First off, I see a long line of players on here who are grateful for this channel and it does indeed stand out a lot compared to the standard fare in chess instruction. I've been playing chess off and on since 1972 when my uncle Willie taught me the game, and it's been mostly off because every time I made an effort to try to improve I always ended up disappointed. It was like going to a school that taught kindergarten and the next grade was university, and when you get there you are for the most part lost, where you might admire all those cool grandmaster moves but it's too far over your head, now, later, probably ever. Then I found chess on KZbin and finally I found material geared toward the common player, actually teaching us how to get better, not stuff like let's look 10 moves ahead and I'll show you why that line was inaccurate even though you can't think that far ahead with all these variations and maybe never will. This piqued my interest and I was not only excited but could see this finally working. I'd rather watch a game played against a 600 rated player than a 2600 one even though I'm well beyond 600 but that's closer to me than 2600 that's for sure, I'd see some mistakes pointed out that I might also be making, the teaching was RELEVANT. Here's what you are doing wrong, here's now to fix it, not can you find the move that Tal missed and such. This channel is simply fabulous and I made it through the first 100 and am looking forward to watching all of them including the ones to come. Thank you so much Robert for making a real difference in the world of the common chess player!

Agreed. I consider Robert Ramirez to be one of the best teachers out there along with Daniel Naroditsky and Simon Williams. I wish he would create a Pirc course on Chessable since the existing one does not follow his ideas and strategies. His unique approach to the Pirc is very good.

100% correct about the endgames! I didn't care about learning them, but when I finally took some time off openings and tactics, while I've only learned a basic level of endgame strat, what you've taught me so far has put me far above my current competition when I get to endgames. Especially when I've been down material, it at least gives me a chance to stay in the game when I can find those moves that create counter play. I just recently had a game that I was down 2 minor pieces, though had more pawns, but I was able to keep pushing the pawns as a threat and eventually outplayed my opponent and got the win. It's been a huge confidence boost and proves how important these fundamental ideas are to learn. Looking forward to the next 100 vids!

I also wanted to share a little feedback on the series thus far.. This has been engaging enough that up until now I haven't even watched anything else, but as we move toward more advanced instruction, I came to realize that I need to take a step back and spend more time on the fundamentals. I really like that this is a progressive series but one of the drawbacks is that by continually moving forward we leave certain areas behind that players may still need work on and they have to look elsewhere for. In particular, we could benefit from spending more time on avoiding mistakes that a player at our current level may be making, and especially in defending better against attacks. This is a product of how chess is taught in general, where we focus way too much on attacking and not enough on knowing how to defend. I just lost a game to a player that I feel I am better than, and was up a piece and a pawn and ended up losing to due to needing to get better at defending, and this really got me focused on getting better at this. We need to be spending at least the same amount of time thinking from our opponent's perspective, and while this series touches on that we could spend much more time on this. I'd also like to see a lot more variety with openings, and I don't just mean the opening videos, as this carries over to the games that you play. I don't mind learning more about the KID, the KIA, and the Pirc but I don't really play these openings so this is of limited value to me. I still plan on watching all of these and still feel this is a fabulous series but as it has evolved it's becoming more of a sideline for me, to be used more as a side dish now, some great teaching for sure, which I still highly recommend for anyone, and the fact that I have gone through the first 100 without watching anything else is certainly testimony to that. It is time to work more on other needs though to keep my game moving forward.

An interesting story. Leaves out a lot of personal info but that's cool. As Fischer's favorite chess coach CJS Purdy would say, "It's all about the chess and nothing but the chess." It speaks volumes that your coach at the Cuban chess academy--a praiseworthy institutional holdover from the Soviet era--started you off solving puzzles from a tactics primer. Right up GM Huschenbeth's alley: "Tactics are the foundation of everything else." Would beg to differ with your contention that becoming a National Master is "no big deal" or that chess can improve IQ but that's beside the point. Your instructional viddies are gold and perhaps the best of their kind on the web. Best wishes on your pursuit of a Fide Master or IM title. Cheers!
@nal2us22 жыл бұрын
This video is solid gold Robert. Question: You bring up a good point about getting on a schedule day to day with the different aspects of the game that one should focus on.... on a regular schedule. With that in mind would you be so kind as to share with myself and everyone else here what you would consider to be a good sample weekly training/study schedule with the subjects one should focus on from Sunday to the next Saturday? You had some real good ideas in the video that you used as an example, ( one day openings, tactics, and game play, next day something similar but slightly different). I love that idea and would love to see you present us all with your idea of the perfect weekly study guide .... again for all 7 days of the week. Cant wait to see what you say!!!!

