The tunnel bus reminds me of the fact that you can go all the way to San Ysidro in San Diego on the US-Mexico border on the San Diego Trolley, which makes it possible to get to Tijuana by just light-rail and walking. This also reminds me of how El Paso once had an international trolley system! Historically, the cities of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez relied on a unified streetcar system across the Rio Grande which initially consisted of horse and mule-drawn trolleys and were replaced by the first electrified street cars in 1902. In the 1920s, the streetcar system was made up of 52 miles (or 83 km), with over two million using the service! However, the increasing availability of cars led them to abandon most of its streetcar infrastructure in the 1940s, with the exception of the international line, which was renewed with 20 PCC streetcars from San Diego in 1950. In May 1974, the last remaining cars in use made their final trips. They were taken to a desert area by the airport, where they eventually rusted and decayed. A new El Paso streetcar system was built in 2018. In a different timeline, Canada’s southernmost point could’ve been….in the Caribbean! The Bahamas, the former West Indies Federation, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica, and Belize have considered it! In Jamaica, during an 1882 political crisis, one of the proposed solutions was joining Canada. Michael Solomon led the pro-Confederation faction, but when he introduced a motion to that effect in the Legislative Council, everyone except Michael voted against it! The Bahamas seriously negotiated with the Canadian government in 1911, but after a migration of African-Americans fleeing Oklahoma that made the government panic and hateful, the Canadians turned against it. During the time of the West Indies Federation (a short-lived union from 1958 to 1962 of all the Caribbean islands that were British), during a parliamentary conference held in Ottawa while discussing that the islands couldn’t reach a clear consensus on the exact style of federal union, it was noted though that British Honduras (now Belize, which held observer status in the West Indies Federation) showed more interest in a union with Canada than with the other British Caribbean colonies. The Federation maintained a particularly close relationship with Canada. In the early years, several Caribbean leaders suggested that the West Indies Federation should investigate the possibility of becoming a Canadian province. In the Turks and Caicos Islands, support for a "special relationship" with Canada was at 90 percent in the 1990s, and in 2003, support was at around 60 percent. In 1917, PM Robert Borden first suggested for Canada to annex the islands. In 1974, MP Max Saltsman introduced a failed attempt at consolidating the islands. The idea was brought up again in 1986 by MP Dan McKenzie, but it was rejected by his party's caucus committee on external affairs in 1987. The committee, chaired by David Daubney, looked at immigration, banking, healthcare, and tourism issues in making its decision. In 2004, MP Peter Goldring visited Turks and Caicos to explore the possibility once more. He drafted a motion asking the Canadian government to look into the issue, but his party declined. That year, Nova Scotia voted to invite Turks and Caicos to join the province if the islands ever became part of Canada, which would bypass the problems with admitting them as a separate province. In May 2014, Turks and Caicos Premier Rufus Ewing ended up visiting Ottawa to look to improve its relationship and was open to a possible "marriage" in the future. Goldring championed the cause of integrating the islands as a Canadian territory for security benefits as well as increasing Canada's influence in Central and South America with regard to counterterrorism and trade.

