I am more or less in the same page right now. I do love offroad oriented bikes (dual-sport like your 701, or my modded XT660, etc), but truth is, nowadays my skill level totally makes it possible to ride a 800-1200cc offroad without any problems... and i have to admit the extra challenge (and extra comfort even offroad) at this time sound more appealing than a very easy very light motorcycle. To me, trying the norden 901 was game changer...and I would probably buy the 890R if i had the money for any of them xD The africa twin also is surprisingly good :) Ps: offroad is literally 500m away from my house...so your reasons are even stronger than mine :p

Hey thanks a lot for sharing my friend, it’s reassuring that I make sense to an offroad legend like you. You are a much better rider than I am, but I think what you are saying is true for me too. I feel like I’ve established good enough of a base level to tackle bigger bikes again - not only riding skill but the experience to know when to turn as well. The way you handled that 901 I can definitely understand why you’re intrigued by a bigger bike. I must admit I like the base model Africa Twin, it does tick a lot of my boxes. I guess time will show, and we have a lot of time to talk about this in november 😉

@@JohannesDalenMC i believe the AT is better for on-road use than the 901/890. Honestly, they didnt strike as "great touring cruisers"... More like very big dual sports...so perhaps in your situation the AT or the SA1290 would make even more sense. Its not just about the riding skills, but also about the level of control/trust you have on the tracks you are following. I dont know how it is in Norway, but if you only ride on pre-explored "adventure rated" tracks, some you might even know yourself, then you know exactly what you are going to find and what sort of bike you will feel comfortable with. Here in Portugal there are 47287582 million interconnected tracks, so when you go about exploring or recording new tracks for tours, sometimes you end up in tricky situations...that has been the biggest deterrent for getting an heavier bike (my biggest bike ever was a Super Tenere 750, 1997, 235kg :) )...thing is, even while exploring i do less and less mistakes (cause you can basically predict the future after a while xD) so a bigger bike is no longer the end of the world. Keep us posted! Ps: i will reply to your email! I am waiting info!

@offroad-offcourse I follow and enjoy your channel, so I know what you’re saying. Perhaps in your case is the added challenge to attract you, but in my view big bike vs light bike off-road it’s just a different kind of experience: whatever your skill level, you just won’t do the same things on them. Without considering than big bikes get damaged expensively when dropped.

I'm in my 50's and have had about 25 bikes. One thing I've learned; if I sell a bike I still really enjoy, even if the reasons are logical ones, I often regret the decision. I now wait until I've really turned the corner and gone off a bike before I sell it. In the end, I've found you really need at least 2 bikes. It's amazing to have more than one setup and the ability to enjoy a totally different experience at the turn of a key. To do this, I'd happily ride older, lower cost, mid-range bikes with less technology. They can be just as rewarding as new ones, if not more so. I'm 5 1/2 years into 701 ownership and have made it a lightweight adv' bike like yours. I love it and I'm not selling it, but that's because I also have something quite different for the road. Neither bike is perfect for everything, but between the two of them, I can cover most bases pretty well. There are plenty of good bikes out there that you can buy for about the cost of what you will lose by selling the 701. - Just a thought.
@gregwatts11592 жыл бұрын
I should say, finding what bike(s) work for you is all part of the motorcycle journey and we are all different. I've stopped looking for THE bike and just accept that I have bikes I like for now, but that I might change in the future. But having been through quite a few bikes, I seem now to be a lot better at selecting bikes that satisfy for the longer term, like my 701.
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for chiming in Greg, you raise several good points here. I agree that two bikes is the best bet, and as soon as this next adventure bike is in place, I will start saving for an enduro/mx bike to take to the local track. If I kept the 701 for dirt riding, and bought a more street oriented bike for long hauls. What I don’t like the thought of is that if I ride for a month long trip down in Europe on the street oriented bike and come across a trail that I’d really want to explore it would be sad if I had to turn around because of the bike. Yes it’s all about the compromise, but because of thoughts like that I find myself thinking about one bike to do it all with. Regarding the journey you are spot on. I have a lot of fun doing this and reporting about my findings and people seem to get engaged which is really cool. The only downside is that it’s not cheap to mod and change bikes, but I’m having a lot of fun and learning a lot.

