Almost Retired in Mexico

Күн бұрын

When they were 50 years old, Paul and Bonnie left snowy Canada to buy a bed and breakfast / yurtground in San Ignacio Baja California Sur. This is a great stopping spot if you're driving from the US border south to La Paz or Los Cabos. This oasis is full of date palms (and other palms) and features a fresh water river, which is very uncommon on the Baja Peninsula.
Because the cost of labor is so low in Mexico (compared to the US and Canada,) Paul and Bonnie are able to have a staff of a dozen people to do the cooking, cleaning, maintenance, etc. Then they can be semi-retired and only do the parts of the business they enjoy. And a number of local Mexicans have good jobs with benefits.
They purchased the place from another Canadian couple who was ready to take the next step deeper into retirement. They continue to live in San Ignacio.
They have about a dozen yurts for rent and all include breakfast. www.ignaciospr...

This is very useful. I had done a search for hotels that are pet friendly on the drive down (we have two dogs.) A logical stop would be San Ignacio, but couldn't find a pet friendly place. This is perfect. So, if that's not enough of a hint, my wife and I did decide on Loreto. We really love La Paz, but just couldn't find a home/location that was satisfactory. In any event, after four house hunting trips - two to La Paz and two to Loreto, we finally found a house that we are thrilled with (and the excitement hasn't diminished since returning to the states. Our projected closing date is July 31, so hopefully we will be headed down in mid-July. We'll be applying for permanent residency and our questions nearly double daily. 😂 We've bought Mariana's guide and have learned so much from your channel, as well as that of Mariana, QRoo Paul, No Bull, and a few others. We can't wait.

Congratulations! Loreto is a great little town. And the airport has way more flights than the La Paz airport.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico Yes, the flights are a nice feature (and a surprising one, given that La Paz is the capital.) Just remember, you'll always have a place to stay when you're passing through.

Hi Brighton, do you have a set of vídeos about snowbirds in Baja, especially La Paz, and expats? Or about life in general in La Paz especially for those over 65? I'm curious about why they chose that area instead of Yucatan or Puerto Vallarta?

I don't have anything specifically like that. But I have a playlist of videos from Baja California Sur.

I make about $1,000 to $1,500 a month with a good internet connection. My other bills are small. When my lease is up in August, I want to leave the US for a Spanish speaking country., probably Mexico. Would that work for such a beautiful place.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
You could live in $1500 a month in Mexico. But you probably couldn’t get residency in Mexico. You’d need a tourist visa and you’d need to renew every 6 months (or more often.)

Brighton, what's your experience at airports with immigration who want to know a person's return ticket? Apparently the airport immigration can deny boarding if the person doesn't have a return ticket. Is there a way around this possibility? Apparently they don't like a one way ticket and can insist on a return ticket within the 180 day period. Plus even if a person has an extended return there's the possibility of not getting a visa for the duration of the time before that return ticket.

@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
I'm really not sure. Immigration rules are changing a lot every day right now (they are implementing a new computer system.) The last I heard was that 180 days was pretty standard at airports. You could say that you plan to return by car (like you are meeting someone in Mexico and then you're driving north in a few months.) And it's also immigration agent by immigration agent. Each one has their own mood and opinions. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico Is there any anecdotal information? I mean if they are unpredictable then how can someone even book a trip not knowing if they'll get the desired period for a tourist visa?! It sounds crazy m.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
@@dovygoodguy1296 It seems like right now 180 days is pretty common. I think they would give you whatever you want - as long as the new computer system doesn't show that you get a 180 day visa every 180 days. But I'm not sure. You could get an unhappy immigation agent...
