I looked this up after reading this comment, and I found out it wasn't anyone above her telling her no, it was her own people in the crew not understanding the point of the scene, since to them it was just another scene showing that she can block bullets and they didn't quite get the point she was trying to get across with it. Since now we all understand the brilliance of the scene, I guess this is less a story about opposition and more a story about how showing instead of telling gets the point across so much better.

It makes me tear up every single time. (Including watching it here.) I think this is *THE* perfect "becoming the hero" shot/scene in all of superhero movies history. There are other 'really damn good' ones (Christopher Reeves' Superman revealing the suit and hearing John Williams' theme for the first time; Into the Spiderverse "falling up" shot being the other two that I think come even *CLOSE* to this,) but this is it. This is "the hero shot". For me, growing up, Christopher Reeves was Superman. Lynda Carter was Wonder Woman. That was all there was to it. No offense to Lynda, she's great, but Gal Gadot is now forevermore Wonder Woman to me. (I am torn between Michael Keaton and Christian Bale as Batman, though.)

I like your theory, but I'm not convinced the shift in style was intentional. The early fight scenes were shot practically with actors. Whereas the later fight scene got much more elaborate with extensive use of CGI. Heavily CGI-ed action doesn't need constant cuts to hide the actors or make up for a director's lack of skill in staging sequences. I've noticed this on a lot of big films. The practical action is sloppy and quick-cut. But when the CGI comes in it becomes much more smooth with longer takes.

I can see your point; however, several of the fights are clearly Diana and stunt performers, not CG. There’s also the very clear color grading difference which also follows Diana’s overall arc.

2:50 agreed. Long cuts - where you can see clearly a lack of wires and staging and be under no illusion that it's the nominal actor at all times really helps sell the realistic feel. One that springs to mind - albeit guns/judo - not swords - is Keanu Reeves in the John Wick series.

I just wish they'd been brave enough to realize that the third-act fight with Ares didn't need to happen at all. He'd won already, and he could have just faded away into the next decades-long plot to let humans show their true colors with barely any prodding needed. He'd made his point, and he really didn't need to put himself in danger by trying to duke it out. Let her have a few decades in our world to realize the truth he's set before her. She had defeated his worldly agents, and we had a good contrast of his message with Steve's self-sacrifice anyway, so there still would've been hope for her to continue with. There was no reason for either of them to fight except her anger and frustration, which would have worked against her even more if he'd let it simmer for a few years. Also, they would have saved a LOT of time and money on CGI, and saved us from having to watch a fight that had such a very weak grasp on even comic-book physics. None of that looked right. But oh, well. It was ALMOST a perfect movie, which is well more than you can usually say for DC!

One of the more mystifying aspects of this film for me was that they set it during WWI instead of WW2, but the Germans were still the principal bad guys? Like what? The Germans were significant players in WW1, but historians still don't unanimously agree they should be solely blamed. Most historians see it as multiple european nations being stupid and power hungry. Technically the Russians/Serbians started it against the Austro-hungarian empire. Germany was attributed blame because they lost and admittedly did not do much to de-escalate the conflict since they had their own political ambitions they wanted to achieve through war. The motivations for the war were complex and based on complex international treaties. No one was trying to take over the world here, and no one did it because killing people was fun. The motivations for WW1 and its horrors cannot be reduced to one side being more evil, all sides engaged in a protracted and deadly conflict for so long without any real moral reason for fighting other than that war was a political strategy. The movie doesn't really adequately portray this. The Germany of WW1 was pre-Nazi, so wonder woman wasn't even fighting nazis here, yet Germany are still the only war mongering bad guys in this movie and the British are the presumed arbiters of morality. Why? By all means criticize the Germans, but don't forget about the leaders of the French, British, Russians, Serbians and Austrohungarians that did the same things. Nowadays everyone thinks of Germany during the world wars and automatically thinks Nazis even though they didn't even exist during WW1. WW1 was not a conflict with clear cut good and bad guys, all of the countries involved were out of line. As a result many aspects of this movie's morality just don't work for me, the setting and plot is just too noticeably ahistorical for me.

