Not combing my hair, and wearing it in that same style for at least a week, is where I would see the MOST growth. This video was confirmation for my hair journey.

I know this is an old video, but I see that too. I cut my hair to chin length in February. I have gained at least three inches since then. I have been wearing a protective style all summer which doesn't require a lot of manipulation to my hair.

Her hair is GORGEOUS! I can attest to the "leave it alone and it will grow" method. I had locs for 8 yrs and they were down my back. No one in my immediate family ever had hair that long and neither did either of my grand parents. So, I'd have to say that good hair care and little manipulation worked for me. I am now Big Chopped for the 3rd time in my life to make a run at natural hair unloc'd. Thank you for this wonderful interview and also for showing Kamisha's scalp bc ppl need to see that it is possible to grow our hair long even if we "break the rules"...But we must be patient and not do things that harm our hair! (Glad to hear from the sister below who has wonderful length even with lupus and challenges!) If you believe...ALL THINGS are possible!

This video reemphasizes the face that hair length is a matter of genetics. Some people can use vasoline, high heat, fine tooth combs and really treat their hair bad yet it flourishes while others follow the "Natural hair care rules" to a T and their hair never looks "right" or never grows very fast. It also shows that these rules don't apply across the board and you should find what works for your own hair even if its gas station oil.

I hear you on that one. My hair is so thick, not in a good way, that I Have to relax just to pass a comb through it. Wish I could go natural but I could never manage it. Genetics is very important. I've seen people use the best products and their hair is wiry and doesn't grow longer than 3 inches in their lifetime. Others treat it like crap and their hair just keeps on growing. I just want mine to be manageable which it never is. Each time I buy a comb my hubby prays for it. Lol

+hear fan +naturegirl2110 Thank you for watching ladies....I would just emphasize that there are no absolute rules, but rather "best practices" when it comes to healthy hair - because simply put, everyone's hair is different. I did not treat my hair badly prior to my hair journey. Yes, my products likely contained alcohol, sulfate, mineral oil and other natural hair no-nos. But what was in my favor was that I only touched my hair once a week, kept my hair moisturized, swore by low manipulation and protective styling, always deep conditioned and trimmed when needed. Genetics play a role in the rate at which your hair grows and your hair texture, color, etc. But genetics play NO part in retaining length....everyone's hair grows, you must implement practices that will help YOU retain your length, whatever that may be. To me, the "best products" don't exist - rather, there are products that my hair loves and responds to. I appreciate your honesty and candor and happy to hear that someone else is breaking combs right along with me!! LOL

People who do A LOT to their hair, think she is with holding information or being deceitful..but in all reality.. the less you do the more likely your hair will flourish in the end.. if you can go without trying to be in style and keep up with the latest hair fads.. and keep your hands out of your head unless it's a moisturizing or oil treatment.. there is no telling how long your hair can grow. I have had several fades and many steps backwards and have finally waved the white flag.. I keep a wash and go and make sure to snip any split ends.. massage your scalp and just find whichever staple products that works for you.. less is more

I thought it was based on monthly growth.Does it actually differ from person to person? :( I'm trying to grow my hair since I bleached it and it was so damaged I had to cut it and I have many layers now and it's shoulder length again.Everyone keeps saying that hair only grows half an inch a month but there's gotta be a loop or some tricks to growing it fast
@carameldale4218
@carameldale4218 7 жыл бұрын
Burrito Senpai its both genetics and how you take care of your hair. If it is badly bleached, get the dead ends off first. If the damage is extensive and too much to cut off, do intensive protein and moisture treatments to maintain the length until the healthy hair grows out long enough. Also, everyone is different. I grow a minimum of a half inch a month, and inch if I put some care into it, and more if I use growth aids. My hair particularly likes sulfur but dislikes biotin. Try things until you find what works.

I gasped when she stated that she used a fine tooth comb & didn't comb from the bottom up. If that's not the privilege of good genetics, I don't know what is - gotta agree with most on here in regards to that. Might sound a little crazy, but I think her actual hair stands are naturally thicker and can therefore tolerate some of the products and styling methods she mentioned that would likely break most of our hair.

