I ran into some guys preaching on the street in downtown Los Angeles about 6 months ago. They were from this guy's church. They tried to get me to speak in tongues. I left and looked them up. Then I found a documentary on them. It's horrifying.

I was raised in a Pentecostal family and church. There were stories of dead people being raised from the dead, although only in Africa- never in the US. In the US we heard the stories though. It isn’t far off for a pastor to believe he has the gift of prophecy. Even my cousin became a pastor and held healing meetings. He says someone got their teeth filled by prayer! Later he came out as gay and left the church. He is happily married to Fred now. The beliefs Tony held were pretty typical of the religion until he veered off into extraterrestrial beings and such like. Children were beaten on a regular basis. I remember the hell and brimstone sermons and especially the pounding on the pulpit yelling that Jesus could return any time now. Maybe in a year, a month, a week, a day,… maybe NOW!!! As a child I was very angry that I would not get to grow up because the world was going to end. It is a destructive religion. If you are raised in it, it takes years or even a lifetime to get over the fears of hell. My cousin still has nightmares.

So sorry for your bad experiences in the Pentecostal church. I too was brought up in the Pentecostal church but my experience was and has been a positive one for the most part. I can understand why you can reject the whole thing if what you shared is all you experienced. But I've seen both sides. And was tought how to differentiate between the real and the fake. The flesh or the real Holy Ghost. One wise minister taught us three things will ruin any minister: Pride (which is fed by a sence of power or authority), Lust and money. This man Alamo had a problem with all three. What bothers me about the story was the lack of discernment and the fear of the people and the lack of a real Holy Ghost filled servant of God to expose the man for what he really was. Thank God I've seen the Lord expose a man living a double life. Sadly he didn't repent. Till the Lord sent a real prophet of God who prophesied the ministry would be burnt to the ground. Sounded far fetched. But a few years later I went home from bible school and looked for the place and found it had burnt to the ground.

I"m a Pentecostal minister, and am fully aware of the extremes in our movement. Tony Alamo was out of the mainstream, and I've known others who knew him. Alamo was a mixed bag, as his followers were mostly street people who had no possessions and fewer critical thinking skills. They grew to be dependent on him.

@@williamrodriguez169 Yes, my experience was in a particular church with a particular pastor and i don’t mean to represent the entire Pentecostal branch of Christianity. I think most of the people in churches that are Pentecostal are very kind and loving. But I also think it is common for parents to use corporal punishment in a lot of Christian churches- at least it was when I was a child. It was common back then in society. And all the hellfire preaching and predictions of the end of the world were likely common in a lot of working class churches back then. I think these things are damaging to children. I am a retired therapist and I used to do therapy with abused children. One of the things that happens to children who are abused is “futurelessness.” Since a lot if their childhood is just about getting through day to day on a survival level, they often lose a sense of the future and hope for the future. I saw children who told me their parents or foster parents were taking them to church and they were being taught that Jesus is going to return, this is the last days, etc. I told them they do have a future! And I told them that my grandmother was worried about Jesus coming any day, and that was back in the 1920’s! My grandmother told me that when she went out to barn one day, she heard the actual audible voice if the Lord saying “When I am going to return, I will tell you. Don’t worry about it!” Haha! Now it us 100 years later. No sign of the 2nd coming. And I read a book about about apocryphal prophecy. It turns out that people have held the belief that He is coming for thousands of years! Even in other cultures there is a form if this type of belief. Every time there is change and upheaval in society people interpret it as the end days. The English thought the end of time was coming when Cromwell took over the government in the 1700’s! And that is only one example of this belief surfacing during times of change. Children should not have to be raised to expect the end to come!!

The thing about coming from a cult is it becomes more obvious when you see others using the same tactics. You may have fallen into cult belief without realizing it. Spread love not hate. Be free from someone else telling you what to believe. If the media is telling you “this person said blah blah blah…” go look it up and see if it is true. Find out what was really said, the FULL video or statement (whatever it may be). Remember, they mix truth with lies to make themselves more believable. Don’t just blindly believe what people tell you. Let your mind be truly free.

I live in Alma. When I first moved here, a family member took me on a walk through the former compound. It was a weird place, and weird knowing a cult had their headquarters in this small Southern town. Hard to believe he could have so many businesses in a town of just a couple thousand people! PS- I was driving this morning and passed the road that turns up the hill to the former compound and was thinking about the Alamo case, and then this video popped up about an hour later! In the 90's while on a visit to LA with friends, my wife and I were asked to attend what we thought was a church funeral for a past acquaintance. What we encountered however was an attempt by this congregation for what we could only assume was a Pentecostal resurrection. We thought at first they were just praying really really hard and making a show of being moved with passion, as Pentecostals are known to be, I gather. But soon it was apparent to the both of us that what they really were expecting was a for-real miracle to happen that night. It was then we realized from the discussion that the local authorities, police, medical examiner etc. had not yet been notified of the death as we were asked not to mention he had died as we were leaving. Of course my wife, being a nurse who could lose her licence in just such a case, called the medical examiner's office immediately as soon as we got down the road and reported the death. What happened back at the church is anybody's guess.