@@hurricaneofcats The reason they set it in WWI is because they wanted to stop the comparisons with Captain America that they KNEW would be coming. Personally, I'd rather they just have done WWII and owned it for themselves, but this is the choice they went with.

@@hurricaneofcats I disagree with this to some extent. I reckon that this was the entire point of Posh British Lupin Guy being Ares; Wonder Woman was *wrong* for assuming that the Germans were being piloted by some great evil. It was great that she and Steve were trying to tackle one specific evil plot done by one specific German faction, but her assumption that they were the Big Bads of the war is shown to be false. These specific Germans were the bad guys of Steve's spy thriller, nothing more. (Thematically, that is. They would still have done untold damage if it hadn't been for our heroes getting involved.) The real causes of the war were, as you indicate, the Sir Patrick Morgans of the war, the political power players having a fiendishly complicated game of chess with the lives of men. These were the men whose ears Ares had been whispering in, tricking them into the worst war of all time through all the means you mention. This is depicted early in the movie, though our action heroes brush it aside as unimportant (and, again, are explicitly wrong to do so). The British are certainly not helping matters in that scene, and they are in no way depicted as the arbiters of morality; there's a reason that Ares is hiding among their ranks. The "Germany Is Ares" thing was (in my opinion) absolutely an on-purpose fakeout, because they knew it'd work on (most of) the audience as much as it worked on Diana and Steve. That definitely exploits incorrect modern ideas of the facts of WWI but I don't think that the movie is _serving_ those ideas as much as you indicate. It's ultimately trying to subvert those ideas. And then, as Chasmodius says, the movie ends it all with a clumsy god-superhero fight-to-the-death bonanza that sort of obscures the entire point of the previous scene... I make no excuses for that, and I can absolutely see how the message could have been lost in the midst of it all. (I am very bad at replying lately so apologies if you respond and I do not for a while.)

@@hurricaneofcats I'm very late to this discussion, but I do think there's a real point to having it set in WWI as opposed to WWII: the driving cause of the war. I would argue that WWII was one of the few (if not the only) war in modern history in which people could feel righteous about the cause; they were fighting against Hitler and Fascism and Pure Evil (TM). There's a reason we still hold up Hitler as the go to example for a real life monster. People rallied around the war effort because of provocation and because they believed in the cause - a true good vs evil fight! (Obviously this is a big oversimplification, bc this is a youtube comment lol) If they wanted Diana seeking out and defeating the cause of senseless and horrific violence, WWI is the obvious choice because that war was so enormous and so bloody and most depressingly, so pointless. The driving force behind the fighting in WWI was political alliances and obligations of treaties. They weren't fighting for a cause or something that inspired national pride (unlike WWII with the perfect villain of Hitler), they were just fighting because they had to, and there was no end goal in sight other than abstract defeat of other parties. That's why I actually think WWI was the perfect choice for this story, because she could look at the situation, see the lack of obvious inciting conflicts, and conclude that of course there must be something supernatural propelling the violence. This is also why I think the end would have been far stronger if there had been no Ares at all and Diana had had to actually confront the pointlessness of the violence and the evils that humans are capable of, but that's a longer conversation xD

I wouldn't call it the ONLY reason given how good the movie was as a whole, but it presumably was a significant factor. It's good to bear in mind that real-life combat experience does not necessarily transfer well to stage fighting if you want that stage fighting to look cinematic. That said, yeah, her athleticism and discipline will have certainly helped her represent Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot being pregnant might have been a factor. So maybe the jittery cutting wasn’t 100% intentional. I imagine her scenes might have been limited to what she and others were comfortable wouldn’t be harmful, or the longer cuts would show acting safer than optimal for perfect shots. So maybe that limited and/or influencing the editing. Or this theory is just bullshit and Gal Gadots pregnant shots were awesome. (On the Island many fight scenes had green screen on her stomach for replacing pregnant stomach with CGI non-pregnant stomach.)

