"From Awareness to Action: The Path Toward Meaningful Allyship”, a talk by Dr. Evelyn Carter (Research Scientist, BruinX) was held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. in the UCLA CNSI Auditorium.
Have you found yourself in a situation where you have been aware of a social injustice in society? Do you wish to spur change against the inequity in society? Have you wanted to be equipped with skills to face the challenges of being an ally?
Dr. Evelyn Carter presented a lecture, "From Awareness to Action: The Path Toward Meaningful Allyship" discussing ways to engage in meaningful allyship, what research tells us about being an ally, and the challenges that might arise along the way.
Dr. Evelyn Carter is a social psychologist currently working as a Research Scientist in the UCLA Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. She holds a B.A. from Northwestern University, an M.A. from University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Her research on how people detect and discuss cues to racial bias has been published in peer-reviewed journals and funded by the National Science Foundation. Her current job harnesses her passion for using evidence-based methods to create and sustain inclusive climates within universities and organizations; to this end, she has led collaborative research teams at 7 different institutions. Evelyn is also a dynamic speaker and has presented nationally and internationally on topics related to her own research and how social science research can inform responses to and understanding of relevant issues of the day.