Johannes it so funny you are posting this now. I just did the the Idaho BDR on my 701 which is basically set up very similar to yours. Rade Garage fairing, I have giant loop bags. The off road was great. I was definitely the most nimble on the trails of all my friends. I could do things they could not but we traveled 500 miles on tarmac to start the BDR and it was painful and I was blown all over the road. There was a huge wind storm on the way home and my friends were able to drive through on their GS’s and 890 Adventure but I had to pull over and literally press against my bike to prevent being blown over. I am most likely going to get the large KTM adventure. I have see what it can do off-road and know its very agile but has the weight and comfort for highway driving. The great thing about the KTM is that is has the spirit of a motorbike more than something like a GS. Best of luck to you. I hope you find what you are looking for. Thanks for the post.

Refreshing to see such honesty. I’m the same, if I want something I want it yesterday. Last year I wanted a road oriented dual purpose bike which can carry a pillion and bought a 2nd hand Vstrom 1000. After a couple of rides I realised that it’s far too heavy for my liking and too tall geared. Also I wasn’t taken by the styling so I decided to sell it. For me,low weight is the NO 1,2 and 3 issue and it has to feel like a dirt bike. So a KTM 690 is now in the garage with all the associated accessorising. One day I might decide it isn’t the way to go and it will go too. I still have my modified 500, which is the best registered dirt bike ever made. So don’t be so hard on yourself, do what feels right at the time and remember a bike is a lifeless lump of metal/plastic and can be sold whenever, unlike our pets or children. As you said, life is too short to stick with a bike if another priority comes to the surface. We look forward to your journey.

Couldn't be happier; a full 100 kg lighter than the Beemer. And even more capable. Don't sell your 701; work additional nightshifts, sell whatever from your attic or basement, and buy another bike if you want. But keep the Husky!

I owned an R1200GS and thought it was a fantastic road bike but it was intimidating for me to take it off-road. In 2020 I bought a 701 and tricked it out like yours. 7500 miles later I built up my confidence riding off-road. Now I bought an R1250GS and set it up for 50/50 riding and couldn't be happier. The 701 was the stepping stone I needed to build my off-road confidence. The big GS is no 701 off-road but I can take it 80% of the places that I ride my 701 and the GS is not as tiring to ride. Now, like you, I think the 701 is going to be up for sale.

In AZ, lot's of dirt 30 mins or less. Always rode dirt then I got the '19 FE450, GAVE me a taste of the road and I wanted more. 2020 I managed to get 1 of very few 701 LR's in AZ. I uncorked it with a arrow titanium full exhaust, computer upgrade got rid of the bulky intake. Super fast. Added Nomad ADV lightweight luggage rack very strong and engine guard and every other guard I could add pretty much, Bark Busters of course. Kutvek custom graphics all I could find available for the 701lr very nice. Scott stabilizer. For me one of the first things was get rid of the Enduro tires. But the real deal sealer is I found a Madstad windshield and bracket assembly that works great it's removable when I'm on the trails and it's totally adjustable. Gets my head completely out of the Wind along with the rest of my body I feel like I'm on a couch when I'm riding down the highway now, it's awesome. Of course I added the Comfort XL Seat Concepts seat, must have. I also have recluse clutches on both my bikes my numb left hand loves it. 30 Mi of single tracking with the 701LR while back. 120 mph down the highway it's an amazing bike but it's a pig when you have to pick it up, nothing like the bigger bikes though full of gas it's still only weighs 380 lb. I don't want to get rid of either one of them 5' 10" 175 lb, I pretty much always have extra gas for anybody that might run out LOL 6.6 gallons. This bike is truly set up for touring with the interest of serious off-roading when you get there. It just eats the bumps up