I noticed that I was looking at some Indian women with long hair most of them have very dark hair but when it comes to black women and they beautiful hair they always talkin about protective styling and putting on a wig and putting on weaves but the Indian women who have skin that is darker than some of us African Americans but beautiful skin also Brown beautiful skin and no one ever asked them what they use what they you know they asked them about oils and things like that they talk about products that they use that comes from the green trees or leaves or but with African-American they asking us if we use perm do you have any mixed people in your family know is that you take care of your hair like this young lady he said anyting keeps her hair healthy so she's just one of the very lucky ones that she doesn't have to use products to help her hair stay healthy but yes they always asking us as black Americans what do we use how do we use it when do we use it no we all as black women can grow hair also and we don't have to have protective styling because once you grow your hair to the length that you want to continue to take care of it you don't go and put a perm in it you continue to take care of it I do blow dry my hair on the cool setting then I will every once in awhile to see my length that I'm retaining I will use a flat iron but I make sure that I use heat control products so you know I was here gross we just have to take care of it more carefully so it won't break or dry out

It's not that she's lucky...i see where she's coming from. People always think products and technique is what grows hair. It's not... you retain length when you leave your hair alone. Manipulation is what causes breakage...and as she said she wears her hair in a bun all week. She doesn't even do twistouts which can cause tangling for alot of people. She doesnt shampoo often which can help retain length also.

This is an old vid but it just showed up in my recommended. But "the secret" to retaining length and such is simply to stay out of your hair, apply minimal heat, ease up on the unnecessary products and find out what your hair likes and needs. I am currently at bra strap length and I really just went back to taking care of my hair like when I was a kid. My hair was long and thick and my mom wasn't worried about no poo or curly girl method or anything else lol. I keep my hair braided, don't comb it that much, don't over wash and don't use a lot of products either.

I wash my hair more often than was discussed -- way more often, and I wear it pulled back for work and loose the rest of the time, especially for bed -- but I'm trying co-washing (had to Google it, lol!) for the first time and there's just so much common sense said here that I really believe most women can learn something from this vid and benefit from it. She should make her own deep conditioner! Mayo, plain yogurt and a bit of olive oil. Warm it up, wrap it up rinse it out. Works for my baby! I especially love that this interview wasn't about telling all women that they can grow the same hair length. It was mostly all about health and that's what it should always be about, no matter what length you have. Genetics does play a role.

She has very pretty hair but I dont think it has anything to do with the products she uses. It is probably just genetics. my mother's hair is the same length. No matter how short she cuts it- as long as she takes care of it, (sometimes even if she doesn't) it will always grow back to her original length. *KanyeShrug..

Miss J. Miss J., not the Kanye Shrug!! LOL...seriously, for me, less is more for hair and I had to learn that. I agree, no product has contributed to my growth - none. there are alot of people who don't use good products but still have naturally long beautiful hair like hers. If you want it long and healthy, you'll get it there. i don't really think genetics come into play anywhere but things like growth rate, porosity and things of that nature. she has long hair because the things she did worked for her hair, so idk what everyone else is talking about.

SO...she does the opposite of what the "proper hair care regime stipulates!" This goes to show that product lines know how to target desperate ethnicities when it comes to growing hair long & FAST! She basically just shut a lot of KZbinr's down! The reality of it is...what works for you, works for you and YES genetics play a huge role in ur hairs growth potential. All those expensive products out there still might not be the end of all end. Sometimes the cheaper products works just fine...but u need to be in good health and LEAVE UR HEAD ALONE!

I totally agree with all you're saying. I had heat damaged my curls though, and when I tried a protein treatment it instantly revived my curls back. I was so amazed! Lots of stuff we can find in our kitchen plays a vital role in having healthy hair that grow. Less heat from those flat irons and curling wands really grew my hair fast. I chopped it off recently in March where it wasn't neck length, now it is a bit pass my shoulders.

Your response is EXACTLY Right!! I look at some KZbin videos about Black hair products & hair and it seems like a big science experiment!! Like our hair is so difficult to handle. And we purchase all them products mostly made and produce by Caucasus. This video shows that simple and to the point, one can get the same results, if not better.

+musiclover1971 So you had me at genetics! If you follow me on social media you already now how I feel about that word. My friend, focus on healthy hair and proper hair care and you will see growth, promise! Yes, genetics play a role in the rate at which your hair grows and your hair texture, color, etc. But the average person's hair grows at least 4 inches a year. If you are not seeing growth, that means you are not retaining length. This is where genetics plays NO part....you must implement practices that will help you retain your length. Don't be discouraged...thank you for watching.

