Frollo is about to send what he believes to be an evil demon into Hell. He eventually loses balance, grabbing a devil statue’s head, which he looks into the eyes of. If you look into a devil’s eyes, that means that you have been a terrible person who has comitted horrible sins, and you are going to go to Hell. Frollo, still believing he is a good man, gives an expression of fear and confusion. That face basically describes Frollo saying “I was a righteous man! I haven’t sinned! I serve God! How is this possible!”. But because it’s the beauty of animation, he doesn’t need to say that, because ALL of that is in that one expression. He then lets out a horrified scream as he descends into the fiery pits of Hell where monsters like him belong. This is my favorite Disney villain death because it is so satisfying for Frollo to see who he actually is and get punished for it. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is also my favorite Disney film because there are so many great moments like that. It isn’t perfect, but when it is good, it is mind blowing.

Judge Claude Frollo; possibly the greatest disney villain of all time. Because he's not some powerful sorcerer or underworld god out to steal a throne, he's something that has always and will always be real; a fanatic. He is the most terrifying villain not only because he believes whole-heartedly in the righteousness of his terrible actions, but also because people like him are so very real, and most probably always will be. Jafar, Maleficent, Hades, these villains might be powerful, but they're safely contained in the realms of impossibility. Its the very human darkness of Frollo that makes him such a great villain.

I've always loved in this film how the only thing which truly frightened Frollo was Notre Dame herself. Despite having ignored the warning of the saints' eyes bearing down on him in the prologue - making him fear for his immortal soul - he continued to live a life where he sought to be the ultimate judge, believing that he was acting in its God's best interests. The fact that Notre Dame herself - the gargoyle - is what ultimately takes him down - it just goes to say that in the end there can only be one judge, and those who are too self righteous and arrogant to assume to believe they are above it or indeed committing unspeakable acts in its name, will ultimately in the end be the ones who are judged and condemned.

This scene is probably the most dramatic and well-written (and drawn scene) in the history of Disney. The facial expressions are gorgeous, it's almost as if they are real people, I daresay this was better than the rotoscoping of Snow White or Cinderella. The gargoyle "coming to life" is fantastic. Quasimodo's fear as he is holding on to both Notre Dame and Frollo, not knowing whether he can let it go of Frollo and live with the guilt of killing his surrogate father, or hold on and risk getting killed by him. The fact that Frollo is killed by the same gargoyle he jabbed his sword into (giggity), after his weight causes it to crumble, normally this wouldn't happen, but given the fact that Frollo had semi destroyed the gargoyle a minute earlier. The townspeople stopping the fight after seeing Frollo about to kill Esmeralda and Quasimodo is brilliant. The facial expressions are beautiful. Frollo quoting from the Bible, but somehow making it sound sinister, and even looking quite Satanic. Even ignoring the obvious Hell imagery and Gregorian chanting, this is a great scene, serious kudos to the animators, writers, producers, voice actors, Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. Oh yes, and there are Hidden Mickeys all over the cathedral.

That and the song hellfire too. For its lyrics after the guard tells frollo esmerelda escaped he sang “I’ll find her. I’ll find her even if I must burn Paris!” That’s gonna raise a lot of concern if they did have plans to bring that to the film.
@Potterholic15 жыл бұрын

@@dungeonmaster16 well, if they still potray him as the Minister of Justice. The remake will have elements of both this film and the novel (hopefully the endimg will go to the film side and not the novel side), and in the novel, Frollo was the archdeacon of Notre Dame, so hardly there would be place for that "i'll have her if i have to burn down all of Paris" moment to happen. But, the song "Hellfire" still has place even if Frollo is the Archdeacon. Proof: The North American stage adaptation of this film.
That's actually kinda what gargoyles were intended for! To scare away the Devil and ward off the presence of evil from entering the church. Like, "Frollo! Evil being! What I love so much about the devil-like gargoyle coming to life is that you could literally see this in two or three different symbolic meanings. On one hand, you could say that this was Satan coming to take Frollo down into hell. But then considering Frollo's previous "Hellfire" song, where he was hallucinating imagery everywhere from his obsession with Esmeralda while also trying to be just and holy, you could think that maybe Frollo was going more and more paranoid and insane (the markings around his eyes show he was lacking proper sleep) by the minute and that he hallucinated the gargoyle coming to life to take him to hell. And then can also lead into Frollo's conscience: even though Frollo thinks he's doing the right thing, we know he isn't and that he's lying to himself and blinding himself from the truth. But maybe deep inside, Frollo does realize it, and his conscience finally made him see the gargoyle turning into Satan as he realizes what he's done and that he's being punished for it. So many possibilities, it could be one of these, just s it could be all of them.
@debymello47567 жыл бұрын
I do know this is old, but i have another! You should know gargoyles are make to scare evil spirits away, but nobody data anything about good spirits. My theore Quasy have a good and amost pure spirit, so, to him, the gargoyles gets life as friends and are nice to him; Frollo did a lot of bad things all the time, and this made him join evil spirits, so the gargoyle got life to him as a devil-like being, that scares the life out of him I write like a drug user?

This scene really puts something else into perspective. His Hellfire Song. Is Frollo really hallucinating the Hooded Monks, or is he actually being tempted for real by devils? At first I thought it was in his head. But look at how he died. Also the image of Esmeralda not only as a seductive flame spirit almost like a Succubus. Then as a pale white smoke in her shape that gives him that seductive kiss? It may be that Frollo had evil spirits tempt him all his life. Leading him to be the worst sinner of all. But he had a choice to ignore them and follow a truly righteous path. One of love rather than hate. Also, there are no Monks in the Catholic church who wear all red. You have Cardinals who dress in all red, but not monks. And we see they're shadowy forms afterwards. Which suggests there are devils using a self righteous hypocrite to do their dirty work for him. Maybe even driving him mad with his own desires to feed off his energy the whole night as they haunt him. Which is why he barely slept and told Phoebus about the "fire place issues" the night before.