Hey guys, Hey Johannes. Thanks for the video and your experiences! I've got a massive Africa Twin 1000 L Adventure Sports with a shit load of uggrades on it. I am thinking of selling it, because before I had so much time to ride + had no car and it was my daily use. I could ride 3 mountain passes after work, without any stress. Now I live somewhere else, not beside the mountain passes anymore, I enjoy offroad the most, riding TET all the time I go. But when it gets very technically and steep, it's of course to heavy. I am the guy who brings all his camping gear and sleeps outside, doing a fire and living my life. Now I wanted to change to a 701 with RADE or even Auroa Rally build, but I am not sure, if I will miss the long driving distance comfort of my Africa Twin. I have massive butt hurtings, even from that bike! I just send it to a guy which made the seat complete new with more comfort. So I am unsure if I not just would die, riding a 701 for 2 hours. 😅 And I will lose so much money, if I would sell the Africa Twin, cause it's got 60.000 km on it (did that in 3 years). But everyone knows, that it's nothing with a Honda. So what do you think should I do? Anyone here, what can you recommend? I can either buy a 701 used, with 50.000 km for a cheaper price (6000 Euro) or some other 701 with less km for almost the same price and have a second, smaller bike. Or I upgrade my Africa Twin with a complete new Öhlins suspension, optimized for me, my weight, my needs, for offroad. Then I would put a new muffler on, which looks like the rally ones and take the Reckless 80 Mosko Moto instead of the 120 L with racks! But I am so unsure what to go. It's a one of a kind Africa Twin, 30 years Africa Twin edition with the special three colour's. I am very big, I need comfort. But with all the Outback Motortek crash bars and luggage system on it, with 15 kgs off gear, I get to around 280 kg! That's so massive.

That’s the same reason I sold my T7 a year ago, but ever since I sold it I have not once come across a road or obstacle that I wouldn’t be able to cross on a T7. I'm fortunate to be an old man (66 next month) and have 3 bikes and all have seen dirt some more than others. I ride my KTM 350 EXC-F strictly at sanctioned offroad events. I have a Honda XR650L which I cruise around the back roads on and will do some exploring on. I just rode a Dual Sport/Adventure ride Sunday which was 150 miles of all 2 track dirt, gravel and blacktop roads. Just because I have no real place to ride offroad like you (unless I enter events for that purpose) I also have a BMW R1200GSA. Mainly all blacktop roads but I will go down any of the gravel or dirt roads I see. I run 90/10 tires which aren't ideal for offroad but I'm not crazy with the throttle hand. I've been riding offroad since I was 17. I bought the XR650L in 2016 which was my first time riding blacktop. Started doing longer rides and wife mentioned going so I bought the GSA. Absolutely love this bike, its just so fun to ride and comfortable. BTW I still don't consider myself a street bike rider because I have a fear of getting hit by a car. I only have about 1 mile of any real traffic before I'm out in the country just sight seeing and doing what I love. I've been contemplating buying a Gas Gas ES700 for some sanctioned Adventure rides. I'd have to sell the XR650L which I really don't want to do because it is so easy to maintain. Valve checks are so easy and I can do that myself. The XR is so darn dependable and wears like iron. I'm almost at 15,000 miles with zero problems except brakes, tires and I finally put new spockets and a chain on her. Just put gas in her and ride. Good luck with what ever decision you make. Hopefully one day you can add more bikes to your stable. It only took me over 42 years to have 2 bikes at one time and now 3.

Hey Johannes I totally understand your predicament. The 701 is capable on tarmac and highway but definitely not the weapon of choice. I've ridden the current AT and the ktm. The Ktm is an absolute animal, amazing on the road and crazy power, would be great for two up touring but I feel it would be a real handful off road, to much power and too top heavy. Super capable yes, but I reckon it would be pretty stressful when things get tricky. I definitely advise you not to write off the GSA, for your use case and as a big guy who potentially wants to take you're good lady on the back, there isn't much out there that does it better. I sold my 690 for somewhat similar reasons. I put a seat concepts seat on it and still, my groin area would fall asleep after 30 minutes of highway riding due to the narrow seat and resulting pinch point. I also wanted cruise control and wind screen with some sort of power pod along with the windscreen. When I added up the cost, I realized I should have bought the 890 instead. It was at that same time that I discovered the 901 which hadn't been released in the states yet, but I was able to put a deposit at my local dealer. I now am just under 2000 miles with zero regrets. I thought the extra weight would be an issue on the trails but it's actually negligible and any minuses in that regard are far outweighed by the capabilities on the street. The Norden is an awesome bike! I highly suggest the paltry extra $200 for explorer mode. I was very surprised by the significant change to throttle response in rally mode and slip control is adjustable on the fly with the easily accessed up and down arrow. I can't give a balanced opinion on the different levels of slip control because I just had the software installed last weekend. The 690 is an awesome bike, but if you have to travel very far on it to get to the trails, get the KTM890 or the Norden901. I personally think KTM makes the ugliest bikes on wheels but that's purely subjective and worthless input.

