From Green to Gold: Making the Most of Green Potatoes for Next Year

I harvested my Sweet Potatoes last week. I planted more slips and left them in the soil longer this year. Think I'll add another tote of them next year. Sweet Potatoes are my favorite and I have enough to last me through this winter. YEA! Now I want to grow enough to last me until the next year's harvest. Yes, it's good to evaluate what worked and what didn't. I'll be changing a lot of what I'll be growing next year. Sticking with some of the same and eliminating others. The big question for everyone is What will our weather be like for next year's growing season? My first frost date is from now until the end of this month, so I'm starting to put my garden to bed for the winter.

Sweet potatoes are my favourite, too but we don't get the heat where I live to grow outdoors. If I ever get a proper greenhouse, I'll try! I think we learn from our gardens every year. The weather is a huge factor and we never know when will be THE year or when will be a year like we've had here this year. We've had a couple of light frosts but not any biggies yet. My first frost not due till November, but I expect it'll be sooner. I just have the leeks, beans, and some winter greens still growing. Easing into letting the garden sleep this year. ☺️

Hey Robin, glad you mentioned about saving green potatoes for next seasons seed, so many believe they can’t but as you said they’re perfectly fine to grow from😄 I’ll be growing red Duke of York (2nd early) and Desire (main crop) next year 😄 I love the versatility of both

I think it's just one of those things we've been told over the years; green potatoes are bad. So we're just used to throwing them in the compost heap or in the bin. Even if people aren't keen gardeners, they could have a lovely wee container which will grow potatoes. 💗 I grew Red Duke of York last year - they're quite tasty!

My husband found my little box of "to plant" potatoes a week or two ago. It's a small box of green or ugly potatoes (has "to plant" written on the lid" that I know that he won't want to cook but I can through in a fabric pot and get some that he will cook. Well, he thought it was so funny that I had a box of potatoes stashed in the back of our spare room closet.

Yay!! I've a bonus video on Friday, but my normal regular video, we'll have a chat about it! I grew Arkansas Traveler & Marglobe (slicing tomatoes) and Black Cherry, Sungold, Cherry Baby, and my star - Cherry Falls (all cherries). I'm going to grow mainly cherry next year and about a million Cherry Falls (possible exaggeration there 😂). What did you grow?
