Very good video . I got a taste of clinical research at the beginning of COVID with a pharmacology company that was testing the COVID vaccine. The contract was only for 3 months. I'd like to do it again

May I ask how to apply as a Clinical Trial Nurse in US? I just passed my NCLEX RN this January and really want to pursue my dream to become a research nurse in US. I had my hospital bedside experience many years ago in my country, plus clinical trial research job and other roles in nursing. Great video. I was wondering if you could give me your advice to help me out. I'm considering going into the world of clinical research and am trying to see how to best approach it so I have 2 different scenarios/questions for you. Background on me is I have a BA in Psychology and have done multiple years of volunteer work at major hospitals in California along with hospice and homeless shelter volunteer work. This post is going to be a bit long! 1. If I were to go for an accelerated nursing program (ABSN) and graduate, would I be able to apply to a clinical research nurse (CRN) position right after graduating? I'm not so much interested in bedside nursing but rather in clinical research, so is this doable? If not, what would I need as a minimum in bedside nursing before applying? at least 1 year? I spoke with a senior CRA who said that this is feasible since you don't really need clinical skills to be a Clinical Research Nurse but it's nuanced she said. That means right after graduating I don't have to do any bedside nursing. This is kind of the opposite of what you're saying so I'm wondering. I'm trying to forgo bedside nursing and go from CRN----CRA---Senior CRA (or other higher-paying positions in clinical research). 2. The second scenario this person was proposing to me was to forgo going back to school considering my age and pre-existing debt, to apply to a CRC position now and highlight my BA in psychology along with my years of volunteer work. She said I should do that work as a CRC for 3 years and then I should be eligible to apply for a CRA position with a nice pay increase. Then work my way up to a senior CRA or manager of some sort. This would help bypass 50-60k for the ABSN program as well as 16 months of not getting paid while in school. What are your thoughts on this route vs number 1 listed above, how realistic/feasible is this. ***FYI*** All of these scenarios are assuming I stay in CA since it's one of the few places where you can command a higher salary for these specific positions, or else I'd see a pay drop she mentioned. Do you recommend going directly to research nursing as a new grad? I have a 2nd round of interviews for a research nurse, nurse residency program next week! I lovveeeee the research side but im worried I won’t learn skills that would also help me become a well rounded nurse if I ever want to go to bedside.

I understand your concerns. I recommend doing a hospital placement for your consolidation/internship/residency term in your final year, even if you have the option for a research or community placement. Those skills will keep your doors open. As for your full time job after grad, there is no harm in jumping right in with a full time Clinical Research Nurse role. It has great work life balance and excellent growth opportunities. If you want to keep your clinical skills sharp, you can do casual shifts as an RN on evenings/weekends/holidays. There is a huge nursing shortage in LTC, etc so there will also be opportunities to go back and gain clinical skills.

How do you know if clinical trial nursing is for you? I graduated with my nursing degree in May and I've always been intrigued by clinical research but have only worked in a hospital setting. I've been at the same hospital for 10 years and I've been working there as a nurse since I graduated and I'm kinda scared to leave but I've always wondered about clinical research and watch your videos all the time. I've been offered a position outside of the hospital as a clinical research nurse for phase 1 clinical trials at a very well-known CRO (pharma). It's more money, they offer a flexible schedule, and unlimited time off. I guess I'm just scared of switching organizations and losing seniority at my current employer. How much opportunity is there for growth in clinical research for a nurse?

Hi Eli, those are very valid concerns to have. I would say that clinical research has an appeal to nurses who don't see themselves as bedside nurses due to work-load, long hours, weekend schedule, and the physical intensity of the work. On the other hand, shift nurses can leave the work behind once the shift ends but in CRO and Pharma roles it can often drag on into your evenings and weekends. The workload can be crazy, although it is more desk work but I know of people who have to juggle up to 14 different projects. The money can be better in CRO/Pharma but they often dont have index pensions which hospitals offer nurses. So these are all good to consider.

Hello, it depends on lots of factors such as years of experience and the type of organization you are working at. In Canada, it would be anywhere from 60-90k/year on average.