The context which will aid understanding of Leamington/Kingsville and the surrounding area is the TFW program. Those farms are staffed with migrant workers who are historically paid and treated quite poorly. This is also why non-car owners (who by-and-large aren't citizens and therefore can't vote) aren't properly served by transit or cycling infrastructure. The bus routes are serving rec centres at colleges (college kids who are canadians), despite the actual users of that route's service potentially being completely different. It's also why you saw such incredible Mexican food options there. You used to be able to go from Buffalo to Detroit via Canada by train, it was called the Canada Southern Railway, and it was a subsidiary of the New York Central, later Conrail, until the 2000s when it got sold to CN and CP, who only wanted it for the tunnel in Windsor and bridge in Niagara Falls, the line was ripped up accept for the stub between Windsor and St Thomas Ontario, until even that was ripped up in 2009. It was a shame we lost that as it made Amtrak lose a direct line between Detroit and Buffalo, and it was the last line in Canada to use Wig Wag crossing signals... You tripped on the sidewalk because the sidewalk was mad at you for saying that diner in Sandusky wasn't a real diner! That was its payback! The Pelee in Pelee Island comes from the French word 'pelée' which means 'bald'. Pelee Island has been historically known for its winemaking industry, the island has been used for vineyards and winemaking since 1860, though local wine making died out in the early twentieth century and was restarted in the 1980s by the Pelee Island Winery. The island grows about 2,000 hectares of soybeans, about 400 hectares of wheat, 200 hectares of grapes, and a few hectares of specialty corn. As mentioned, Sandusky is known for the Cedar Point amusement park. Before it was known for the amusement park, Sandusky was a fishing community. Sandusky was a stop on the Underground Railroad, as some would travel across Lake Erie to reach freedom in Canada. Even though Ohio was a free state, they still didn't feel safe because of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, so they boarded boats in Sandusky to cross to Amherstburg in Ontario. Sandusky was the site of groundbreaking for the Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad (the second railroad built in Ohio) in 1835, which brought a lot of change as industrial areas developed near the railroad and goods were transported through the port. The coal docks located west of downtown still use a portion of the original MR&LE ROW. By 1846, Sandusky had two railroads and became a main focus for lake traffic. In the 1860s, Cedar Point had a battery for four field artillery pieces to guard a prison for Confederate prisoners on a nearby island. Louis Zistel, a German immigrant, built two boats to transport the prisoners. In 1870, he began to ferry locals to the Cedar Point peninsula, which opened as a public bathing beach. Because it got its start as a public bathing beach, Cedar Point is considered the second-oldest operating amusement park in the US behind Lake Compounce in Bristol, Connecticut. Representatives of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad purchased the peninsula for 256,000 (equivalent to well over 9 million dollars in 2023) in 1897 and formed the Cedar Point Pleasure Resort Company. The company appointed George A. Boeckling, a businessman from Indiana, as the park's new manager. Under his tenure, the peninsula was transformed from a picnic ground into a nationally recognized amusement park and resort destination. The resort thrived under Boeckling's leadership, which lasted through 1931. G.A. Boeckling Company continued to control operations at the amusement park for much of the 20th century. After Cedar Point acquired Valleyfair in Minnesota in 1978, Cedar Fair was formed in 1983, taking its name from the two parks, and went public in 1987. Under Cedar Fair's leadership, Cedar Point grew to become one of the largest amusement parks in the world, and the company increased its portfolio by acquiring other amusement properties throughout the US. But in July 2024, they merged with longtime rival Six Flags, with former Cedar Fair leadership in control of the company and keeping the Six Flags name. The transition resulted in Cedar Fair stakeholders becoming majority owners

I think there's only one "proper" store on the Island, and it's a co-op that it basically a convenience store that also sells hardware and a few other basic housewares in a "rustic" prefab aluminum building, as well as doubles as the Island's only gas station and post office. Interestingly there's also a full service LCBO (government owned liquor store) that's actually nicer inside. Despite being adjacent to the most populated parts of Canada Pelee Island really is like a remote town in the far north in a lot of ways.

Miles has crossed the only way you can directly between Ontario and Ohio! The one state that technically borders Ontario that you can't directly reach from is Pennsylvania since there is no ferry service from the town of Erie to anywhere in Canada. Fun fact Ontario technically borders 5 U.S. States but does not have any land directly touching any of them. Ontario is separated by: The Rainy River, Pigeon River and a small section of Lake Superior for Minnesota. Lake Superior and St Marys River for the UP of Michigan. Lake Huron, St Clair River/Lake and Detroit River for the LP of Michigan. Lake Erie for Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. 'Provincial flag', not 'state flag'. And 'supercentre' is not pronounced 'supersentry', it's pronounced the same way you would pronounce 'supercenter' in the US. As a consequence of its British heritage in the English-speaking parts of the country, a lot of British spellings are used in Canada. Fun fact: In the French-speaking province of Quebec, 'supercentre' is spelled the same way as it is in Canadian English, and it means exactly the same thing, even though the pronunciation is different (in French, it would sound like supair-san-treh). This is because the words 'super' and 'centre' are both French words that are derived from Latin words, and made their way into southern England just after the Norman invasion of 1066. And 'Seacliffe' (as in 'Seacliffe Inn' in Leamington, Ontario) is not pronounced 'see-cliffy', it's just like 'seacliffe'. Again, this is another British spelling, although it's more often used for commercial names or even street and place names.

For non-Ontarians: they're so named because they were approved in the 1920s (under George V - they've always been "King's Highways", even under QEII). I think the shield and crown sigils are original. Those are provincially owned and maintained. City and county roads have rectangular or trapezoidal signage... Lower numbers are mostly rural two-lane routes (though a few have freeway sections like 7/8/85 in Kitchener-Waterloo). 4xx numbers are all controlled access freeways. Except the first one we built, which is the QEW (Queen Elizabeth as in George VI's wife), which doesn't have a number. (e.g., the spur leading to Niagara falls is the 420 highway; you'd think the signs would be stolen more often) The distances are in kilometres because we are a civilized country.

Not sure if this was explained by someone else but I might be able to give some context with SCT (Southwest Community Transit) and why they stop only at sport centres: When Doug Ford's government and the various counties in Southwestern Ontario wanted to build these micro transit systems, they thought that sport centres were perfect. Why? I'm not entirely sure, maybe because it's the only key point of interest within the city that isn't connected to a private business, or maybe it has to do with city owned parking lots. It's the same for Middlesex Connect. SCT really only service smaller rural cities and feed them into the bigger cities. The only downside, there's a transit dessert between London to Windsor, so if you need to get to Toronto via Leamington, you have no choice but to go to Windsor to get to Toronto. I hope as the years go on and the demand increases that the counties, cities and Ontario goverment will fix this. Also Theoretically, It's possible to get to London Ontario to Toronto only using SCT (From London to Kitchener/Brantfort) and GO Transit (From Kitchener or Brantford via Aldershot). It is something I wanna try but haven't gotten the time, might do it in November on vacation. If anyone wants info for the micro transits system in Southwestern Ontario. It can be found by searching "Ride SCT" or "Southwest Community Transit."

