I just got back from a ride to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean with my 701. 6,000 miles and 4 weeks. I used the RG aux tank and never had an issue between stations. My reserve light comes on at 220 miles and I’m empty at 240. The long days on the highway were troublesome as I hit lots of rain making my visibility terrible. I’m thinking of a Britannia Lynx fairing so I could crack open my visor. I’ll have an updated video out soon on my progress.

I've got a highly modified 701 I've been riding in the US PNW for a couple years now, including some BDRs. I've got the Mosko Rackless80 for my luggage. Love that setup, highly recommend.

This is a great take on the 701. I had both T7 and 690 for a short while and in the end kept the T7. If I had more offroad riding possibilities around my house I would have kept the 690 but for me it was just not enjoyable enough on the road in the end. But the 690 offroad is really another world, for me it basically felt like less than half the weight of a T7 and you can lift it 10 times if needed.

Thank you! Interesting that you talk about offroad riding possibilities around your house. The truth is that's exactly the same where I live. It feels strange riding a bike this dirt oriented with mx tires when 95% of my daily riding is commuting to work or running errands. A more street oriented adventure bike would suit my situation much better, but I know that I would regret that decision if I went back to a 200kg bike when I had so much troubles with one a year ago. As stated I can live with the 701s street performance, it's not great, but doable. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting!

Hi from Argentina! I have recently acquired a 701 with various modifications, including auxiliary tank! Next september I am going on a 4000 km trip to the Puna /Atacama desert areas of Argentina and chile, were fuel is always an issue! I have done this trip before on a KTM 1090, but as I am now 65 years old, I was looking for a bike that was more “age friendly” and the Husky is perfect! Can't believe you don't talk about the break down and how the dealer dealt with it! That is so much part of what a motorcycle is, the network, the warranty and how the dealer accepts problems or not under warranty. To me, that is why Honda, Toyota, Yamaha, etc., are so unbelievably successful, both with cars and bikes. Building reliability into the product and that is what KTM/HUSKY have struggled with in a lot too many cases. I love the 701, but I wish it was japanese!. I hope you can prove me wrong by saying that the dealer included the work under warranty and that it was not an issue. If he did not, you ought to have said it right here!

Another interesting review Johannes, and yes there is no perfect motorcycle that will do it all but I still think you made a good choice, the 701 is a good compromise. Sadly in this modern day off road or even dirt roads are becoming rarer and harder to find so more road miles are needed, so that highway comfort becomes more important, for some anyway, at the expense of off road ability . When it comes to reliability, if you drop on the high side of A$20000 on a bike it should be bloody reliable, if A$10000 buys me a DR 650 that gets over 200,000 klms without an issue twice the price should be better, yes ?😂😂😂😂😂😂

Always good to hear from you Bill! You definitely got a point, and here in Norway we are ruthless slabbing tarmac everywhere, and the dirt roads that we do have are private or forbidden. I do absolutely agree with you, this oil leak shouldn't have happened, but it did and my approach is pragmatic and without emotion. Things happen, and when they do I fix them and move on. More to be said about this in the video about it - but I'm not sure if I dare to touch on the topic of reliability because that seem to bring out a lot of feelings in people!

Ah that’s a bummer, but the saying «Good things come to those who wait» is very accurate in your situation 🙂 It’s just the stock tail, it’s possible to just remove the lowest part by a few bolts. Probably not at a legal angle, but I plan on using a heat gun and just bending that piece of plastic.

I’ve seen a few of your videos addressing the jerky throttle on the husky 701. What was the setup you ended up with and did it allow you to tractor slowly over technical terrain? I’m looking into buying a 690 or 701, but I’m hesitant because I typically ride trails pretty slow.

I am selling my Triumph 900 Rally Pro and buying a 701 this year. Weight/off-road ability is what is prompting the change. I live in Washington State in the US and there are just too many off pavement options in our mountains for me to be riding what is essentially a street bike. I plan to use a Rade garage tower. I also would like to get the aux fuel tank. I believe Husky has a two year warranty. I am wondering if changing out the air box to accommodate the auxiliary tank would void the warranty on a new bike?

On another note, since you're in the motorcycle business, by the looks of it Husqvarna is really doing a good job in Australia. Arranging a lot of rides that they publish on KZbin, lent MADTV a few 701s for testing and so on. I don't understand why manufacturers are more like that (could be, but I haven't noticed much, at least not here in Norway..)

@@JohannesDalenMC The 701 LR has only been discontinued as a factory model. They did sell like hot cakes in Oz, but not as much in the rest of the world. What Husky has done, is now they sell it as an aftermarket kit. So you still get the same set up as the LR, but it's added on later. It's $3k AUS for the kit. Comes with the seat, and everything. I have the 2020 LR, and I've been across OZ and though the middle, and never needed to carry fuel.

Great review. Agree with everything. 10 hours highway is a lot on a 701. You may find it more comfortable with an ADV helmet with small peak rather than MX helmet with huge peak. Cheers

I actually had that in my notes - I was going to point out that riding with a mx helmet and goggles isn't great for highway riding on any bike. I have a Scorpion ADV helmet with a small peak and that is much better. Cheers mate!

