From Albums to the Vault: How Fans Drive The Elvis Market
(NOTE: We do not endorse bootleg releases - this discussion is for educational or reference purposes only. Also, this is not intended as a precise timeline of releases, but to demonstrate the general idea of how fan demand shaped what gets released.)
The FTD releasing sessions and Sony Legacy releasing entire sets of live recordings, newer fans might wonder how we got here. In this episode, Jamie and John take a general overview of how we went from the 70s until today, and how fans and their love for Elvis have driven the direction of Elvis releases for over 50 years - and how that trend continues today!

Hi , Are You Lonesome Tonight from "A Legendary Performer Vol 1" (1974) was an outtake from the 68' T.V Special the laughing version from Vegas 1969 was featured on "A legendary Performer Vol 4," (1983) and originally made its official debut on the "Elvis Aron Presley" box in 1980. The Fort Baxter/Bilko releases were excellent for the time thanks for the video look forward to the next.

You can read the bootlegger article non elvisinfonet. I remember my local record store would sell the bootlegs and later I purchased the Silver box vinyl and the gold box. Was overjoyed when these came out. Europe started releasing heaps of boots in the 90s. Thanks for the memories.

This is fascinating, I have always wondered how all these out-takes and extra songs got into circulation. And the fans must have had some serious money available, to pay record companies to make records and covers of unauthorised soundtracks, when the companies were themselves breaking copyright laws.

Yeah, it's really a fascinating process; usually from someone who knows someone with access to the tapes, etc (as opposed to the label, itself), "safety copies" being made, etc. Wild stuff!

Thank you Jamie and John your videos are terrific and this one brought back memories of the 1990s and some of the classic Bootlegs we used to buy from labels such as the King Of Bootlegs Fort Baxter Bilko Madison and Vicky love you guys to do a little history on those labels. We only ever bought sound boards no recorded from the audience for us and rare outtakes from movie and regular sessions how the hell did these rare takes escape from the RCA vaults ? There is a particular Fort Baxter release of Theres Always Me maybe part of number 2 and part of 3 that has some tracks from the From Elvis In Memphis sessions that I don’t think will ever be released on FTD or The Legacy series because of the language but it is totally fascinating stuff and really shows just how much fun Elvis Had with the other musicians at times and how much they loved working with him . The days of bootlegs are pretty much gone but still see a few record albums and DVDs newly produced pop up .But these days am loving the FTDs and the Legacy series the sound is incredible thank you guys for bringing back the memories cheers Carl

the main person /fan responsible for getting FTD rollin was GER RIJFF who was responsible for both BILKO and BAXTER and these were the very 1st to feature soundboards as did the cd Man in White - uk Magazine was the main source for adverts of Fortbaxter and the 1st soundboard Just Pretend over a few releases BMG @ the time took note of the sales as did EPE who shutt Rijff and Willem Kauw down and fined them back in 1998 iir - the footage up close 8mm from pittsburgh 76 was filmed/owned by John Herman -a cop n friend of EP and same guy who had a cassette recording of the show and the one that Paul dowling used and put on Bootleg Vinyl -

Some absolutely great info there! We generally don't name too many names for legal reasons (and for new fans, we don't focus too much on bootlegs) but you're right - and man, do those names take me back! @@EAPSociety The 90’s was a great time for such awesome resources and great releases. I, personally, wouldn’t want to name names either, but the constant issues at retail, such as, “Elvis On Tour” debacle is just unacceptable. I’m sure you God know exactly what I’m referring too.

@@FrankieLovesElvis Definitely, on all counts! If we could somehow combine the 90's in general with the FTD sessions releases we have now, I'd be extremely happy! Great video. We are so lucky to have FTD and the main label providing us such great releases. Could another reason FTD was approved by Sony due to the 50 year copyright rule? Not that it’s an issue because we are getting a steady stream of great quality releases but as a business protecting their copyright in countries where it would have expired, stopping legal bootlegs ?
@EAPSociety
@EAPSociety 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As for the 50 year rule, I doubt it - several FTD releases came after that material expired under the rule, so FTD was mainly a response to / competition for the bootleg market. But they've certainly used FTD to get some material out before the 50 year rule - so even if the label wasn't created for that, certain individual releases seem to have been.

BUT….. it goes even further back than that. When the film Flaming star came out in the cinemas, some fans took their tape recorders in to record the two songs that weren’t released on record. There was even an article about this in one of the British music mags telling fans they are not allowed to do this as it is against the law!!!

That being said have to agree with you all of these new relases and the awful reverb. on things like Live 1969 and way Down i really don't like the way it sounds . also it looks like the new EOT box will have the same awful reverb on it aswell. Whom ever is mixing these sets really needs to stop with the reverb it just doesn't sound good! just my personal opinion T.C.B Elvis forever .

Hi, Don! Thank you so much, and welcome! I don't mind the new mixes so much, as long as - at some point - we get the material in more classic mixes. At the very least, that should be happening with the 76 sessions and already did with a few of the 1969 shows, but here's hoping for the rest, too.

That’s what was available at that time, 2012, so a lot of us were ecstatic when we first got it. In today’s world, the technology has gotten so much better and I think that release is still worthwhile. 10th row fan footage from a “collector” With synchronized video and audio is still exceptionally impressive. Don’t forget the guy had to constantly change the tape to keep recording.

Very true, Francesco, at least from that one collector - though even at the time, enough video from differences sources existed to cover most of the show. Much like anything else, multiple sources of Elvis footage gets expensive, but here's hoping Sony finds was to do more of that over time.