I love this video! And the reason I love it is because her hair regimen is very impromptu and not "cast in stone". What I have learned on this Healthy Hair journey is you have to do what works best for your hair. For instance....my hair works better with a lil heat as opposed to no heat at all. Ie, I blow dry after I wash. I love products that contain peppermint. I think I notice more growth when use them. On the other hand, my daughter gets maximum growth from products that contain carrot oil. Lol@ not being able to find the wide tooth comb. THAT IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE! I use the same cheap comb she described...although I do comb from the bottom. I just think this natural hair journey is subjetable and the key is finding what works best for you.

hi! I just want to say, my hair grew midback lenght in 3 years and I used silicones, sulfates, minerals, I used combs, ditangled my hair while dry, coloured, bleached and used heat more than 3 times a year. The secrect to growing long hair is knowing your hair limits and what your hair can stand and what it likes. I dont heat and colour often and I dont always use a heat protectant, I have never experienced heat damage. I do all this because I know what my hair likes and what it doesnt and how much of what it can take. To help your hair grow you have to listen to your hair, is that simple. I just found this video today, I have a 16 month old, and no time to go grocery shopping and read all the ingredients in a bottle, I have no time to Do DIY deep conditioners and no time for a regime that takes all day. thanks for keeping this real and showing that is not bad not to follow the "rules" as long as it works for you and you aren't hurting anybody.

Enjoyed this video, ya'll were having fun! :) Other than low manipulation, I cant help but think that it really helps that she didn't have years and years of relaxers damaging her scalp. A lot of us who decide to go natural have had years of chemicals beforehand (took my scalp years to recover :/ Having said that some ppl's hair grows quite long with relaxers! Her advice at the end makes sense to just do what works for you and stick with it :)

I think this video really proves the power of low manipulation styles. She said she would rock one style all week and not touch it, wrap it at night and leave it alone! I'm so motivated! I've also realized this in my journey, in the beginning we want to do the most, hand always in our hair to restyle and all these things we think are good for our hair, and they are but.......leaving your hair alone and protected 90%of the time works wonders! It is a sacrifice though, especially if you're used to looking amazing with new hair styles every other day.....it is so worth it though. When you've been rockin a boring bun forever goin crazy then one day you take your hair down and BAM its waist length😆

Sorry this is really long, I got excited seeing a black female with this much length! 😄😄 Omg!!!!!!!! I hope to get there.... I just started my healthy hair journey like a year or so ago and still trying to find the absolute perfect products for my hair. I'm slowly getting there. My goal is to get to your friend's length or at least a little bit lower than midback. Right now I have box braids to gain length without me having to touch it every day and I have until the end of the month to see where I'm at. What tips can you both give me? I moisturize every few days when my scalp feels like it's going to flake soon, I use extra virgin olive oil, Africa's Best herbal oil, and the Cantu Shea butter products. And when my hair is our I do Bantu knots or two strand twists.

Loved it!! Ive noticed for years that women who do nothing to their hair have more of it. Lol. Washing once a month may sound crazy but if u can get away with it helps to retain more length because its less detangling and manipulation. Its why I went to once every 2 or 3 weeks.

For all the people saying it's genetics let me give you a scoop. EVERYONE (including black women) can grow long hair. It's our hair practices that prevent the hair from maintaining the growth we see each month. The key thing to her hair health is she has been natural her whole life AND low manipulation. I had a friend from Belize and she had very beautiful hair which was relaxed and very long. She had a very simple routine as well and used all the new no-no products. The key to her hair growth was she rinsed it with water everyday (moisture) and left her cheapie conditioner in and bunned it. We were in the military. I started to do the same thing and my hair grew really long as well. So LOW MANIPULATION and moisture is the key. Which this young lady gets a lot of with her oils. Gorgeous hair and I love the interviewers glasses. :-)

I'm pretty sure she's just genetically prone to grow beautiful hair like that...It's kind of like body type...you're genetically predisposed to being built a certain way, of course with dedication to a workout regimen, you can alter your body shape and it's the same with how we grow hair or the lack of...sorry, there are no short cuts guys, you're either predisposed to having beautiful hair or you just make do with what your genetics have given you! Love yourselves regardless. Great video...thanks for sharing, she's beautiful!

Michaela no. The media has warped western culture (American/Canadians/U.K etc) into believing our hair can't grow mainly due to Black Americans in the 20th Century wanting "straight hair" or hair that resembles the idiotic phrase "good hair". So for decades they used harmful hot irons & TOXIC relaxers that many didn't know how to use properly and for the majority, it caused slow growth and immense breakage. Thank GOD more and more blacks around the world are becoming more conscious of what's right for OUR needs and not how main(white) society thinks we should look.

Back to the basics for me. Just bought a steamer because I'm protein sens. and low porosity hair and I hoped that would make my hair "so soft and manageable" like everyone was saying. That thing didn't do much of anything. My hair tangles at the slightest hint of protein and it is always dry. I used to use regular brown eco gel every day slicking my hair back in a bun and my hair was growing like crazy. Then I went crazy chopping it off and got locks. 10 years later here I am with APL hair and buying willy nilly products that most of the time SUCK.

It sounds like we have the same type of hair, I'm still in search (2 years) of some product that can soften these tresses other than a texturizer. This hair is tough and very protein sensitive and very low porosity. Good luck and if you ever find something let me know lol.