I completely understand where you are coming from I bought a brand new DRZ for commuting mostly for economic reason, I chose it over other dual sport and small bore sport bikes. I wanted the DRZ for the torque advantage over other bikes. To make a long story short I end up buying a used FZ-6 and it was the right bike for what I needed. Fast forward about 5 years down the road I found myself in Honduras and again with a DRZ and the FZ-6. Once on pavement the FZ was far superior even for the short commute, but during rainy season dirt section would be so rough it took too long of the FZ so it became mostly a touring bike. This is about the same time the T7 was released and I figured this was going to be my perfect machine and kept waiting for them to show up in dealers. After some deeper thinking I realized the Super Tenere was actually the ideal bike and could be had used in Honduras. With all the dirt roads chain maintenance is an issue plus most of my long distance riding was done 2 up it made the best choice. I realize there are better big bore bike out there, but Yamaha is the the only one with good dealer support in Honduras and also it easily the most reliable big bore bike on the market. I really loved doing trips on that bike it is super comfortable, handles well and was off-road capable enough for me. Fast forward to today living back in the US I would likely buy a Triumph Tiger Rally or Rally Pro. Probably not quite as comfortable as the Super Tenere especially 2 up but I think it splits the difference between on and off road better and is much lighter than the Tenere. If you want something more off-road I would recommend the Africa Twin or more on road focused I would have the say Super Tenere or Tiger 1200. I am not a fan of the BMW GS.

Compromising on dirt capability is not what I want, as that is the most fun and I’m already giving up a lot going from a 701. I have a lot to think about and time will tell what I end up with. Have a great day!

Hi Joannes, like many of us you’re on a journey to find the perfect do-it all bike, but I’m afraid that just does not exist 😀 It will always be a compromise... from my perspective, you need more than one bike, and perhaps go for cheaper ones, but the ones that are really specialized for their expected job. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience

You have definitely valid arguments. Even me that mostly ride on gravel and forest tracks got me a Twin cylinder. More room on the bike, handles my weight and packing better. This without significantly reduce the capability for where we legaly can ride. It works great even where we are not allowed to ride... when I got me a sweet middleweight i thoughtvthat i should ride more mature and so, that only happened to some extent. I'm really happy. I basically went trough the same experience. Had T7, bought a used 690, sold it again soon after. I still have my T7 and I am now more happy with it than before. All bikes are compromises so I guess it's just best to settle on something and enjoy it. I realized very quickly that the 690 would not work for me, because as you said, it made me dread any kind of distance riding. I did not want to take it on any longer trip because of that and that's the main point of what I want to do with a bike. Before I hated the top heavyness and weight of the T7, now I just like it for what it is, a reasonably comfortable touring bike that still has a good offroad performance. Still not a blind fanboy for it but I never was for any bike I had. As I said in the last video I did not have enough offroad near my house either for the 690 to make sense in my opinion, which is why I sold it, even though I loved how extremely light it felt. My next plan for it is convert the T7 to tubeless. I would have loved if it was that way from the factory.

You might want to consider a DR650. They are very low center of gravity and right between the DRZ and KLR in weight, a really nice sweet spot. I wish they made a modern street engine in that frame instead of the taller heavier top heavy KLR...
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion Andrew. I haven’t ridden the DR650, but I struggle to see why a DR650 would be better than a 701 if a 701 is too dirt oriented? The DR650 is probably a more relaxed ride, but weight is similar and both engines are thumpers. Am I missing something? 🙂
@andrewstambaugh80302 жыл бұрын
@@JohannesDalenMC Yes, you are: DR650 = low center ~365lbs Tenere = high center ~450lbs So your missing about a 100lbs up high! ...That puts it in the weight class of a klx250, a nice trail-focused dual sport, but the DR is a much more capable bike that feels far lighter than it actually is. And a used one here can be had for $3,500-4,500, so no $10k+ risks on buying.