I agree with and like all you say, Jill. At the same time, you don't mention one point that appears obvioius when I watch what you wrote. The shift in styles from quick cut to long shot also corresponds to a shift from swords and spears to guns and Ares's magical weapons. Diana (and the actresses playing her) are in no real danger of getting clobbered when the only things hitting them are post-production special effects. It seems to me that it would have been riskier, taken longer, and cost more to do long shots of actual sword battles with actors and extras in danger of getting clobbered - or just looking bad. Later, when Diana is running down a street and around the corner lifting her sheild at appropriate moments, the post production can match her timing and long takes are thoroughly safe and easier to choreograph. Some of this may have come into making the decsion of style of filming fight scenes and the evolution of it in the movie.

I don't know how well actual fighting translates to stage fighting, especially military. Not only is stage fighting much more concerned with looks than realism, you also have to pretend to hit instead of actually hitting people. Most civilian martial training would ask you to stop before hitting, but I'm not sure if military would." FWLIW: The two things in the first Wonder Woman movie that were the least believable for me were: (1) The _fighting_ between Ares and WW at the end of the film LOOKED _TOO_ CGI. Now, I realize that much of it HAD TO BE CGI -- as were many other shots in the film -- because you cannot do much of that practically. However, IMO it visually went over the top too many times. (2) There is an historical aviation inaccuracy in the movie. Early in the film when Chris Pine's character steals an airplane, it is a Fokker Eindecker. Early in WWI, the Eindecker helped establish German air superiority in what was called the _"Fokker scourge"_ on 1916. By 1918, near the end of the war {when the events of the movie take place}, those aircraft had been taken out of frontline service as they were outclassed by newer Allied aircraft. The most successful German fighter aircraft at that time would have been the Fokker D7 biplane, or the Fokker D8 parasol wingged monoplane which was just going into service. _That_ would have been much more historically accurate.

She has an IMDB page but the Taming of the Shrew video and Nerdquest are the kinds of things you are looking for.

@@jasonulysess3652 I guess so, thanks for pointing me to the right direction. The IMDB page confused me, the only thing I could register there was her portrait picture. I thought Jill had acted in several full-length movies (I searched for taming of the Shrew...hmhm...I know now.) I'll watch NerdQuest and that Taming of the Shrew VIDEO (movie too) in my own time then! HEHEHEHEHEHEhehehe(insidious villainous evil laugh).

I was wondering if you think you’ll ever take a look at a scene from Game Of Thrones, I’ve just found your channel but it’s interesting watching you talk about Fights scenes in movies. I watch a lot of channels that talk about movies but your the first I’ve found that seems to talk specifically about fight scenes.

Honestly, Wonder Woman pretty much perfect up to the Ares Fight. I have some (thematic) problems with the Aries fight, but up to that point I don't think I would change anything, and the problem with the Aries fight wasn't in in how the fight looked.

Since you like fight choreography, I was wondering what your opinion on the fights filmed by Adorea Olomouc? They attempt a more realistic feel without detracting from any narrative a fight might provide.

One fight scene I would be interested in seeing your opinion of is the cottage fight between Elizabeth and Darcy in "Pride, Prejudice and Zombies." Instead of waiting for the phrase to end to deliver dialogue, the two are arguing while going through the phrase.

2:59 As an audience member i resent that. After all.. i watch your videos from start to finish. Audience attention span is not in question. If everyone has done their jobs , the audience cannot take their eyes off the screen. If not ..no amount of editing is going to make up for that

The problem with the early scenes for me is the fact that I keep being taking out of the action to say "Who is the Super Model, wait that's Wonder Woman?" Should look like Linda Hamilton in T2 instead we get Kate Moss surrounded by people who look like Linda Hamilton in T2 to make it look even worse. Keeping in mind that Gal Gadot is the best thing in 3 films and the above simple fact is the problem with all DC films because in a Marvel movie, they would have made damn sure she looked like Wonder Woman.
