Most broom handles will have some runout, so you may have to chase a growth ring like I did here. If you find a perfect one with straight fibers across the back you won’t have to. That’s why I keep so many knives handy, helps keep the edges fresher. If I do anything hard on the edge I use a certain knife to save the others from the abuse

I am planning on using shovel handles as a start to practice as they are cheap and readly available before going to staves, that are hard to find or very expensive here in Portugal. :) Really nice video. Thank you very much.

The issue I had was losing a lot of thickness after chasing a ring. There wasn’t too much stave left after that. If you can find a perfect broom that’s a big head start

Excellent video dan! Have you considered making a video on types of bow breaks, what their causes are?

I’m editing that video now! How to break a bow 2: How not to…or something like that. Should be out on saturday or sunday

@@DanSantanaBows Wow what are the chances! If you know who i am, im the one you commented on reddit, the ash full compass english warbow, you said it was stiff in the handle, and im working on it currently. Wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t cause you go through so many bows on the subreddit. There is a short of a bow on my channel before the one i posted on the subreddit that smashed halfway on the top limb. Thanks so much for your help!

Dan, beautiful work my friend.. what was the broom stick made of maple ?
@DanSantanaBows2 жыл бұрын
That’s what I think but I’m not sure. It was tricky getting a ring chased but this piece really needed it

Dan, yesterday I asked a clarifying question on the chisels holder I saw in one of your other videos. The question has been answered by watching this video, so no need to answer there, thanks. However, a new question arises - why does your ample sized workbench move and flex so much? Is it the lack of diagonal supports (top to bottom etc) between the legs? Thanks

Is it an oak? Or what?)))

probably maple but not 100% sure. More info in the description

Who would have thought a broom handle would turn out to be such a handsome bow? Nice!
@DanSantanaBows2 жыл бұрын
Tool handles are a great source of wood if you can’t find anything else. A few issues ago in primitive archer magazine there’s even a build along for a bow from a pair of axe handles