Like in Australia- our middle school starts at 12 also Going on the history of the development of chess it is obvious that those 7 years cost you vital brain connections that would mean you would probably be a grandmaster. Almost definitely. Nevertheless you are still a highly talented player and are a National Master which is an achievement in itself particularly considering you get many kids not missing out like you did yet only getting to 1600-1800. Considering your history you have done extremely well. The main thing is you are doing what you love so as they say when you do what you love you never work another day in your life

great storytelling! btw, i want to suggest a lesson about visualization/calculation, especially blindfolded. i see that some GMs calculate by closing their eyes/looking elsewhere (naroditsky, hikaru). i assume it would be easier to calculate multiple lines if the board is printed clearly in my head so that i won't be distracted with the pieces on the board. i have been practicing on memorizing coordinates, but it's very hard to see the dark and light squares in my head. Congrats on reaching lesson 100. You've been a big help for many and we can all see your dedication! Edit: Woah, i commented this before 44:45 where you're talking about blindfold chess. What do you think of daily chess? Do you think I would be able to get the same results by playing this instead of the 15 minute ones or even blitz. I may have maybe two hours a week to have the time to play chess and I like to spend that time going over lessons and tactics. So daily chess like 1 day or 3 days per move works for me. I have pockets of time here and there. My goal is to become an expert. You are a Great coach and I thank you for getting into You Tube. I really enjoyed your story. It’s interesting that your first teacher thought you were too old to learn. If he could see where you are now.
@NMRobertRamirez3 жыл бұрын
Hello Norman! It will be a pleasure to help you reach your goal of becoming an expert 😎 Regarding your question about daily Chess, I think it is good as an extra, but it should not replace live games. If you want to reach your goal, you will have to play in tournaments and tournament games require you to know Chess (tactics and everything else you are learning from lessons in those two hours a week) but they also require the ability to focus and be consistent throughout the entire match. There are certain skills and abilities we develop playing live games that we cannot get from daily games. This is just my personal opinion, but I would recommend that you take 30 minutes of those 2 hours and play at least a 15|10 game. We also need you to get comfortable with playing under time pressure. Even if you start a tournament game with 2 hours, you might get to time pressure and if you have never experienced it, you will throw away everything you accomplished up to that point in the game. Hope this makes sense and feel free to ask me any other questions you might have 👍

I took your advise and played a few 15/10 games and it didn't go so well. I know I can play better but I just couldn't think fast enough. In daily games I have a few days at best to figure things out. Looks like I'm going to have to change the way I play from now on if I want to improve. Its just as you said and for that I am grateful. Oh and my 5min games are even worse 🤣

@@nrmz22 I know exactly what you mean. We have all been there! Some of my younger students jokingly call the Chess timer "evil" lol But then, after a while they do not even mind it. When you use the timer in person, it is even more challenging because you have to remember to press it after you move. Do not worry about blitz for now. Instead, get comfortable with 15|10 or even 30 mins. And of course, keep me posted 👍

Hi, Robert! QUESTION: Could you include in your course a tutorial, how to play as black when you come across other first move than 1.e4 or 1. d4 (especially against 1. c4 (English), 1. f4 (Bird), 1.g3 or 1.Nf3). Thanks for your amazing efffort!!:)

Hello! I am planning to cover almost every opening little by little including the English. In the interim, consider playing the King's Indian Defense set-up against it 👍

Not being a fluent Spanish speaker, I’m intrigued by Roberto Graus’ chess anthology. Would you say that your lessons cover a lot of the material in these books? I don’t mean he talks about forks in the books and you talk about forks in your lessons…that would be in any chess lesson series probably. I mean that clearly this book series was a major part of your education. Do you think that some of the pedagogy and spirit of Graus books are found in these lessons? I know I can find books on similar topics but I feel like I’m missing out an a valuable perspective since I can’t read these books and there are apparently no English translations. I hope my question is clear.

Thanks for this! I just learned how to play chess at a VERY advanced age and I’m not interested in a high rating - just fun. Your videos have provided an excellent framework for my development - and I thank you!

Robert, this is a terrific video (as all of yours are). Good luck on your run to the next title! One question: Where did you film this video? (That doesn't look like a U.S. electrical outlet!)

Fascinating and interesting to hear 'your chess story'. I wish you success on your journey to the next level. On another note, I have loved your videos on the Pirc and Kings Indian defence, so much so that my win rate as black is so much better than when I play as white. I suspect that I am not the only 'student' with this situation. I would love you to do a video on the Catalan type opening which you mentioned, just to show the basics. And the most important question, does your wife play chess? And if not, have you tried to teach her?😀😀😀😀
@NMRobertRamirez3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you! Glad you liked this one 😎 Regarding the openings as white, we will certainly talk more about it -especially the Catalan. And my wife learned the basics in Cuba, but she is not into it. She learns fast, but she does not feel attracted to it or any table games 🤷♂️

Actually wish Robert would do some more on the KIA, especially those lines in which Black plays ...dxe4 and then ...Bc5. Usually have trouble against that line for some reason. One can always hope...

Robert.... maybe you can help me with this issue. I find myself stuck at about a 1350 to 1400 rating currently. I have identified part of my problem being that I am WAAAAY to impulsive with my moves not taking time to see..... the whole board and also I sometimes miss threats from the opponents bishops on the long diagonals. Are there any tips you can provide to address the above-mentioned issues and assist me in getting out of the 1300/1400 vortex? hehe. Any comments as always are greatly appreciated.
