How to run a small business plant shop and what a typicall day of work looks like for me. I needed to put up new plant listings, have a plant photo shoot and repot a ton of propagations to restock my inventory. Basically a typical plant care sunday for me. Hi Clay, thank you for your kind words 🥰. I don't really know how exactly etsy works but I think most things apply for all the possible platforms and ways to sell plants. I don't know how well etsy works for you in terms of traffic but I guess it's also a great place to sell because it is an established website and people use it to search for specific plants.

I get that Karen, it is quite time intensive. Trading is a wonderful option to get your cuttings out to the world as well :) I live and sell in germany & I don't ship plants at all. I decided to only sell locally since shipping was so much work and time on top. I really tried minimizing the energy needed for my sales 😁.

Nothing, just water. Sometimes the cuttings don't root if you keep them to cold. Other than that no tricks involved.

How long did it take you to start where you felt comfortable with your inventory? Think thats where I am just growing collection rn

I think for almost 2 years I only collected/ bought plants and didn't sell anything. Especially because I started with small cuttings or plants so I didn't want to propagate and cut them immediately. Once I had more plants and also bigger plants I was able to start taking cuttings or had to trim plants anyway. Then it just slowly got more overtime. My first year of selling plants I only did it very sporadically as a private seller. So just take your time.. there will be a point in your collecting journey where the propagations start adding up and then you'll know 😉💚

Habe auch schon Pflanzen auf Willhaben verkauft (österreichisches Portal) und es kommt mir recht zeitaufwändig vor. Was glaubst du, auf welchen Stundensatz kommt man da? Mich mit meinem Hobby selbständig machen wär echt ein Traum, aber ich weiß nicht, wie realistisch das ist.

Also vollständig davon leben kann man in diesem Maßstab denke ich nicht. Da müsste man schon irgendwie skalieren. Entweder seltenere Pflanzen verkaufen / einkaufen und weiterverkaufen oder wesentlich mehr verkaufen. In dem Fall würde ich wohl auch mehr verändern müssen. Ich kann wirklich keine Zahl daran hängen, das sind jetzt wirklich flapsige Schätzungen: Also wenn ich 10 Pflanzen für je 10€ im Schnitt verkaufe. Für die Fotos und die Anzeige brauche ich dann so 1h. aber dann muss man ja noch in den Nachrichten mit Leuten kommunizieren. Das geht zwar flott, aber man muss halt immer mal drauf schauen lass es mal 10min/Pflanze sein. Da die meisten Leute die Pflanzen bei mir abholen habe ich zum Glück keinen Aufwand mit Versand. Vorher muss ich die Pflanzen natürlich pflegen und schneiden und eintopfen lass das mal 1h/ 10 Pflanzen sein. Also bleiben dann eventuell so 95€/3,5 Std also so 27€/h. Vielleicht sollte ich mal Interesse halber für einen Monat die Zeiten dokumentieren wenn ich etwas für den Shop mache.

Ich glaube auch, dass Pflanzenhandel eher ein mögliches Geschäftsmodell ist als der Verkauf von Cuttings - Pflanzen züchten und vermehren geht im Gewächshaus einfach am besten. Ein bisschen Startkapital hätte ich ja sogar, aber mir fehlt noch die Erfahrung mit den Pflanzen und damit, was die Leute überhaupt wollen. Ich kann allerdings sehr gut mit Hoyas...
