when buying a house in Sweden the seller is responsible for the cost for hidden faults and defects for 10 years that is not visible for the buyer to see when inspecting the house before buying. I own a house here in Sweden myself, so I was shocked to see all the hidden damage to the inner walls. You could not have known this fact before renovating. I do hope you will be happy in your new home and it already looks great. I wish you all the best.

Great idea reusing the old beams. Not only because it matches the house, but the wood itself is also much more robust than anything else you'd be able to find. You could pump water from the lake or re-purpose the old well. Would require some filtration and a bit of digging but wouldn't be too terribly expensive. Looking forward to seeing how you tackle all the issues that come with the house. Welcome to the country!
@noorderling6 ай бұрын
Thanks ! The old beams are great. A lot denser and more heavy then " new" wood and that's probably why the last so long without any problems.
@wertywerrtyson55295 ай бұрын
@@noorderlingYes I learned in my building physics course here in Sweden that quality has really gone down in wood compared to the old days. It’s about mass market and economics of scale now. Grow fast and sell fast. Made to last decades not centuries.

It is a very "authentic" way to do it too! A lot of these century old log cabins were built using "recycled" wood from previous structures.

Wow, great work sir. You can tell that that's going to be one solid house when you're done. A beam from 1916 😮 In Ireland a beam would rot within a few years with our damp climate. I spent some time in Styrsö and I guess your winters are cold but mostly dry. Looking forward to your next video.

I wonder how you will manage winter. Without electricity you’ll be burning wood pretty much 24/7 to keep the heat unless you have very good insulation. Myself and my parents use ”luftvärmepump” which is like a reverse AC because they are fairly cheap and very efficient typically giving you about 4-5kw of heat for 1kw of power but you need electricity for that to work and the further up north you are the colder the winters which lowers efficiency. Already here in the middle south during the coldest days mine had to work mostly had defrosting the outside unit rather than heating.

Love your videos! Thank you for posting!! My mind wonders while watching - Would something like the following be useful: if one were to run a covered (protected from snow and weather) channel from just under the roof eve on one side of the house down, ending just under the house while creating the exact same thing on the opposite side of the home could it allow enough ventilation through the harsher months to keep the subfloor etc from doing this in the future? A solar fan could be placed in each channel with one pulling and the other pushing for a bit more air. Just thoughts that run through my mind.
@noorderling6 ай бұрын
What an interesting idea. I've learnt very recent that in some houses that is exactly what they do, using a mechanical ventilation system. But the temperature difference alone between sub floor and roof should be enough to create an airflow 🤔 It doesn't need much , little air flow would suffice

Speaking of the year on the log....It always feels like a fun idea to leave messages for the future when doing major renovations, so feel free to write your name and year in some wall, for example, for future owners to find in 100 years...or leave a note with more detailed information. Where are you guys from?

Please use respirators and eye protection. wood is not that bad, but there is fungi and more importaintly, rat/mice piss and extrement. You can die from exposure. Sorkfeber (nephropathia epidemica) is not to be ignored. Same with wood piles and everywhere rat poo is should be handled carefully.
