Just can' beat getting the window seat in the Magpie overlooking the quayside.Tucking into your fish, chips, peas and tartare sauce. Slice of b & b. Mug of tea. Superb.Then out for a sea trip on the pirate ship. Then perhaps a run up the steps to the Abbey to settle it down. Before long the sea air has worked its magic. God I'm hungry.

So remember folks sitting in the Magpie eating your fish and chips.The fish has travelled over 300 miles overnights on a refrigerated lorry from Peterhead Scotland.not exactly locally caught fish,??
@tsuchan4 жыл бұрын
No, I thought that was interesting. Particularly because Whitby has long been notorious for landing almost no fish because the landing duties are so high. So that solves a mystery for me. It doesn't make me think any less of the fish, and I didn't know Lockers caught fish in Scotland and brought it back to Whitby post-haste for processing. It seems that's what defines a Whitby Fish. But fair-does... the fish they catch swim far and wide, and Lockers have a really efficient operation, and the fish tastes sensational.

Those are the palest chips Iv'e ever seen, you need to brown them a bit if you want some flavor.

Spot on Terry Tytula cannot stand under cooked chips .

Don't agree, chips need to cook just to the point they start to brown, after which the potato taste rapidly deteriorates and the oil becomes harsh. These look crisp, fresh tasting and perfect.

Would not recommend the magpie, was here last week, what a let down. Didn't get the mushy peas I ordered and payed for, fish was no bigger than 6 inches long and mainly batter, the chips were OK but on the whole very disappointed and expensive. Try Trenchers.

I don't believe you. I think you're a Trenchers plant. I've been to Trenchers when they had a 2-for-1 and I know what they serve. My mother generally orders a Small Fish & Chips at Magpie, and what she gets is a real, decent portion which really fills her up. By contrast, the Small Fish & Chips at Trenchers was an insult, and I'll never willingly go there again. It was like a parody. It was the size of a single fish bit you'd get at Silver Street Fisheries, with a few chips, served on a side plate. And the chips are almost white. Whenever I go out for a meal, I think myself around all the restaurants in Whitby, and nearly always decide on the Magpie, because it's just so damned good. Every time.

@@tsuchan I don't really care if you believe me to be honest and I can't comment on Trenchers as I haven't been to it but I will the next time I'm in Whitby cos magpie was as I described it..... Crap.
@tsuchan4 жыл бұрын
@@micklowery1497 He didn't even go to Magpie Cafe, he went to Magpie takeaway, which is very different. It isn't crap, but it isn't anywhere near as good. And yet he compared it to two restaurants. The Fisherman's Wife doesn't do takeaway - it's only a restaurant. And Trencher's has a takeaway, but he talked about taking his family there in a context that sounded like it had to be the restaurant. If he'd been to the famous Magpie Cafe, fair do's. But he hadn't. And Magpie takeaway, which is *relatively* new, isn't famous at all.
@micklowery14974 жыл бұрын
@@tsuchan my mistake then, it was the magpie takeaway that I went to and as I've said, my experience wasn't great, magpie cafe might be different but going off the takeaway I won't be trying it. Each to their own though eh?
@tsuchan4 жыл бұрын
@@micklowery1497 Sure. I've had a few negative experiences with the takeaway myself; although more about the service than the food. The worst one really upset me. They serve F&C in some really weak cardboard boxes. The guy in front of me one time put plenty of vinegar on his chips and before he was out of the shop the bottom was falling-out of the box. He asked, and they snapped that he could have another box, but he'd have to pay 45p for it. I left on that occasion, because it was just unreasonable and unfair. The guy was really shocked, and he paid-up. I'd have dumped the F&C over the counter and demanded my money back. The cafe themselves are the exact opposite. But even then, I agree: each to his own... even Trenchers has its followers. Though I would recommend next to try Hadleys on Bridge Street to eat in. Or the new one - Papas - which is where the NatWest Bank used to be, at the end of Baxtergate. For takeaway I'd recommend Silver Street Fisheries, but in the winter their opening times are pretty sparse.