Then we have the exact same experience. I could of course have bought the Suomy MX helmet with the visor, that would have helped, but any helmet with a peak will be pretty bad. It beeing a tet/offroad bike i find that the absolute most important. I hate highways on every single bike. I’ve just done a full day on my dads 1290 adventure s and I found wind protection to be shit aswel. I’m also a tall rider like you and I find that alot of times my visor comes right in the wind buffering zone of the windscreen. Even if it’s a bike that people describe as “a magic carpet on the highway”. Same story on the tenere for me. Only superbikes work to stay out of the wind if I tuck behind the screen. That’s why I went for the 701 because I will have heavy wind on any bike on the highway and I rather have it on my chest than in the face.

No windscreen will ever prevent sidewinds from buffeting you. Having just fitted the Radegarage tank, I’ll be interested to hear your comments. It wasn’t as easy to fit as is often made out, but I used the rear cap syphon method.

@@JohannesDalenMC I only finished the installation this week and am about to test it, will let you know. I used the supplied pink tube for the fuel vapour emissions but as I am syphoning from the rear filler cap I bought some 50 psi 3/16” ID fuel hose instead of using the supplied inferior fuel hose. It was difficult to remove the air box and because I wanted to retain the seat supports I had to trim them to fit the new tank. I also fitted a quick release fuel coupling between the 2 tanks to make it easy to remove the front tank. I’m about to make a KZbin video of my installation

Thank you, appreciate the kind words! Which bike did you replace the T7 with? I’m currently a bit over 100kg, without gear, so perhaps 110 with full kit? I haven’t weighed my equipment, but the OM racks are 5kg, bags 2,5kg, and then eveerything I brought which I have no clue how much weighs.

Thanks for the info! So about 10kgs for the bags/rack and maybe another 10 -15 for the contents I imagine. I actually haven’t purchased another bike yet but have put a deposit down for a CRF300L (non Rally). I figure I can easily get it down to 300lbs wet, and with some money on suspension and exhaust+ECU flash it’ll be close enough to what I need. There’s not much else in the category… waiting on Yamaha to put out a new dual sport or KTM a 390 Rally. BTW a close friend is moving to Norway soon, can’t wait to visit, your country looks amazing👍🏼

Not that I know of, but with the original 8 ltr tank I should get about 225-240 kms and I’ll just throw a Rotopax on the rear rack for longer trips. I mostly do 3-6 hrs rides, not multi day stuff;) 690/701 has been on my radar for a while, did a test drive and really enjoyed it, expensive though, and still requires mods… Cheers from Montreal Canada!

I have a T7 now and the 701 would be the only other bike I consider. I had a 2017 701sm and it was full of issues which almost every trip either started or ended at the dealer for warranty work. T7, 9000 MILES OF OFF ROAD AND ZERO TRIPS TO THE DEALER!

Some could be put down to the dealer being rubbish but I think that's half the problem with ktm, their dealers are so sales driven the aftercare is generally nothing they are interested in. Still love the 701/690 platform. Keen tknsee how you get on with it.

Yikes that’s quite the list. The 690/701 platform is unique, only other bike in the same category is the PR7. I sold mine and now ride a T7 too, found it too uncomfortable on the toad with all the road miles I have to cover here in Norway..

I like the way you do reviews. It's very honest. I was on a KTM350 exec-F, and it was great off road, but the front end wobbled at highway speeds. Do you get any wobble in the steering, or is it pretty stable?

Thank you Larry, I appreciate the kind words! The 701 is pretty stable up to 120kph. At those speeds it’s the wind that makes it uncomfortable rather than any wobbling, but there is a slight wobble beyond that. When you have knobby tires on a dual sport, that’s inevitable I guess.

Very precise yet enthusiastic video. One question I always have about this bike it's the too much large first gear's ratio for comfortable single track or hill climb riding. So I wonder if there is some kit in the market to shorten the first (and second?) gears while keeping the rest of gear ratios. Yes, another alternative would be to enlarge the fifth and sixth gears ratios, then to put a smaller front sprocket or larger rear sprocket, so the max speed remains pretty the same while gaining a more appropriate lower gears ratios for the more "technical" off-road conditions. I don't like to simply switch sprockets because it modifies all the gears ratios, hence one loses max / cruise speed and fuel economy on the tarmac. In a so off-road oriented and well prepared bike, the gearbox should be truly WR, with a "rescue short" first gear (most like a trial bike) and a "overdrive" sixth speed, but it seems that in the Husky 701 (and in all KTMs and Husqvarnas for the case) all the gears are overdrive for the respective driving conditions.

Thank you! Yes the gearbox is not the best when it comes to gear spacing. First is too high and sixth is too low. Seems like KTM didn’t modify the gearbox when they adpoted it from the street version and I’ve read many complaints about it. I personally didn’t find it to be a huge issue, but I don’t have much single track where I live. I know Lyndon Poskitt sells a Nova gearbox on his website that fixes this, but it is very expensive.