Selling that and riding a dual sport for a year made me learn the basics much faster on an appropriate bike. My plan is to ride that until I gain confidence and then re-look at the T7 in a few years. Maybe turning the 300 into a super moto

The number one thing I’ve learned from this little journey of mine is that it’s so much better to start on a smaller, more forgiving bike when it comes to offroad riding. Yes that’s a bit obvious, but when I got into offroad riding I didn’t know that, and it wasn’t a lot of focus on that either. I saw people throwing T7s around like a dirt bike, so I thought that was possible for me too. Happy to hear you started on a 300L and moving on from there, instead of the other way around. Johannes, it is a problem that all of us face. I just do hope that you test ride the alternatives first before selling because now on my third 690, I find most bikes including the T7 sluggish in comparison and lacking in suspension refinement and braking due not so much to the 690 brakes but lack of weight which brings the bike up really sharp. The 690/701 is the razor sharp Ferrari of dual sports in all departments in comparison to most bikes out there. It is a second and a half quicker to 100km than my Triumph 1200 speed twin for example. For pure highway use it is of course more tiresome than something like a Tiger 900, which you should try because strangely, it is much easier to lift after a drop than a T7 and probably has the best wind protection of any adventure bike made. That said I have made many long trips on the 690's including New York to Miami and the 7,500 mile TAT, and I would not personally pick any other bike for going RTW. To me as a 6'2' tall guy with long legs, the ergos on a bike are more essential than other aspects of comfort and the 690/701 have exceptional ergos (whereas I found the T7 uncomfortable because the clutch cover constantly got in the way of my boot and that causes you to twist your body which after a while causes spinal problems). But if your bike use is 80 per cent highway then OK, maybe getting something like the TIGER 900 would be better. Good luck.

I hear you mate, having a similar internal conversation re: changing needs and what suits those diverse requirements. I'm lucky to have 2 bikes, but neither are good options for 2 up touring, and that's a big thing I'm looking for now. One's an on-road biased bike, the other is a dual sport. Thinking seriously at replacing both with either a Tiger 900 variant (i.e. Rally) or a F850GS.

The eternal search for the mythical "unicorn". I was in the same exact spot as you are, but i've accepted the reality earlier and much straighter. I've entered the "adventure" scene in 2015 and got myself an 2011 XT660Z Tenere, which was a great entry level bike to get used to riding offroad on gravel and dirt roads, but also for touring 2 up on secondary roads in the countryside or even abroad, which i've done lots of time, despite low power and monocylinder engine. Time passed and in 5 years i've gotten almost 60k km on it and it was time to move on so i got a 2016 Africa Twin which is a superb piece of machine...wish i've gotten it a couple of years sooner :)). Great for dirt roads and touring, dedicated traction control and abs buttons and you can easily tune the suspension for when you travel 2up and luggage. Here in Romania, i'm in the same spot as you are: if i have to go to a gathering with the guys somewhere in the country, i have to first travel on tarmac for 400-500km to do a 100-150km offroad track and than come back home...so for 150km of offroad i have o do a total of 1000km touring...the answer is in front of your eyes... If you can't afford 2 bikes, than you have to go with what you consider to be the best compromise for you, but for 90% on road and even touring 2up...you have to choose a bike that has good power, good brakes and comfortable...but that won't be a light bike :). You just have to accept that and thus pick your tracks where you and the bike will feel good...end of story...you just can't have'em all with one bike.