This is a true minority of people who profess belief in Christ as their savior. Sadly, in many areas, a lot of people are easily deluded by false religious leaders, politicians, celebrities... In any area, it behooves one to examine as deeply as they can the claims anyone makes before aligning themselves with that person or denouncing them. Critical thinking involves more than just a feeling. It involves research and study.

@@Naptosis According to the reports, Christ was raised because he wasn't just a human, though fully human. He was at the same time, fully God and therefore sinless. The Bible does not teach that all (or any) humans were raised to an everlasting existence on this earth. Even with the miracles of raising the dead attributed to Jesus and his early disciples , none of the resurrected lived on forever on earth. They eventually all died as we all will. The "sign gifts" were only given to the Apostles of the early church, not to everyone. Paul himself stated “whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away” (1 Cor. 13:8). The only reason for these "new at the time" signs, knowledge, and prophecies was because the Scriptures were yet to be completed and they testified of Christ's divinity. But now we have the scriptures testifying to the story and reason for Christ's resurrection. A thorough study of the testimonies reveal many diverse folks who witnessed Christ in the flesh and believed so strongly in what they saw and heard that they could not deny its truth. They were willing to suffer horrendous deaths and persecution to get the word out. That's fairly convincing evidence. Sadly, charlatans as Tony Alamo take advantage of gullible people by instructing them to not examine the scriptures or the evidence. Study any belief for yourself and never take someone's word for it, especially if the self-described "prophet" engages in habitually ungodly behavior.

Haha the Alamos lived near my hometown in Western Arkansas. You could see the cult compound just off the highway. For a time they had a restaurant and that Western apparel store in Alma, AR. I went to the restaurant once (was taken there by a friend’s family!), it was OK. I lost track of all that when I went off to college.

Another interesting case. Tony definitely had a lot of narcissistic traits. I would even say he was a dark triad. One common trait/behavior I've noticed with leaders similar to Tony, they keep followers so busy with nonsensical activities for the purpose of deflecting attention away from themselves when doing something deceptive.

Living in Ft. Smith AR at the time I was very aware of the Alamos and their followers. The flyers on windshields were annoying, but were effective. A good friend gave up everything to live at the compound. Also, when the government held the auction of merchandise, a friend bought several of the jackets. Mine had New York on it.

My in-laws took me to eat at the Alamos restaurant in Alma, Ark in the late 70’s. The place seemed to look decent enough ( decor wise ) but it had photos of autographed stars all over the walls . The young staff were creepy. They appeared to me to be run aways and very protective of their “ faith “ and adamant they were right re: religion. When our food came these kids would come and ask personal spiritual questions and I remember a really bad feeling . * I was the only Catholic ( I married into a Protestant family ) and it seemed to really bother these kids ..they went from really warm to super cold in an instant as if I disgusted them . No more than 48-72 hours later in ft smith , ark , I was going to get in my car and under my wiper was a paper with the typing “ we must rid ourselves of Catholicism by any means necessary “ and their foundation letterhead was on it and signed and I totally freaked . Idk how they got my info. My husband checked my car every day for weeks . No one else in the neighborhood had this happen . I also remember when they thawed her out for her “ resurrection “.. I can’t express the feeling I had when at their restaurant. I do know when I asked one or two of the youth questions they became indignant ( BEFORE they found out I was Catholic) Makes me sick to think of it . Their Sunday tv shows were definitely CREEPY. He and Jim Jones are the same type of personality. Arkansas was after Tony for a long time . The stories that came out are dreadful. I wasn’t from Arkansas so all of this was completely astonishing and scary to me .

I grew up near this area and had many instances of finding their pamphlets stuck under my windshield wipers on my car. They’d swarm into parking lots and do this all the time. I think they finally got popped for littering. They were still doing it 20 years ago. There were always rumors of slave type labor making their denim sparkly jackets.

There is a 4 episode docuseries called Ministry of Evil that is about the Alamo Cult available on Amazon Prime. I had to buy it, but it wasn't expensive and really worth it. I highly recommend it. They talk to Susan's daughter, a bunch of survivors, his former child brides, their "adopted" son, law enforcement. The story about how Tony stole Susan's body and dragged it around with him while he was on the run, forcing Chris, Susan's daugther, to sue him for the return of her mother's body is just one of the insane stories. Oh, and the child labor. There's also a series on different cults by People (idk, but it's also amazing) and they profile the Alamos. At the time of that filming, the Alamo church still existed. One of the former child brides, Amy Eddy, said her mother still believes that Tony Alamo is going to come back to life.
