I love this video but I have to make a comment because a lot of these people are really pissing me off. First of all let me just let people know something because people seem to be very ignorant when it comes to talking about women who wear weaves and wigs. My auntie has been wearing wigs for 20 years she's a nurse. She doesn't have time to be doing her hair she's always on the go. Her hair is all the way down her back her hair is longer than mines okay. And she's been wearing wigs no heat no coloring no relaxers no nothing just braid her hair put her wig on and keep it pushin. Just because you wear weaves and wigs do not mean you are bald. And so what if you are a lot of women have issues growing their hair. Some women have hormone imbalance some have alopecia. Some just can't grow their hair the way they want to so they have to give their hair a break maybe it's because of heat damage. And then sometimes we want the option of wearing different colors without putting any chemicals on our hair such as bleach. I'm getting really sick and tired of people trying to say that you hate yourself as a black woman when you wear a weave lol wtf. But its okay for a white woman to get extensions and wear braids but it's not okay for us. It's always a double standard when it comes to black women and I'm really sick of it doesn't make any sense. Like I don't understand why natural hair people have to hate on people that still wear relaxers hair. Or relax people have something to say about people wearing natural hair calling their hair nappy this shit needs to stop. If you're trying to educate people on trying to grow their natural hair so be it. But why put others down because of what they choose to do to there fucking hair. Somethings may not work for them that works for you. Instead of trying to put people down about wearing weaves and wigs try to educate them and try to uplift them and try to motivate them to wear their natural hair. We've been teased for years and years about having nappy hair and then we do where our hair out you know people want to complain or people want to say why are you relaxing your hair. And why you doing it so why you doing that. I'm grown and I can do what I want to do with my hair. Your opinion is irrelevant because I can go from relaxed I can go from natural.I can do whatever I want to do with my hair because I know how to take care of my hair. Rather it's a perm or if I'm just wearing natural or wearing a weave it's not the weave that's breaking your hair and it's not the wig. If you don't know how to grow your hair and you don't know how to moisturize it and keep it from heat damage and keep it from overly processing with chemicals your hair won't grow. And then on top of that everybody hair is different I'm just saying this because I'm tired of people making rude ass comments. It's unnecessary I know I can't change the world but damn I mean come on now.

+Ihatef8keb1tches I am right with you. I have three girls and doing hair is a lot of work. Thank goodness my oldest figured it out early and helps me. I love the whole transitioning to natural things and I am amazed at all the things I can do with my hair now that natural hairstyles are being embraced. However, it is still a process and I would never knock someone for wearing wigs or weaves because I have been there. Sometimes people do not have time to do their hair. White and Spanish women have extensions, perms, hair club for woman and long tedious routines themselves, yet, no one criticizes everything they do. All I wanted to do was watch a video about how to do my hair and get some tips in the comments and we are still getting ridiculed. smdh!

Since I was a child my hair got stuck at about 15 inches on the crown, 12 inches at the back. Due to having severe allergies I've been unable to use shampoos and conditioners since I was 12. I did get some mediated stuff doc recommended which smells awful and leaves my hair looking like dry straw. I decided to stop using it. I'm now left with using water and vinegar. I'd sometimes used coconut oil so I increased the use. I also included olive oil and almond oil in winter. What I've found out recently is that I can deep condition with just yogurt or pureed banana or coconut milk. I did a patch test with henna so I could try a henna glaze. Luckily I'm not allergic to it so I've had henna. Now for the first time in a long while I'm retaining length. After 3 months of deep conditioning once a week and a henna glaze. I've got to 18 inches on my crown.

There is no such thing as allergy free shampoos. Those are really shampoos that may be free from added colouring or fragrance because those are very common allergens. Some people with allergies are okay with that. I am not. If you're allergic to more than that then these are useless. From what I've heard Whole foods cater for the organic market in the USA. We have a different sent of organic shops in the UK. Organic does not mean allergy free. I'm allergic to the basic shampoo recipe, plus colouring, plus fragrances or scent maskers in unperfumed products, plus the necessary preservatives added to prolong shelf life, plus other added ingredients some of which add texture or thickness n products. I'm also allergic to soap, I can't even use baby soap. I rely on my doctors advice and even so after some years I developed a bad reaction to a prescribed product then had to change products again. I even sometimes have a bad reaction to plain water. Fortunately that doesn't happen daily throughout the year and I now have a cream to help sooth some of the pain when it happens.

Now that's it's snowing and freezing I've been getting into the twist but like you said it takes too long and "AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!!!" . So what I do is 6 twist (mist my hair, add a little pudding all over, then oil my hair and scalp b4 the twist) then in the morning I take them out and separate. It looks like my natural pattern and last 3 days. I do it so my afro dont loo like a curly version of kid from kid n play.