I couldn't find the other bikes - no inventory in my area - but was able to buy a Tuareg fairly easily from a local dealer. I've ridden a WR250R for a while and have always felt more comfortable in dirt than on the road so my learning curve was different. I will try to find a dual sport with about 450 cc's next year, but I am really enjoying the Tuareg. It carries its weight lower than the T7 (so I'm told), has tubeless tires and cruise control. I find that today's luxuries become tomorrow's necessities and it will be hard going back to dual sport for long road miles. Good luck on your journey! We grow and our needs change. You can ride virtually anything offroad so pick the ride that works for you. I came from the heavyweight ADV class to an ADV modified 701... and I'd never go back to the heavyweight class for offroad biased riding (my TAT ride starts next Thrusday). BUT... I didn't sell my Multistrada when I bought the 701 and I ride both about the same amount for touring (just depends on what kind of touring it'll be). Out in Colorado last year we ran across all sorts of bikes... and you could accurately predict their speed just by looking at them, the dirt bikes would be flying, the middleweight bikes like the 701 would be slower but still moving along... the heavyweight bikes would be slow (not many heavyweights on the passes though). This mirrors my experience, I'm fastest offroad on a light bike, slowest on a heavy one. Also at altitude when something does go wrong I'd much rather be on a lighter bike (picking up even the 701 can be tough at over 12000 feet)
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Good summary David, and I agree with you that any bike can be ridden offroad. Especially here in Europe where most of the TETs aren’t that difficult. I guess it comes down to fun factor and practicality with the lighter bikes. They are easier to ride, easier to ride fast, and easier to pick up.

Hey Johannes, you're not the first rider to make a bike purchase based on aspiration rather than actual usage. A guy i know bought a Panigale because he wanted to slay the track on weekends, but he has a 3hr commute during the week with lots of traffic. He loves the bike (who wouldn't) but he said it is so uncomfortable at low speeds and stop/start traffic, and it just makes him tired. I planned to sell my humble, unassuming lttle TransAlp for a larger, more off-road capable ADV so i could do a staged tour of Australia, but over the last 3yrs with CoVid lockdowns and tightening economic conditions my needs have changed alot. My bike has become my daily, and at the moment I spend all my time in the saddle commuting to work, riding local trails and just getting around. The staged trip remains an aspiration as does the bigger, badder ADV purchase. I'm glad now that i kept my TA, which owes me nothing and meets my current needs very well. So, don't feel bad - needs change, priorities change, families grow up and time becomes a more precious commodity. I've learned to just appreciate being on my bike everyday no matter the purpose of the trip. I hope this helps. I'm sorry it's so long 😁👍

I feel you... At a certain point I had a KTM 1190 Adventure which I took to Morocco. It could comfortably take the amount of luggage I had with me at the time but I couldn't stop thinking I would have so much more fun on a lighter bike. Result: I bought the KTM 690 Enduro R. In Belgium, at least where I live, there aren't any real fun parts to ride the motorcycle (in my opinion, comparing to other destinations in Europe). Since I only had the room for 1 motorcycle, the lack of "road performance" of the 690 really started to annoy me. After that I bought a Honda Africa Twin 1100 which wasn't a bad motorcycle but wasn't "really good" in anything either. Now I have the 890 Adventure R which I took off roading in the Pyrenees mountains couple of months ago and to be honest, this is the best “compromise” I ever tried. There is no perfect motorcycle but to me, at this point, it comes really close. I bought a manual tire machine so I can change my tires relatively quick from a road to offroad. That way I don’t have to choose a compromise tire. On the bigger / midweight bikes tire choice is so important…

Don't go past the 890. It pulls me, 95kg, and my wife (won't tell you her weight) and a bit of gear, along with no issues. And, off-road, it really the best performing adv I've ever ridden. I got rid of mine, as you did, to go back to a light weight drz and have regretted every day since. Drz is light and fun, but the 890 just did it better. Low centre of gravity, it feels so low, but isn't, and more than enough power to pull two people up the side of a mountain ... and i did exactly that. The big ktm's are a blast, but heavy off-road and don't handle all that well in the ad stuff. Better than most but not as good as the 890. And picking them up, well, you'll need to get back into power lifting just to do so. Good luck choosing but always remember, the bigger it is, the harder it falls, and the harder it is to pick up ... and you'll be doing it a lot.

What you said in the beginning is exactly why i got the Africa Twin. Being in southern Texas i will have to ride a minimum of 11 hours to get the New Mexico BDR or the middle part of the TAT. The AT is super capable off road and pretty good on road. Sometimes i get carried away and start riding my AT like my dirt bikes🤣. Good luck on choosing the next bike.

