John's first musical performance was on a chromatic harmonica, so we know he could play one, however the one he had on stage with The Beatles looks like a diatonic, but sounds like there's different notes in the lowest octave than the typical Hohner layout. Either that or he had amazing bending technique.

Per Pat Missin’s website, John Lennon was either using a low-tuned C harp or it was a regular C chromatic. But, as you said, it’s pretty hard to tell just from listening to the recording.

This is great Liam. Thanks! Could you please do a second lesson for this song - like you did for Love Me Do - where you explore the bridge? Or just add the tabs as a response to my comment. The notes for “I’ve got arms that long to hold you, etc.” are tricky - seems to have half and whole step 3 bends plus other notes I can’t figure out. Maybe a full step 2 bend as well. Like me, Im sure all your fans would appreciate your expertise & guidance. Thanks awfully amigo.

Wish I knew what harp he used. Hard to believe that there was even a low F harmonica 55 years ago. Maybe but I have my doubts. Keep up the good work. Thanks a lot.

There were low-tuned harps back then. For example, the Hohner Echo Vamper in the key of E that John used on “Please Please Me” was tuned one octave below a standard E harp. (Side note: Echo Vamper was the European market version of the Hohner Marine Band.)

I'm using a Hohner 364 Solo Tuned and it has it all on there. Don't know when the Solo Tuned 364 came out, he may have been using one or using a chromatic?

What’s the main difference between an F snd a low F? Which one is better for this song? Which one is more versatile?

Hi ElGarza, they're the same note layout but an octave apart so you'll get a deeper sound with the lower one. You can follow the same tabs with either. I really like low harps because they make even the highest notes on the instrument sound nice :) Hope this answers your question! Cheers. Liam

Don't worry, Liam, it's definitely right. But the other problem with the C harp is that, even if you get that 3 whole step bend to sound in tune, as you did the last time, it's still muted and therefore doesn't have the same tone as the other notes. That's what bothers me about diatonics, especially in non-blues songs.

Yeah, it's always a problem with diatonics. One thing I love about playing non-blues using bends is that it really helps improve the bends because it's such a tough job to make them clean and sweet-sounding, so when you return to the blues your bends are better than ever. It's a great practice method. Cheers, Liam

Instead of practicing my bends, which I should do, whenever I feel the notes aren't clean I grab my chromatic, and, voila, all the notes sound the same, without any effort!

@@Learntheharmonica Hello Liam, "the Snakeman" Arvid Munthe here from Norway. You used either the 'F harp' or the 'C harp' and got into a little trouble with the sound quality of the bent tone. Here is my correct solution. Beatles used both harps. At the same time. I just use slot 4 - 5 and 6 on the 'C Harp' and only slot 2 on the G harp for that last note. I tape over all the other slots and tape the two harps together so they function as a double barrel harp. Then it's just so easy and all tones come out crystal clear. I think this is what Beatles did. My harps are: Seydel 1847 Silver (hvite core). Cheers and thanks for great inspiration :-)
