D3200 with the kit lens and i would like to see how a professional like you uses it to take portraits, to shoot in a concert (may be near the stage), to shoot in a football game. Just with a basic camara like this, Nikon D3000, D3200.. And the kit lens. I think if you gave up, the message is "Oh, if Fro couldn't take a good portrait in this video, if Fro doesn't upload any other video with the kit lens in concerts, in some football match, basketball match, hockey match indoors, outdoors.. if Fro couldn't do it I definitely can't", but may be if you show YOU CAN do it, so we will be like "Oh, Fro can do it, I will practice, he is showing me it's possible". We may not take the greatest pictures in the world with an 18-55mm lens, we definitely won't have the greatest depth of field, but we may want to see what's the best we can do! Sorry for my not-so-perfect english but i think I made my point. I will keep on watching your videos, i learnt a lot in all of them, and I hope you read this and do something for the beginners that want to do the best we can with our crappy camara and crappy lens! Greating from Argentina.

+Juliana Figueroa As dpcriss said the 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 are both great lens for under $200. I have the D5300 with 18-55mm VRII, 55-200 VRII and the 35mm 1.8 and i use the 35mm all the time. I have a 7 month old baby and the photos that i can get with the 35mm (which is close to 50mm on the DX body) are as good as any pro. I have watched most of Jared's videos and have learned a lot and it is true the better the lens the better the photos. pick up the 35 or 50 1.8 you will love it.

+Jeff Lunn I think neither of you understood what i said. I mean that, he took some pictures and give up, and used a much better camera and lens. It would be a challenge if he demostrate that he can take good pictures and not giving up with a basic camera and a kit lens. I mean, i saw the video and I kind of felt that he was unconfortable with the camera, and he ends giving up and using a much better one. We already know great cameras and great lens give great pictures. I would like to see more of Jared using a kit lens and see what he can do just with that

@TheAbsurdity101 What you have seen on video was I a very small room with the only source of light... window. Adam was being photographed from the angle 90° as opposed to light coming from the window... so not frontally lit. ISO400 or 200 wouldn't be sufficient to even use 1/30 aperture time. Not to mention ISO100.

You get steady shots? That's pretty much all it does afterall. I just leave it on, it doesn't get in the way at all in my opinion. Just switch it off when you are taking long exposure shots, otherwise the VR could start correcting vibrations that are not there which would actually cause camera shake instead of reducing it^^