‘Happy’ to hear that I’m not the only one this far away from the trails 😅 The AT ticks a lot of boxes for sure, and I got a pretty sweet deal on a ‘21 model the other day. Stay tuned for what I end up buying 😁 Thank you.

We all have different needs as riders we all live in different types of places. Sometimes reviews don't cover that, but go for what you need. I have regretted selling all the bikes I have had, but you know what, we only have so many bikes we will be able to ride and own before we die. I no longer hold on too tight to my bikes if I move on that's fine because I know I only have so much time, no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

We all have our own preferences. I moved from Africa to the Netherlands a couple years ago. Been dirt biking since age 13. Had many bikes of all sizes but ended up doing adv rides in Africa on 450's mostly. When I moved here, i had exactly the same thoughts as you and bought a 990S (great suspension) I did a trip to Sweden from NL and the long tar sections were really not nice to ride. Actually it sucked. I now trailer my Rally 501 to Spain, Norway, Sweden. So much nicer to chill in the cage and have the ultimate dirt bike when I'm on the trail. I can cover 1000km with bike on the trailer in 1 day, no problem. I did that on the 990 and I was tired of riding, before I even arrived in Sweden :) For commute, i got a cheap 1981 Yamaha xv750 café racer. 😎 Best of both for me. My wife was not keen on doing long adv rides on the 990. Whichever way I tried, the big, Dakar racer that the 990S is, could never hold a candle compared to the 450's I was used to on dirt, and was uncomfortable when carrying 2 people and luggage. Better to take her camping with the car.

Hi there Pierre, thanks a lot for sharing. I definitely see the practicality with trailering your bike, and I agree that sitting on the bike for that long to reach places is tiring. For some reason I don’t feel like doing it that way, getting to a destination is a part of the adventure. Perhaps that’s something I’ll do in the future, but right now I want a bike that can do most things. I might be wrong thinking like this, but that’s how I feel right now. Thanks again for chiming in 🙂

Found your channel due to the T7 videos and still love the choice for me and what I'm doing with it! Agreed that the T7 is probably not best for the 2-up adventures....I'm thinking that AT might be your best choice, and I know they are quite capable off road until you get to the gnarly single track. Awesome that your wife wants to go!! Cheers, and ride safe!

I hear ya with all that road riding. That would get old on your 701. I wish you could hang out with me in Colorado. Colorado is 701/690 country. Ride for half and hour to amazing trails near my house, lots of high country stuff up over 12,000 feet just an hour or so away. I also ride a 300 XC, which I truck to the riding areas. For your use profile an Africa Twin or perhaps an 890 would likely be better. I have a 701 also. My biggest challenge is behaving on the street with the traction control turned off. I like doing wheelies and the 701 makes big long ones all too easy 😆

I have a Africa Twin and it's a great adventure bike and it's a great road bike, and it's a great off road bike it also has plenty of room for gear and a passenger, and it's quite comfortable for long trips, but it's heavy. The Africa Twin is more than capable of handling many types of off road scenarios, but it's heavy. So I bought a KTM 690 enduro r and it is the most capable dual sport motorcycle I have ever ridden, but for long road trips it's not so great, but I didn't buy it for long road trips that's what the Africa Twin is for. I live it the USA in Oregon and unlike were you live I don't have to travel as far to find areas to ride off road. With that said I understand your situation, although it would be nice if you could keep your 701 and have a bigger adventure bike. Since owning the 690 I find myself riding it much more than my Africa Twin and have been contemplating selling my Africa Twin. I just haven't found that unicorn yet?

Hi, I’m a GS owner and thinking to change to a middle weight bike because my off road needs. Just a thought, KTM 890 has 105 HP, more then Africa twin and lighter too,so maybe is a better option and is a mistake put it in the same basket of T7. Good luck.

Hi Marco, that’s a great suggestion. Even though I’ve ruled out the middleweight bikes, I am going to test ride a few just to be sure. The 890r is a beast of a bike!

