Hi, I grow a lot of hardy tropicals such as musa basjoo, phormium, gunnera, bamboo (fargesia & phyllostachys), fatsia, palms cordyline, capitata and trachycarpus. Thankfully you have just shown my husband why I keep saying no to eucalyptus trees. I know they can be copiced, but we have a semi detached house house and garden. 😅 Great video and freedom to express yourself on your own land, in an amazing jungle. All the best, Jane

Very cool, I saw the last video and figured you had found hardy jungle looking plants. Eucalyptus is something I would have never expected, is it really not too cold for them in your climate? I am experimenting with figs personally and the winters are tough on them where I am from.
@Temperate2Tropical
@Temperate2Tropical 9 ай бұрын
oh epic thanks for watching! Yeah the eucalyptus constantly amaze me, there are varieties that easily take well below -8c and they dont all get massive..so there might be one out there for you unless u get crazy cold! same about the figs, we get -5 and if they are in an exposed place they normally fall off, i think the key will be finding the right microclimate here!

It looks amazing. I have to ask whether you have had guidance on whether these foreign species could be invasive or have any negative effects on native biodiversity? After all, they’re not native to the U.K. for the most part.

Hi! thanks and great question, native vs non native flora and fauna is something i have spent years thinking about and plan to do a video with some of my thoughts, the area was previously a monoculture of gorse, im the guardian of 1acre of native forest here and have planted alot more, when it comes to food and self sufficiency (i talk more about that in my first video) ive come to the opinion i would rather grow it myself than have it imported..

Hiya Dan, Loving this channel and looking forward to following your progress. I was chuffed to hear kiwi plants being mentioned and reasons why. Hi Dan...I love what you've put out so far on YT. I subscribed after your very first video! Would you be willing to provide a list of the plants and trees you have used? You only mentioned a few of them... I have just begun developing 4 hectares of bare land in South Africa and my vision is restore it to it's natural indigenous woodland forest state (also incorporating some exotic plant species that would survive here, but I want to have that tropical jungle-type look as much as possible too. It would be a food forest for animal and human alike. I am learning all I can from people like you on KZbin undertaking similar projects as I have never done this before and really appreciate all your input and advice. Unfortunately, I can't grow any eucalyptus trees here - they drink too much water - but perhaps I could incorporate some more of your other plant and tree choices into my own little jungle/woodland forest... I would be so grateful if you would be willing to share that info too. Thanks for the great content and keep them coming!
@Temperate2Tropical
@Temperate2Tropical 9 ай бұрын
i didnt imagine anyone would tune in from south africa! your project sounds exciting...ive never made a list, i cant commit to making one right now my friend as im pretty crazy busy..but ill show more of the plants..what is your lowest temp in C you get there?
@cands7321
@cands7321 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply Dan! Lowest temp would be around minus 3 degrees Celsius but very seldom, only once or twice a winter...most of the time lowest temps are around 5°C to 7°C and at night only. In summer, hottest days are mid to high 30's and very occasionally up to 43°C. Most of the year temps remain between 15 to 28 degrees. For the more tender understory plants, I will wait until I have a decent enough tree canopy for protection from wind, cold and African sun, before planting those different layers you were speaking about, to give them a better chance of thriving. First the hardy trees and shrub types, then, when there's enough shade after a few years (and lots of patience!), I'll plant all the other shade loving stuff; should protect them from the occasional light frost. I'm also putting in swales and berms as most of my land is on a bit of a slope and I need to collect as much rain as possible and avoid run-off. I definitely don't get the kind of annual rainfall you do in the UK. Because of the time and expense involved etc, I want to make sure about my plant choices; am doing a lot of research, hence my questions. Am also implementing in stages/zones and not all at once. Will be great to hear about more of your plant choices on your videos. Could you possibly show the plant names on the screen as you talk about them as I can't always catch the pronunciation especially if a New Zealand name, for example?
