I visited Mexico at the age 20 to79, and other countries, I only purchased a home in Chicago, condo in Oak Park, and Time share in Acapulco. I am 82 now, and have lived in Queretaro since 2021 at 79. I live in a furnished studio, that includes , maid on a monthly basis. I can spend $672 to $915 depending on the USA and Peso. I order my groceries online once a month for home delivery. Funny that I watched this video, because I have been thinking about quitting work and selling everything to travel. I have 5 years before full retirement age. Yesterday I did a cost analysis of the difference between cutting back to 3 days a week until FRA, OR just taking my SS early and working 'seasonal'. My plans are for Mexico and Panama in between the work contracts. Either way is doable, but doing 'seasonal' work would extend my sanity in my opinion. I work in healthcare and there is ALWAYS a shortage, ALways a reason to work extra, and ALWAYs stress. I think best case I could work 3 days a week for 3 months a year and be able to go and live instead of just work all the time.

And the circumstances in the US are so disheartening and the future is so very bleak for women here that it breaks my heart. I don't want to be stressed anymore. They explained that they used the equity of their home in Washington to buy a house in Mexico. It doesn't make you rich but savvy. It's a blueprint for people who are fortunate to have a home that jumped in value in the past few years to use it to your advantage. It doesn't mean their rich.

That's for reiterating the point they made about selling their home and using the equity to buy a house in Mexico. Most folks don't think of their home as something they can sell to become "rich."
@AlmostRetiredinMexico26 күн бұрын
@shabadime10 I think the key point is that they didn't have $150,000 cash sitting in the bank in the US. They owned their home which had gone up in value. In the US, it's called being "house rich and cash poor." It's like owning a gold ring wedding ring and having the price of gold skyrocket. Good luck convincing your wife to sell her wedding ring because it's worth more than you paid for it.

Gentrification...
@AlmostRetiredinMexicoАй бұрын
It's interesting that you say that. This complex was previously barren land, probably owned by a Mexican family. They built a lot of houses where there were none before. I can understand how it's gentrification when a wealthy person rents an apartment that was previously rented by a less-well-off person, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on why this is gentrification. Thanks

Yes. You are absolutely correct. Rich white guys moving down to Mexico, giving people jobs, obeying the law, and helping the locals. This is in COMPARISON to MILLIONS of people who have migrated illegally, bring a lot of crime, broken hospitals and schools, and destroying our inner-cities (much to the demise of our black population). I prefer GENTRIFICATION any day to GHETTOIZATION.

Why all the wealth envy? Get to work and maybe you can be a high achiever too. I am sure the locals appreciate the employment and capital coming to their country.

Can I share a perspective on gentrification, Brighton? Firstly, it's not new. It has been occurring in various forms for centuries. With the modern form increasing in the 60s and exponentially in the last two decades. And not unique to any country. I think even when you're not displacing current residents, it still can indirectly, ripple effect contribute to shifts in economic accessibility, demographics, and cultural dynamics. When new, upscale developments are built on barren land, they often attract higher-income residents, both local and foreign. Property values and rents in adjacent areas typically rise due to the improved infrastructure, amenities, and desirability created by the new builds. Long-term residents in surrounding neighborhoods may struggle to keep up with rising living costs, even if they are not directly displaced. Local communities may find themselves priced out of their own areas, unable to access affordable housing, services, or even public spaces tailored to the incoming demographic. We built our last 4 homes, the last in a barren community, gated subdivision of single-family homes in NM, a couple years later this same model home is for sale less than a mile away for $50K more, where the median household income is $52K with an average 3.5 family size. We are in a food desert with Dollar General as our nearest "grocer". I think policies like rent control, affordable housing mandates, inclusionary zoning, property tax caps, community benefits agreements with builders, and community-led planning can mitigate its negative effects while ensuring that long-term residents share in the benefits of neighborhood improvements. My two. Love your videos. I'm also a Wisconsonite, Cheesehead. I'm planning a trip to La Paz in 2025.

@@princessofbrevity Thanks for sharing. I think gentrification is a complex topic, so I'm always open to hearing more nuanced answers. Overall, well-off people will move to desirable areas. So how do we minimize our impact and how do we make everywhere more desirable?

Hopefully you live in a safe country, not one with multiple mass shootings per day - so many the news has stopped covering them...