Hi Johannes I can totally understand your thoughts. Maybe you can wait until next season to buy a new bike. There are rumors about smaller adventure bikes because this is what most people want. There should be a new transalp coming soon or a smaller version of the Africa twin. Also KTM is considering to make a new superduke adventure (maybe 750, 900 or 990). Time will tell… I will keep my T7. - Yes it is top heavy and it is not the most comfortable for a pillion but if you ride 99% on tarmac, then it is a great bike. Also if there is a nice offroad section you can do it with the stock T7 as long as it is not too technical. In the end it is your channel and your decision what you are doing. I will keep watching because of your personality and your great reviews about gear and stuff 😎 Ride safe 🙌

I really know and feel your dilemma. Not sure if some of my thoughts/experiences can be helpful TLDR: I really recommend you to look at the Norden 901. It offers great comfort, especially to a pillion, on the road. With its low weight it is about as offroad capable as it still gets while offering that level of comfort. Other alternatives could be Africa Twin (non AS), Tiger 900 You really seem to enjoy challenging offroad riding like TET trails etc. This can be done on big Adventure bikes ... but I really doubt you will be happy I currently ride a Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, it is an awesome bike ... looks great ... but with some annoying minor flaws ... but the biggest problem is ... I simply wont do any really challenging offroad riding, because if something happens, I am totally screwed and because of that I currently am not doing what I really enjoy ... Big ADV Bikes (KTM 1290, Africa Twin AS, Tiger 1200, 1250 GS) are unreasonably offroad capable, way more capable than all but the best riders. All the technology and engineering really helps and lets you do stuff that should not be possible. But when it gets tricky, the margin for error gets small very quickly, same goes for the point of no return. And all the stuff cannot make the 250-270kg disappear. Especially when it lies in a ditch or stuck. It is much harder to get out than a 205kg or 170kg bike.
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for chiming in Mathias. You raise several good points here. The 901 is a great bike no doubt, but would have liked if it had been on the marked for a few years before I possibly buy it. Regarding the big adv bikes being capable offroad you are absolutely right, but as you say they can be a handful. I was initially set on a big bike, but the more I think and reflect over how I like to ride (technical, and as much offroad as possible), I’m not as sure anymore, if that’s something I want to give up. We will see what bike I end up with, time will tell 🙂

@@JohannesDalenMC This spring I tried to decide between the Tiger 900 and 901... before I fell into the feature trap of the Tiger 1200 After my Tiger 1200 "early adopter experience" over the last 3 months and 11k with firmware upgrades, missing parts, no 3rd party parts yet, etc. ... no long term reviews ... the vibrations😠... I really understand your point ... TBH the 890, aehm I mean 901, parts are not that new ;) The 901 is awesome ... balances to a stand still see @OFFroad-OFFcourse ... however I struck it off my list because - crappy wind protection, 901 touring shield vanished after less than a week from the catalog - "1>2 false neutral" ... i had the gear drop into N multiple times during 2 test rides - buttons fell cheap/unpolished for this price ... especially compared to the Tiger 900 - parts availability ... very questionable ... Since then I had the pleasure to experience the 901 over 4 offroad training days in Germany. Awesome .. a bit aggressive. However - some parts break/damage easily > crash bars? - false neutral really sucks offroad when you constantly need to check if the gear is in .. KTM: known issue, just hold it in Many of my issues may be improved by season 2023 .. either by Husky or 3rd party ... and learn to live with the rest ... After my experience, I would also wait a bit more and see where it goies .. I might look at the 901 (or similar ... Africa Twin 750, Ténéré 900 ... one can dream :D ) again ... while it is not perfect ... it really strikes unique balance between offroad and comfort ...

I’m in a similar place. 701 is the modern DR650 and is the true dual sport. Great for twisties to easy single track. The mid-sized adv bikes like T7 and KLR, are just not light enough to justify. Big bikes I’ve rented the GS, KTM super adv, for big rides and frankly they do dirt roads but single track no way without expert skills. In other words, if you go big, like I am also thinking, you do give up technical trails rides because in my opinion, the skills to do that riding are on another level. If I do a GS, I am keeping my DR650
@lo76er822 жыл бұрын
I respect your personal trajectory as you try to find the best compromise motorcycle for your needs but keep in mind: - there is no unicorn -it’s all about trade offs -your wife may only like the idea of exploring on a motorcycle, not the reality of it… I don’t think you should aim straight for such big bike, the 890/901 platform is plenty strong for two up and still decent off road. Anyways, success on your search!