Oh and you are so right I have women come to me for their 6 weekly trim, but if your not using heat all the time and especially now ive seen a few tutorials on looking after African hair and yeah theres really no need to cut your hair all the time, even 3/4 times a year is fine! Because as a race you really do look after your hair, I used to be very naive, I thought u woke up in the morning with this perfect beautiful afro that you could just cornrow or whatever but yeah you all have such beautiful hair especially when its not hidden under a weave, now I'm not bashing the weave, don't bash the weave Charlie lol, but ur hair hunny looked a million times more beautiful than it would have had it been weaved stunning girl, absolutely stunning xx

I literally want to cry because ALL of the things mentioned in this video I literally do. (No heat, apply oil&water,use a wide-tooth comb, moisturize under a protective style etc). Yet I still have 5inches of hair after 4years of being natural. I have never dyed my hair (though its my desire) because I don't want to make this journey more difficult than it is. If someone can tell me what I'm missing that will be of great help, thank you.

A healthy lifestyle and diet play key roles in hair growth. Proper amounts of vitamins and minerals, eating fresh fruits and fresh vegetables while having enough water intake is key as well. Vitamin supplements help but eating right is your absolute best bet! You have to remember to work from within FIRST and externally second. Goodluck :)
@JuanitaPatrick
@JuanitaPatrick 11 жыл бұрын
honestly, fruits and vegetables have never made a difference to my hair. I have the worst diet and its still grown longer than it was when i was relaxed. so i doubt your diet is truly the problem. I would suggest takibg a good hard look at your hair to see whats wrong. Are you always in a constant battle to keep your hair moisturized? Is the ONLY time you see a curl pattern is when your hair is soaking wet? does a lot of hair come out during a detangling session? If this is the case you may want to up the ante where moisture is concerned, and to do that i'd suggest cowashing (or at least using a sulfate free shampoo), find a silicone-free leave in conditioner, and even give the LOC Method a try. These are all greay ways to ensure your hair is never thirsty. On the other hand, you also need to keep your hair strong with a protein treatment every 4-6 weeks. And take care to only style your hair when it's wet/damp to avoid tearing. Do you use a satin cap at night? Are you taking care of any split ends? You may only need to tweak one part of your regimen (or do a complete overhaul depending on whether or not you have good habits in place) but thrle only way to know is to try something new and see how hour hair reacts. I hope thats helps a little

I eat a lot of veggies &some fruits...no fast food for the last 4months,I work out an hour& a half everyday aside the Sabbath...so I KNOW its not mii diet &exercise. I do lose a lot of hair during detangling,I also have never tried a protein treatment. So I will definitely start doing that. Mii shampoos do have sulfates :( .I seal mii ends since its the oldest part of mii hair. Thank u sooo much Juanita. No more sulfates For me :) &I will definitely get on the protein treatments right away. Will give an update in mii hair growth after trying this for 2months or so. Again,thank u. U rock! :)

Hi Akorkor - not sure whether you've had any success yet, but I wanted to share what worked for me. I want to warn you that this is pretty expensive, but it worked. About three years ago I was looking at a lot of natural hair videos like this one. I had a perm at the time. Based on my lifestyle and the logic of how hair grows from the root and retention problems are the reason it doesn't grow for some people, I decided to grow mine using a full head sew-in weave. I told my hairdresser that my goal was to grow out my natural hair, so he was sure to not braid it too tight. I left it in for three months at a time and conditioned my scalp religiously every two weeks. When my natural edges started to become noticeable about two months in, I'd wear it curly so that it blended nicely and covered the edges. Every three months they'd take out my weave, cut off more perm (you wouldn't have to worry about that part) deep condition, and put it back in the same day. I did this for three years. My goal was to have enough length that I could wear it in protective natural styles easily - I wanted to be able to pull it back into a ponytail. I started wearing it out naturally just for a few weeks ago. After a few experiments I've decided to continue growing it by installing two stand twists every couple of weeks, but it's at a nice length now. I'll bet that by wearing sew-ins for a a year you could at least double the length of your hair from five inches to 10 or 12. If that option is too pricey, perhaps cornrows with natural hair weaved in would also work. The only reason I suggest getting extensions is because it can be easier to get a style with almost zero manipulation. Hope this helps!

Do not use a harsh shampoo, deep condition, moisturize and seal with oil (focuse on the ends),use minimum heat, be gentle with your hair (use a wide tooth womb or fingers to detangle.Use protective styles. Protect your hair at night (satin scarf/pillow), if you're relaxed: relax your new growth only and try to stretch the time between your relaxers. Be consistent with your routine. You could actually take advantage of that keep heat off your hair. You could still keep getting weave but when you take it out wash your hair moisturize it cut end if you need to. But you also need let your hair breathe. Also when washing hair massage your scalp. You also need patience weave is used in a lot of protective styles.

