I always wondered if Alocasia can be propagated by stem propagation....so I just did it! For science 🤓. What are your experiences with Alocasia props? In my opinion I prefer the seperation of corms. It's much faster and less stressful 😅😅

I didn't even know that this was possible with alocasias (so thanks!!) and was similarly unhappy with my leggy Frydek.. I started airlayering now and I'm very excited to be chopping it soon 😇

I've propagated many Alocasia from trunk or stem cuttings over the years. Even large form Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma can be propagated this way. All produce cormels, or cormlets. But there are species that grow pups off the tuber or trunk instead, and they can also be cut off and started, even without roots of their own, if they have their own tuber, even if it's only a small portion.
@iapprove8392
@iapprove8392 Жыл бұрын
But that's not a stem dear. Alocasias stems are tubers. The part there that looks like the stem of the frydek which is very stiff it is indeed part of the rhyzome that's why you were able to get roots. Otherwise the cutting would die.

Can i just say how much I appreciate shooting your video's over a longer period of time? It really shows in the quality, and makes it so useful! Also I stem propagated my Alocasia cucullata once. Took forever for the remaining stem to sprout, but it did 'branch' out into two stems 😊 hopefully your frydek does too!

It's so much more rewarding to document something over time, I agree. I have to practice a lot of patience though 😅. My motherplants also took really long to sprout but I experienced the same thing as you did. more branches with new healthy growth 👌😁 My vriegated Frydek hasn't really branched out from the stem but started to grow 4 corms from it's base 😅 I'm not even mad.

9:45 Be cautious when using terra cotta, as it can wick the moisture away from the cuttings!!! If you use cling film make sure you wrap the whole thing and maybe water a little more to account for the moisture being drawn away.

Very good concern Aiden, the terracotta saucers I use are usually coated with a watertight layer on one side. But wrapping it all around with cling film and watering more would be a great way to ensure the water staying in.

I love that you document the process so well. I'm familiar with tropical plants, but I moved to Philadelphia over 1.5 year ago, and this is my first time growing indoors. I love alocasia. I've had 4 since. All die come winter. They are so finicky. I moved and they also died, they didn't like the change. The bulbs have survived, but every time I have to start again from scratch. They give me little warning. They start getting yellow and before I find if they need more light, less light, or less water, they're gone. Help please! I'd appreciate any advice you can offer in terms of light and water indoors 😢

I had mine in my self made Aroid mix for the longest time. Approx: Orchid bark 20% Perlite 25% Coco Coir 25% Soil from the store 25% Worm castings 5% Very much eyeballing everything 😂😂😂 I had trouble with the roots on 1 out of 3 of my Alocasias as well. I also think it might have been inconsistent watering. As of lately I potted lots of my cuttings into SYBASoil Aroid mix shorturl.at/hjrN8 . All of them are growing extremely well in there. New leaves look great but I recently saw they also have extra Alocasia mix. Oooor if soil is not working for you try Semi hydroponic substrate. There are some people who swear on that stuff when it comes to Alocasias. I have one in pon as well. It's always well watered and the roots grow really well in there.

I have 13 various Alocasia and most are in Semi hydro. They love it. My Frydek gives me a leaf every 2 weeks. The soil mixture should include perlite, orchid bark, I also use Lecha balls, worm castings, charcoal. They also love it. Although semi hydro is easier I enjoy the soil potted babies because the corms can be stuck right ack in the soil. Buy a moisture meter if You haven’t yet. Takes the guesswork out of the hobby. Good luck.

Great experiment. Do you give the Variegated Frydek much Licht or just room environment light? Just got a huge semi hydro baby. She was totally pot bound and after getting 18 corms and 2 babies I will be planting her in a bigger clear pot or a glass vase. Although the green version is fairly easy to grow I have my worries about the variegated ones. She is to date my most expensive plant (12 leaves 8 x ca.25cm long costed 70€!!) I really don't know. They are just chilling in my living room, no special care. I have to say with little baby propagations of alocasia I had spider mites as well. Especially once I take them out of the propboxes. I guess they are more vulnerable than the mature plants and also the sudden change in humidity isn't helpful at all. With my little Alocasia Polly I am also struggling quite a bit. I seem to only be able to care well for frydeks and micholitzianas 😅 Maybe I was just lucky the spider mites weren't able to get to where my main plant collection is situated. As a suggestion maybe try some predatory mites to prevent the spidermites from appearing on your plants 😊I am also getting some as a preventative measure for spring/summer.

If your plants are indoors, a routine of spraying them down in the shower regularly and receiving plenty of bright indirect sunlight helps. Treating the soil for pests is also important, so if you treat regularly, be sure to include the soil where their eggs can hatch days later.

You have wonderful videos but i must tell you that you cannot do stem propagations on alocasias. What you did was propagate by using the central rhyzome. The stems grow from the rhyzome and are tuber that cannot be propagated. Your frydek has a very long rhyzome that should be growing under soil which is what happens in tropical forests. Great video but thats a rhyzome.
