Bispham Kitchen in Blackpool at the top of Redbank road is my No1 for fish and chips. Magpie in Whitby id give 9/10 my opinion.

Back in the 60's and 70's Dad bought us all fish and chips (and 'scratchings') every Friday from Tommy Albutt's chip shop in Worcester Road, Bromsgrove. As Tommy got older, he chose to open less and less frequently, but always had queues in his shop. Back then, he cooked fresh potatoes and fish in real batter fried in beef dripping. All too unhealthy for today's tastes..... Ask any older person round here which was the best chip shop in the town. Tommy was a cheerful and friendly character, I still remember him with fondness.

To be fair the best fish I've ever had was purchased at the magpie takeaway. So fresh crispy and clean looking. The quayside was good there too.

My Nan used to cook in the magpie when I was a child. Great chippy but by far the best in whitby is royal fisheries (fuscos) my family from whitby would always take us there. It's a must visit if you come back up here 👍

The Fish & Chips in The Magpie Chippy Whitby was worth traveling over the Humber for. I've never seen Fish look that white & look more like Chicken! And the Batter looked super crispy! The Chips looked amazing most Chippys I've been to the chips have those Brown bits & rather Squashed looking probably not fresh cooked! Looks a really comfy Chippy cafe too, exp as it looked quite a dull day then Tim. Really excited about seeing you in Whitby on Sunday 😊

@@WalkWithMeTim yes most fish looks more like fillets of Fish with those spaces that fall away. But that Fish looked so solid! I bet it was very filling that Fish & the Chips too as they looked enormous when you held them up to the camera! Definitely more of a Chippy Cafe feel there rather than a Fish & Chippy Restaurant. I would certainly go to The Magpie Cafe if I was every lucky enough to be in Whitby!

Well Tim after your recommendation we visited the magpie cafe today..only queued for 20mins to get in and was Sat upstairs, this place is vast and must say you were right the fish & chips, mushy pies & pot of tea (tea leaves) was absolutely delicious top notch..even spoke to our lady server and she said she served you when you came in to do your video..Keep up the good work mate..👍

We've been visiting the Magpie for a few years now. Travelling from Stafford for a short stay in Whitby each year. The fish and chips really are the best and the quality is the same every time we visit. I've also had their fish pie which is also delicious. The staff are always very friendly and welcoming. Our first visit was in 2014 and we were there recently at the end of September 2022. We missed going during the lockdowns and also when the building was gutted by a fire. We love watching your walks Tim. I lived in Suffolk for 20 years and regularly visit the Norfolk coast (Cley, Wells, Overstrand and Mundesley in particular.) Also enjoyed your visit to Sandbanks. Our car was actually in the Sandcastles car park behind you when you spoke about the building. You're right, it was a gorgeous building and the apartment we rented was fantastic. A real treat as we were there for my daughter's wedding. Our second best fish and chips would be at The Harbour Inn at Southwold.

My Grandfather was a fishmonger all his life he would only ever buy Whitby fish. I've never tasted cod or haddock like he sold, until we tried The Magpie. We've been going to Whitby over 25yrs and tried the lot, nobody comes close to the The Magpie imo.👌

Whilst the interior of Trenchers is more aesthetic than The Mapie Cafe, I have to say the fish and chips, plus the mushy peas and tatar sauce in the Magpie Cafe looked so much more appealing and I thought looked better quality. That batter and fish looked amazing! I can't comment on taste YET! but fond of Whitby so hoping to visit sometime soon. Having owned a tearoom, I loved how the Magpie teapots etc where SO super clean and shiny. Not many cafes pride themselves on this and I think they should. Shows excellent attention to detail and the owners care about there customers experience. Loved the quirky teaset items too....a stainless steel milk pale for the milk!. Well impressed. Xx

Another great video Tim in one of our favourite places to visit when we get over to the UK. We have had fish and chips in Whitby but not at the Magpie Cafe. It looks a great meal. We will definitely visit if we ever make it back to the UK. I love Mushy Peas having grown up in Manchester but Patrick being an aussie not a fan of them (lol),

I’ve eaten at the Magpie several times and found their fish and chips (cod) to be excellent. Eating in the restaurant is best, so you can relax. I don’t think being under attack by a million seagulls is quite as relaxing😉. That cod looked fabulous, so white and flakey. Oh I can’t wait to get to Whitby again!

Aah, Whitby! This brings back some lovely memories of childhood caravan holidays here - and going to The Magpie as a treat. Yorkshire fish and chips are traditionally fried in beef dripping, which is why they tend to taste better (crisper and drier as a result). I'd also recommend Maid Marion's in nearby Robin Hood's Bay - you can't beat them when eating fresh chips out the paper, sat on a bench, looking out to sea!