I have kinky hair so that is true for me. My hair gets really dry when I constantly put water on it, so I use a shea butter mix (shea butter mixed with several oils) along with water, and I have no problem after that.

talk to your parents about ordering some hair products for your needs. do your research on what you think would be best for your hair. in the mean time, research on youtube some hairstyles you can do yourself so you will no longer have bad hair days! good luck lady

I suggest that you start with moisturizers (liquid moisturizers like Care Free Curl Instant Moisturizer and leave in conditioners - Cantu Shea Butter is AMAZING). These products will help soften your hair. You can then pull your hair into a soft bun and let it rest while you grow out your natural texture. Don't pull it too tight, or torture your edges. Also, alternate between high buns and low buns worn at your neck for variety. This will help you avoid breaking the front of your hair (that's the part that the bun will break) by wearing the same style too much. Try using scrunchies, rather than rubber bands or thin hair bands - even the ouchless kind. Your hair can wrap around the thin material and break. Good luck, honey! I was a foster kid myself, so I feel you.

I had stopped relaxing and as the natural grew, I kept doing protective hairstyles to not show the transition until the natural hair length was enough to cut the relaxed and end up with a TWA. August 2011 was my last relaxer, and my "big chop" was in January 2012. I had 5" of natural hair by that time.

You can get it at Walgreens so you dont need go to a special shop plus I think they are sold quite widley too. Have a look. www.sheamoisture.com/Hair_c_15.html

I just recently did the big chop. I had long relaxed hair for so long that I am so far from used to the look. I've watched so many of your videos and I love all of the advice. I'm still a little unsure of what I should do to my hair to start the natural process. But after watching your videos hopefully I can have the patience to keep a relaxer away from my hair

@MsFlamingFlamer

There are black women with this type of hair texture. Pure black does not necessarily equal 4c (and I find 4c the loveliest hair texture). There are full black women who have looser textures. I am black and a 3c. I met a full blooded Mandinka woman from Gambia with the exact same hair texture and yes she is natural. Please don't put down looser textured hair as not being "authentic black" when the hair is still obviously Afro textured. It's almost like some black people think that all black people are supposed to look one certain type of way when Africa has more genetic diversity than any other continent with over 3000 different ethnicities. Peace

+MsFlamingFlamer how do you know what hair type you have
@MsFlamingFlamer
@MsFlamingFlamer 9 жыл бұрын
+Shakira Harris I am actually not crazy about hair typing. It's just one system and its not perfect. Everyone is different. Knowing my hair's porosity and thickness was more important than my curl pattern. There are charts that can indicate roughly what curl pattern one has. Many people have a variety of curls on their head. Like my head has some 3b and 4a curls but is mostly 3c

+Garweest loas This is a BIG misconception that I feel the need to address since my hair is much like this woman's and I am NOT mixed; at least no more than most African Americans and others of African descent who might have a white ancestor or two in their lineage somewhere. First, the woman says in the comments under the video that she is wearing an old braid out. Braid outs, twist outs, bantu knot outs and other styles can greatly STRETCH your hair and curl pattern. Many of us have great hair elasticity which means it can be stretched, trained, or MANIPULATED; for some of us this is easier than for others. I naturally have mostly 3c hair with some 4a (the woman in the video says she has 4a) and I wear my hair pulled back in a puff ponytail most of the time; not because I want to stretch my hair but because I like the style but guess what? This style and others like it stretch my hair out and therefore stretch my curls and waves. People of African descent all over the world have been stretching their hair for centuries with styles, banding, threading etc. It's not that difficult and it's of course easier if you have a looser texture to begin with but you DO NOT have to be mixed to do this. Some people choose to do this with heat by blow drying and flat ironing their hair and leaving it straight a lot. This will do the same thing; straighten or stretch the hair but many who use heat end up with heat damage if they use heat too much and that basically causes straight pieces that won't get curly again even when they wear their hair curly. Many natural hair women use stretching without heat to keep their hair growing long since the less curl and kink we have, the less chance for breakage. Anyway, just wanted to shed some light on this because I see lots of comments about people being mixed who have looser textures and this is not necessarily the case.

Wow, your hair looks really great. Please note that we will not all retain as much length. hair has 3 growing stages, if you don't cause damage to your hair, what ever length your hair was relaxed will be the length it will be natural. Hair on average grows about a half inch a month. so the average person will grow about 6 inches or so a year. All the advice she gives is great. A routine is more important than a product. 12 years natural and loving it.