Hi! Yes that's a good suggestion, the tower adds some turbulent wind for sure, but I'm not sure if I want to take it off. I like it for many things. In the front I used the TKC80s that came with the bike, they had some life left and since I knew this route well I didn't put a more aggressive front on. I have a few pairs of Metzeler MC360s at home that I'm putting on next. On the back I used the Mitas E09 Dakar which I am very impressed by. After 3000km it still looks new and it did great both on and off road. Thanks for watching my friend!

Hi. Could I have a small question for you? What exactly do you mean by highway speeds? Wind protection aside (I'll consider it later), can the engine comfortably maintain 140-150km/h? I've test ridden the Tuareg and electronic throttle aside, it fits me pretty much perfectly and I am almost convinced to pursue that model as soon as I can, but... an idea came to my mind that my similarly-weighted Transalp 600 can sometimes be a pain in the butt to pick up if it lands the wrong way, with 25kg of luggage, so maybe something smaller? Right now, I mainly ride the Transalp in the city and on the offroads around it, so the road use would be once-twice a year riding 1000-1500km to the offroads and the same distance back, so maybe I can suffer through it for these few days. But it has to be able to do my preferred road speed (at least 140) since the Transalp's 100-110 gets pretty annoying. Best case scenario, it could be a replacement for both my ADV Transalp and enduro DR350. I don't have Husky/KTM test bikes in my city, so that's why I'm asking if I should even try to get one for a spin or if it's a waste of time. Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hello there! The engine isolated is strong enough to keep these speeds. Yes, it will be buzzy being a single, but it's a crazy strong engine that can be used for pretty much anything. But, that is the engine isolated. The bike as a whole will not be a comfortable place to sit at those speeds. Imagine riding your DR350 at those speeds, it will be a similar experience. Lack of wind protection, a very steep rake on the fork compared to ADV bikes, lightweight which will make the bike prone to being moved around by crosswinds. I bought this bike thinking it could be my do it all- machine, but I sold it a month ago because I was simply covering too much tarmac miles to be on a dual sport. I bought another T7 (similar to Tuareg 660 and your Transalp). There are people out there using dual sports like a 500 or 690/701 as their long distance motorcycle, but that was not for me. It just isn't comfortable enough and you'll end up not going on trips because you don't want to endure the discomfort from sitting on a dual sport for that long at those speeds. In my honest opinion, shy away from the thumpers for your kind of use, unless you live in a place where there's offroad trails everywhere and 90% of your riding is offroad. You need a twin cylinder motorcycle that weighs what todays adventure bikes weigh to stay comfortable. The Tuareg 660 seems like an excellent bike, I haven't ridden one myself, but I will when I get the chance. Hope this was helpful!

@@JohannesDalenMC Wow, thank you for an awesome reply :D You're probably right and these were my exact thoughts even without sitting on one of these machines, but if you say the engine is capable enough, I'd at least like to try taking he bike for a spin and see how terrible is it. I still have hopes that it will annoy me just below my threshold. ;) But I guess I'd have to ride it for more than 1h test to truly see the picture. The wind on my upper body shouldn't be a problem since I'm perfectly fine with riding my sportbike 200+ with the wind hitting the middle of my ribcage. I even cut the Transalp's windscreen as short as possible ;) I'm not sure about the legs though. There are various rally kits for the husky, even bigger than your screen, so I think there's a solution somewhere out there. Everything else, I hope I can endure for 2 days of riding to the trails (and another 2 back), to have more fun on them... Anyway, your reply was very helpful. It took away my hype since I have a second (except my own) opinion that there's an 85% chance that bike is not what I'm looking for, but on the other hand, you convinced me to definitely try to find a test ride, just to know the options better. Maybe, instead of buying a lighter bike, I should buy a gym membership XD

Hi Rob, thanks for the kind words! The Brodit holder uses regular AMPS hole pattern, and the bracket that I’m using came with the Rade Garage tower when I bought it. Stock ones, I had the doubletake and you are right, they vibrate less, but they were also a bit short in the stem so I was looking at my shoulders.

Hehe well, in short I needed the money. We are fixing the bathroom in the house. Also, the DRZ didn’t see much riding, the 701 is just a better bike in every way. Was paying insurance for a bike that was just sitting there..

​@@JohannesDalenMC 1. It is lighter. 2. Cheaper if it breaks. 3. It consume les so you could go farther. 4. 100 km/h is enough for TET. 5. Pobably more reliable. I think that 701 is a great motorcycle but not as versatile as Honda CRF 300 L (with proper suspension).

@@fcalin21 its only a few kg lighter. With a few mods(exhaust, li-ion battery)it will be lighter than the CRF. The 701 has much better suspension and a lot more power. So the 701 wins.

I don't quite understand - you purposely get a bike with no wind protection... and then mention 'lack of wind/buffeting protection' as a downside? Thats like getting a sport bike and complaining about it's abysmal offroad performance.

Hi there! What do you mean by «purposely» bought a bike with no protection? I mean, I bought a bike that I thought would be as good for offroad riding as possible, while still being able to be somewhat comforable on the road in terms of wind protection and general comfort. Through trying and experiencing I’ve found it wasn’t comfortable enough.
