One of the best memories of Christmas as a child of the 60's and 70's- watching the snowman voiced by Burl Ives ride the Norelco Shaver through the snow. That ad meant that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was on! Holly Jolly Christmas was one of the classic songs in that show.

In addition to his recording career and generally being the voice of Christmas through his music and narrating "Rudolph," Burl Ives was also a superb dramatic actor. He won an Oscar in 1958 for "The Big Country" and was also spectacular in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" as Big Daddy, a role he originated on Broadway.

The Big Country Is an outstanding movie. Not just an outstanding western it ranks as one of the best movies of all time. Burl Ives won the Oscar but the cast included Gregory Peck Charlton Heston and Jean Simmons just to name a few. And also featured Chuck Connors the rifleman as a villain. My suggestion is if you read this you should watch The Big Country.

Thanks guys you’ve really warmed my 55 year old heart. This mans voice is Christmas to those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s. He was the narrator of the Rudolph TV special that still airs every year. His voice was so comfortable it was like your grandfather singing you a song. Also a musician and a gifted actor. Hearing this song always takes me back to the Christmas’s of my youth . Good choice and Merry Christmas to your beautiful family.

If your children (or you) haven't seen the Animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964 you need to show it to them. It is the one done with stop-motion animation using puppets. That was a yearly thing when I was a kid waiting anxiously for when it was going to be played on TV during the Christmas season. Burl Ives does the voice of the snowman and sings three songs during the show. This being one of them.

Burl Ives was a frequent guest on the "Captain Kangaroo" show, during the holidays. Those of us who were kids then, learned a lot of Christmas songs from him. We even recognized him when he appeared in snowman form on the CBS holiday special, "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer". We certainly recognized his voice and he looked exactly like we thought he should look like if he were a snowman. No Christmas since then has gone by without me thinking of Burl Ives and his songs.

This song was originally recorded by Burl Ives for the 1964 NBC TV special, "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer". In 1965, Ives recorded the song again for his own Christmas music album. Late in his life, in the 1990s, Burl Ives re-recorded "Have A Holly, Jolly Christmas", and it was once again a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Music Chart. I read an article about Ives recording the song once again in "Billboard" magazine. At this point in his life, he was wheelchair-bound, and fighting cancer, but in the interview for the article, Burl Ives was very happy that the song became a hit once again, and was thankful to all of his fans who remembered him, and bought the record.

Burl is a personal hero to me. All the singers said he was an actor, all the actors said he was a singer, and he took BOTH checks and laughed all the way to the bank for about 70 years. Got to appreciate that level of scam. Love that guy. Something else to consider about this song that no one ever notices: the HOT 12 string ELECTRIC guitar licks. That was pretty innovative at that time. If you're looking for other Burl tunes to do, check out anything fro the album "My Funny Way of Laughing". I grew up with that one, and when I left the parent's place, that one came with me. I still have it. It's up here on YT, as the whole album and separate songs. He also did a kid's album we had when I was growing up, full of songs about things like the little brown duck, swimming in the water, little brown duck, doing what he aught-er. It's pretty good, too.

As a child of the 60s, I grew up with Burl Ives. A folk musician, Burl did a ton of Children's music. His Association with the Bass & Rankin Christmas specials have made him a Christmas fixture. Christmas for me is Perry Como, Andy Williams, Burleson Ives, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis etc. I loved my parents Christmas albums playing constantly. The giddy anticipation as the networks played their Christmas specials. The one night you ran after dinner to take your bath - no argument. Had to be in front of the TV in your footie pj's ready for every second.

Burl Ives is one of those guys who didn't have that great a singing voice, oddly high and a bit thin, but he made the MOST of what he had, and his personality shone through pretty much constantly. His voice is so cheerful that you just can't resist smiling. The only singer I can think of who's similar is Fred Astaire: Fred didn't have that good a voice either, but his personality was just outstanding and it comes through strongly.

They may have used it in Elf but if you ever watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer it was there first. He was the narrator Sam the Snowman and sang several Christmas songs in Rudolph.

Thank you for your reaction. Burl Ives' Christmas songs are great but they are only a small part of his music. His folk music was also great with his wonderful voice.

Along with being a renowned folk singer, Burl Ives was an accomplished actor. He appeared on Broadway, originating the role of Big Daddy in Tennessee Williams' "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1958, playing Rufus Hannassey in "The Big Country". Other Burl Ives hits include "A Little Bitty Tear".

Everybody knows the voice of Burl Ives, if they have ever watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and virtually every kid has watched that movie. He played the Snowman narrator in the show. He also sings the most famous version of Frosty the Snowman. Everyone knows Burl, even if they don't realize it.

So apparently I was a kid at the right time for music of all kinds, we were truly blessed to have these golden voices at the time. This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas tunes...in my mind, I am standing by our Christmas tree in our apartment in Germany in 1964 listening to Burl Ives! I have 3 decorations from that tree that survived all these years. 🤗

Okay, for me, this from the OG Christmas show Rankin and Bass's Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Burl Ives voiced the snowman that narrated the show. He also sang Silver and Gold, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in that show. It was a Christmas tradition in the house I grew up in. Burl Ives was an actor and folk singer.

Great one guys. I think of the mid sixties when I was a boy and the Christmas special every year "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" Burl Ives was the ❄️🌨️ snowman and he sings this song which was always a highlight for me. Speaking of old Rudolph, Gene Autry singing "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer 🦌" is a must, will really put the Christmas spirit in you and you little ones will love it, a true classic. Don't forget about Bing Crosby with Rosemary Clooney "Silver Bells" would love too see you two react too it, another classic and it's right up there with "White Christmas" trust me, you'll love it if you get around to it. 🎄✌️☮️💕