@@MilesinTransit London, uncharacteristically, has became a hub for buses. After the deregulation of coachlines in Ontario. There has been an explosion of innercity bus lines. With the SCT Umbrella, The drawback is that bus stops with these routes are scattered everywhere. Most only touching Western University and VIA/Citi Plaza in downtown, while some only random stop edge of the Mansonville neighborhood. One only stopping at Victoria Hospital, One at Fanshawe College. One at White Oaks Mall and another at Argyle Mall. My only issue is that London refused to build a central station (Even with the in progress built BRT system) and when they had a chance to buy the old Greyhound station, they didnt and let locally own private company take over it. Transit Talks Club did a fantastic job talking about the good and bad of Southwestern Ontario's innercity bus companies.

Traveling around outside of the US it's confusing going to metric distance, but it's actually because Americans tend to consider long drives in hours, not actual distance measurements. People in Europe will look at you funny when you say, "it's a 3 hour drive" unless it's a drive they've done often enough to know how long it usually takes. St clair college dropoff was the main entrance to st clair. A lot of the busses stop on each side of the st clair. That whole area of st clair is where everything happens. Its a huge campus since they made so much money when teachers went on strike for 4 months and then they started getting a ton of international students to come to their school because they pay literally 3.5x more money for the same program as domestic students.

Y'all gunna have to try the Jet Express to Kellys and Put-In-Bay at some point, definitely a bit more on the pricey side, but very good fun (and there's a good number of bars and restaurants on Put-in-Bay to spend a day at, well, at least in the summer months)

Peeps: meet someone who looks at you the same way Nathan looks at Miles eating a Pizza-Pizza Pizza Slice (19:37). ANYWAYS: My family drove from Dallas to Kitchener, ON via Chicago back in July to visit Niagara Falls/Toronto. On our way from Chicago to Kitchener, we took the Walpole-Algonac Ferry to cross the St. Clair into Canada. It's definitely meant more for cars than people, probably fit maybe 10 cars and we were squeezed on last. Ecstatic to have gotten on and even more so to be riding a ferry, even a short one across a river, to the place that's kind-of, sort-of, same-ish like home (19:07). First time I've seen so much water, it's a dry prairie down here in Texas. I'll admit, the Canadian border guards were harsher than I thought it were going to be-- as if no one would drive 1300 miles to visit Canada and choose a little podunk crossing to do it at (lol). We visited Niagara Falls and we're almost waved through by the U.S. border guards, and same again when we left via Sarnia back to Chicago. And without having this comment last ages, ditto on all the things closing early. Paris, ON had almost all their downtown businesses close at 5p on a WEDNESDAY. Found a Chinese restaurant, closed at 7p. Even their No Frills supermarkets closed at 9p. Didn't visit a Tim Horton's though-- but we did go to Pizza Pizza (that's a story), Canadian Costco, and overpaid for a McChicken at a Canadian McDonald's. Thank God for that exchange rate.

Lived in Cleveland most of my life and didn't know that there was a ferry that took you to Canada. Only knew about the ones that took you to Put-In-Bay and Kelly's Island

Interesting to see this in my feed. Not quite sure why the bus routes exist the way they do but there is a lot of international students in these further cities. There is also a lot of population from mexico and surrounding areas in lemington. I live in windsor, hope it was a good stay... we're definitely renown for our bus system... and how bad it performs. you probably were on one of the most empty busses that was recently added as a new route to our system here. Its nice it exists. I guess...

The new Gordie Howe bridge will have pedestrian and bike access from Windsor to Detroit. But, it is on the outskirts of both cities.
@withershin2 ай бұрын
Ish... under 10 km to "Downtown" Windsor and the scary-ass Ambassador Bridge is 3km from the Casinos. Walking over or taking a bike over the Ambassador Bridge is something no human should do ever. I can't imagine the Gordie is going to see much foot traffic even if it was downtown. (The tunnel is the best US/Canada crossing but take a taxi)
@A2forty2 ай бұрын
During the Detroit Marathon you run over the ambassador bridge and then come back in the tunnel. The tunnel is not great because it is very hot and stuffy.

I was just in Windsor in mid August for a weekend partly because of your previous video showing the tunnel bus service! I wanted to go see Leamington as well but unfortunately its just too far out of the way to get there and back in a single day on transit. Thanks for showing it for me and inspiring me to travel!