We went to Whitby at the beginning of October for the weekend. We ate at the Magpie Cafe each day. Between us we tried the battered cod, poached lemon sole, scampi and battered woof. All were beautiful fish and the chips too. It even said the type of potato they were frying that day. Our favouite place to eat. 10/10 from us.

Our favorite is Kays Fish & Chips in Cleveleys. Infact if you haven't already been Tim Cleveleys is a lovely resort to visit the next time you're in the Blackpool area. We really enjoy your videos. This was such a great watch discovering a chippy in Yorkshire that sells cod. There's another KZbinr that loves his fish and chips but always goes to chippies that only sell haddock that I personally do not like , there's no substitute for cod . Expensive I thought but it was in a tourist hotspot so to be expected. In fairness to this café it did look pretty awesome 👍

Well you have done very well to get a table in there so easily folk are normally queueing down the harbour from opening to closing time in the season. It's definitely a solid 10 for what you had without a doubt. I wonder what that place would sell for if it was ever put on the open market.

I was born here and after working abroad for some years, I have now returned and live in my family home in the town. (My dad was a fishing boat owner/skipper here for all his life.) We always go to the Magpie for eat in fish and chips and all our relatives from away want to eat there too when they visit. But we always get take-out fish and chips to eat at home from Royal Fisheries on Baxtergate - both places are without a doubt super, in my opinion.

Good video and review. I have to disagree about mushy peas though +the clue is in the name - mushy, not puree. The peas you had look ideal to me - I expect to have plenty of chew potential in mushy peas, and what you showed us looked perfect.

I used to go Whitby every year as a kid on holiday and the magpie was always queued of an evening without fail. The jolly sailor used to be the place to go for food used to go most evenings now it's just generic pub rubbish. Not knocking easy pub grub but they did good home made food loved the steak and ale pie.

I've just been to Whitby this weekend gone, and had such a lovely time! My friend recommended The Magpie after i told her i was about to go find somewhere to have fish and chips. I walked in at about 4 thinking it was going to be busy and i'd be turned away but i got in no problem which i was surprised about. i went for the regular 9oz Haddock and chips, with a curry sauce and a pint of lager. £23.70. 15.95 for the F&C ,1.75 for the curry and 6 for the beer. Was lovely, no complaints at all. Best in the country, im not convinced. But maybe im just too used to my local fish and chip shop. Biggest shock of the trip was telling people it was 5 1/2 hours from Lowestoft and not just down the road an hour or so like everyone around here seems to think! Definitely planning on going back though, preferably during the Goth Weekend. Keep up the good work Tim!

@@andrewmonument8847 At one time I lived near near Battersby Junction, so that railway line was really well-placed for me! I used to go to South Park 6th Form College (sadly closed years ago), so on my way home I got the college bus to Nunthorpe then the train out to Battersby Jct. Then at Battersby Junction the train changed direction, so the driver had to get out and walk to the cab at the opposite end. When I was really little my nan used to take me on the train from Middlesbrough to Whitby for a day out. What a lovely town Whitby is.

@@DeannaAllison Same happens even today with Battersby... The train to Whitby still 'reverses' out, after the driver has changed ends. Whenever I go to Whitby, I usually sit with my back to the direction of travel from Middlesbrough... so I'm the 'right way round' after Battersby. I must get back to Whitby for a visit - haven't been there since before COVID days.

Really. I’m in Australia and I do it all the time. You can actually buy Batchelors mushy peas in the British imported section at Coles and Woolworths. When you bring the fish and chips home just open a can and warm it up.

We went to Scarborough on holiday this summer and made the trip to Whitby twice that week primarily to enjoy the Magpie. Best fish and chips I've had. Sadly living in Suffolk it's a long way to go, none of the chip shops round here compare! Keep up the good work Tim, really enjoy your content.

@@lemonie2000 I recommend Micks fish and chips always in my opinion pretty good. The codfather in town is also ment to be really good and I believe has won awards so must be the case. I have only had chips from there and pretty good. Obviously it's not by the sea but they are still very good.

Your review almost made me sic.... with envy! Here in New Zealand, we don't get the type of potatoes needed to make good chips. Hard to get cod, other types of fish just don't do it. As for mushy peas. You can get tinned ones from UK but hardly ever in fish and chip shops. Might be worth returning to UK just for the fish and chips. Here, most fish & chips are part of a Chinese take away or other Asian take away, they just don't know how to make "Propper" fish & chips.

My wife and I visited whitby a few years ago and aimed to eat at magpie restaurant but the queue was down the road! So we went to one just down the road, the name escapes me, but it was painted green, if that helps! It was excellent! I love haddock and it was hanging off the plate.

Best fish and chips ive ever had is Cosby Leicestershire and also Cromer No1 fish and Chips, Ah Whitby I remember when I stayed there and saw a film crew outside the Magpie it was Gwenyth Paltrow they were filming persuasion, Your fish and chips is just how I like it..Its one of my favourite dishes proper fish and chips done right.
