I'm aware that this was posted 4 months ago so you may not even see this, but Nurse Practitioners (highest level nurses) and Physician Assistants overlap a lot with physicians but tend to work better hours and have a better work life balance. They even get to specialize as physicians do but without residency.. If you are already an rn, becoming an NP might be a great option for you! If after looking into this the role of physician is what you want with no exception, another option is to look into the specialties with better work life balances comparatively speaking. Some specialties work more or less than others, just as some have more or less on call. Family medicine comes to mind but there are others as well, such as the "ROAD to success" specialties

When I was 11, I got 3 metal pins drilled into my finger. They were sticking out of my flesh for 3 months and ever since then, I have fallen in love with orthopedic surgery. For that short amount of time, I couldn't stop observing and touching the pins. After expressing my love for the medical field, my doctor was somehow able to convince multiple surgeons to allow me to watch an operation. I still remember each suture, and I will never forget it. They were repairing a proximal tibia fracture using plates and screws. Now, I have my heart set on becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

I've always had the vague idea of becoming a surgeon, but I wavered on it quite a bit as a 1-3.1 year med student. I really didn't know if the lifestyle sacrifice was something I was willing to go forward with. However, on my first day of surgical rotation, there was an emergent case of a very young patient who required an open appendectomy (patient was to small for laparoscopic procedure). I was invited to sit in and that single small experience solidified my desire. I was originally thinking neurosurgery, but I'm now leaning more to cardiothoracic, paediatric, or transplant surgery. Definitely not plastics tbh; it's just not something I can see myself enjoying that much. What I really want to do is operate on conjoined twins, or even witness an operation on conjoined twins. It's been something I've been absolutely fascinated by since I learned of the condition as a small child. I've always been fascinated by the macabre and by physical deformities, for some reason. I think it's partially because I was terrified of them as a child (though I felt awful and still feel awful about that), and I just love working with my hands. I only hope that my grades and ability are good enough to carry me through to residency. The only non-surgical specialty I'd consider is forensic pathology because I love true crime and the macabre

I want to know...How long did it take for your dad to finally become a certified surgeon? Like, did he study for a decade or more? I'm ready to do the same, but its interesting to know it from a real life surgeons perspective. Plus, I heard that it's difficult because you have to get loans for uni and you wont start earning until a lot later? Is it true that you can't get a lot of free/social life because duty and responsibilities interfere with it a lot? Also, I hope you don't mind me asking this...would you say that he spends a lot of time with you as a family or that his job gets in the way? I myself feel like family and friends are a big part of my life, and I'd like have my own family in the future, so as a career I would want to make sure that I can still give my time to those areas in my life as well. I hope I'm not bombarding you with questions...😊

@@lunabrights4073 my dad studied medicine in Russia so it's different from the USA, he was in university for 6 years instead of 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school then 7 years of internship and 2 years of fellowship in Minnesota. During internship and fellowship you do get a payed even though it's considered studying so repaying student loans is possible. He doesn't have a lot of social life/family time but then again he chooses to take more responsibilities on himself like being chief resident and publishing articles, it's hard but possible to balance your career as a cardiothoracic surgeon and social life. I know a cardiothoracic surgeon that is also a single mother and she manage to support her 2 kids financially and have enough time to take care of them. Still, you do have to be very efficient and productive to do all of that and you'll probably have to sacrifice something in different areas of your life. I've always wanted to be in the medical field, it was not until middle school I decided that I would become a surgeon. My backup would be anesthesiologist lol, as close to the O.R as I can get. I'm a fan of Greys Anatomy, but notice all the errors. I don't use the show as an inspiration either. So don't worry, I'm not gonna fall in love with a patient and cut their L-Vad wire so they are moved up the transplant list. [That happened in the show] I do my own research and learn what goes down in the surgery realm. The idea of being able to go into the complex areas of the body to save a life is amazing. There are times where things go wrong, but we have to remember we aren't Jesus 😂. I'm a freshman in highschool about to entire second semester. My grades are not the best of the best, but just seeing my grades improve from 1st to 2nd quarter is pushing me improve more. I will succeed :D

I'm in 8th grade and I have decided to become a general surgery and have basically planned out my life- I live in India so I have to pass a test called NEET after my school graduation which will allow my admission into medical schools depending on my rank in this exam. The only problem is I wanna do my master's abroad either in Canada or South Korea but graduating from a prestigious college is crucial so I have to get into AIIMS otherwise there is less than a 50% chance of me being able to go abroad as that is the only top medical college in India in my opinion-

I hope you make ‘so you want to be a Pathologist’ 🙏🙏🙏
@aldoperdomo8035 жыл бұрын
Hey, i can tell you a little about being a pathologist. I've been working as a medical scientist in anatomical pathology for the past 10 years, predominantly working alongside 50+ different specialised histopathologists in one of the leading pathology companies in Australia. Anatomical pathology is indeed an interesting field, especially when you come across interesting and rare conditions and seeing the cellular morphology under the microscope. One of the things which these pathologists have told me is that having good pattern recognition skills will take you far in the pathology world, this is because at the cellular level, each tissue type looks exactly the same, and what you're looking for is for any differences in the following that deviates from normal - cell morphology - nuclei detail - cytoplasmic detail ( parts of the cytoplasm containing RNA stains purple, whilst the rest of the cytoplasm stains pink in a H&E stain) among other cell details. When i ask the pathologists why they decided pathology, by far, the most common answer i received was "I hated talking to/ dealing with patients", whilst others say that they enjoy the complexity of looking at the cells and playing as a detective to discover what is wrong with the patient. in terms of lifestyle, most enjoy the lifestyle since it doesn't require them rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night, and it also allows them to have a life and spend adequate time with their family. the cons of being a pathologist (at least in my view) - you're stuck in a room, sitting behind a desk, looking under a microscope day in and day out - a lot of other health professions (particularly surgeons when you go out to do a frozen section (intra-operative diagnosis/ assessment)) don't consider you a specialist doctor. At least that's what happens here in Australia, i can't speak about other countries. i hope that helps you a little and hope it gives you a very very brief overview of anatomical pathology, i can't necessarily speak about the other parts of pathology like haematology, since i have not worked with haematologists or other pathology specialists.

@@bimiki Hey, I'm so sorry, but i'm not a pathologist nor a doctor (yet). I Just happen to be working in the pathology field and have had the opportunity to be mentored by these pathologists. I'm not certain how much the pathologists get paid, it is not something i have discussed with them. As far as the education goes, in Australia it is 5 years of pathology training from RCPA after medical school, and a fellowship may be undertaken afterwards, however, i only know of 3 registrars that have taken this option. Hope that helps

Hi, my name is Elijah Jones, I'm 19 years old and I would be interested in becoming a surgeon as my ambition in life. My mom was encouraging me and asked if I wanted to become a surgeon one time, then I was like no, but after watching this video about the job and risks of being a surgeon, I decided that it seems quite interesting to be in that position. So in conclusion, I want to go to college in order to pursue a career and get a degree in surgery.

Another potential limitation of being a surgeon is there are activities one may have to refrain from participating in due to the risk of damaging the hands. This includes things like changing a tire because turning the lug wrench could damage the hands. A surgeon (or anyone else) may want to keep an impact wrench in his/her car in case the need to change a tire occurs.
