For such an amiable person in real life Borgnine really could play the bad guy role so well.

So beautifully shot. It's horrible, frightening, grim. And after it's done, Prewitt feels no triumph. He is empty. Zinneman was a genius.

I wish they'd left in Fatso's last line. He stumbles out, sees his wound, and says "You killed me." It adds some pathos to his demise.

Love the contrast in this scene. The two are struggling to the death and there is Hawaiian music playing and couples wandering past enjoying every day life just beyond the alley. The shot composition is amazing during the part of this sequence when Clift trips Borgnine. Poor Ernie also took a memorable beatdown from Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock! His movie credits are insane.

One of the best scenes in movie history just wonderful acting and so real. What a movie and what a cast Ernie Borgnine what an underrated actor he was and Monty Cliff a great actor even with all his inner demons Sinatra,Reed,Kerr and don't forget the straw that made this movie stir Burt lancaster what more can you say about him. A Classic movie!

Clift's demons were surely compounded by the 1958 car-crash that took away his looks and left him gaunt, almost 'frozen faced' and taking drugs until he expired in 1966, aged 45.

“The army’s going to get you sooner or later Fatso. But before they do, I want a piece of you myself.” I can’t. TOO gangsta. Prewitt was a ride or die dude. His downfall was that he had TOO much loyalty and TOO much integrity.

As a follow up...beleive it or not, "fatso" did survive that knife in the stomach and saw the error of his ways for beating old blue eyes to death, so he changed his name to McHale and was a totally jolly, chill guy for the rest of the war

Side note: Apparently when Borgnine is dying he says to Monty "You killed me. Why would you do that?". That's according to Ernest. But Zinnerman felt that might bring sympathy to the Fatso character so he cut it. Upon looking at the clip you can see the cut. Probably Zimmerman made the right call, the Fatso character didn't have any redeeming qualities, so no need to leave that line in.
