The only "Bad hair" is hair that has been damaged & unkept, all other hair is good hair. Short doesn't mean ugly and long doesn't mean beautiful. Kinky isn't nappy and straight isn't perfect. Love the hair you have, take care of it and it will serve you well. #SelfLove

It kinda stuck to me when you guys put "we didn't know our hair was curly." Same here. When I was younger, I was taught that my natural hair was called "nappy" and its something that should not be worn so I was relaxed ever since like 6 years old. Now I'm around 3-4 years relaxer free and I love my curls. I'm still trying to grow it out like you ladies and I'm trying to "learn" my hair but I'm very happy to finally be real! By the way, your accents, hair, and that blue nail polish>>>>> you just earned a new subbie! :D

I was the exact same way I had no clue my natural hair was actually beautiful. I'm adopted & my parents are white & they started me with relaxers when I was 4 years old because they had no clue how to deal with it. I just stopped 2 years ago, and at first it wasn't easy. I still straightened it every day, I just stopped with the chemicals. I would look at it curly & think it was so ugly. Now that I know frizz control products and techniques, I'm always getting compliments on my curls! I love accepting my natural hair & loving it. Plus it's way easier to manage for me!

A lot of people really don't realize how easy it is to comb through natural hair. When I first transitioned it caught me off guard how easy it was to comb through my natural hair versus my relaxed ends.
@leia7517
@leia7517 10 жыл бұрын
I know! But I hate when you're transitioning and there's that patch of hair in between your natural hair and relaxed ends that's literally hell to comb through. But I agree, people make it seem like natural hair is soo hard to comb when really all you need is a good conditioner, a wide tooth comb and you're good to go!
@funkiemunkytootiedo
@funkiemunkytootiedo 10 жыл бұрын
***** People just need to let go of the disparaging stereotypes. Even now I have family members that will go "Ooh child! I just couldn't do it!" or "Ooh, you got that rough hair. That Shaka Zulu hair!" And though I get that we've been saying stuff like this for generations as black people, there comes a time when we have to stop and realize that its not a good, funny, or cute thing to say. Just like the N word. I don't care if it ends in a "er" or "gga" it shouldn't be said. It demeans who we are as people. So many black women have grown up never knowing their real hair texture that dealing with a texture other than straight or lightly wavy seems difficult. And it is at first, but not nearly as difficult as they think.
@funkiemunkytootiedo
@funkiemunkytootiedo 10 жыл бұрын
Devin Domino Most Definitely. The comb would glide through my natural hair and snag and tangle in my relaxed ends. It was horrible. I have no idea how much of my hair I ripped out while trying to comb through my relaxed ends.

That's how it was for me too, My mom started doing relaxers in my hair when I was little, and when I got older i continued doing them myself because that's what I had been used to most of my life and I felt I needed it, because I thought without it my hair would just be an afro that's very hard to style. I didn't know I actually had curly hair, it wasn't until a couple yrs ago watching natural hair videos on KZbin that made me wonder what my natural hair/ curl pattern is like. I transitioned and it was hard. but now I'm 2 years natural and I love it!

Thanks for sharing ladies! My hair has been chemical free since 2001 and I love it. I did the big chop back then and never looked back. It took about 2 years in the beginning to get my hair "trained" but I went to a hairstylist who specializes in healthy hair so my transition was easy and manageable. I am so glad to see our black women embracing our natural hair and weaning ourselves off the "creamy crack"...LOL! Be blessed young ladies and keep the videos coming!

Great video thank you gals so much! My daughter spent a summer with her Dad and came back with relaxed hair. She was so upset because most of it had fallen out. Instead of telling me they hid all of this from me with a poorly done weave. I have been trying to keep her motivated as she transitions back to her natural state. This video gave her a sense of hope that she will have her long hair and curls back one day!

Thank you girls for making this video and explaining how to take care of your hair while transitioning. I just cut all my permed hair off, it took me a little over a year to transition and just like you said it was extremely frustrating. I had moments where I would say "I'm just gonna put a perm in" but I stuck with it and I love my natural hair. I deep conditioned like crazy while I transitioned. I continued to straighten my hair and fortunately didn't have to deal with any breakage or heat damage. PATIENCE IS THE KEY.

My daughters hair is long and naturally curly exactly like yours now she's a pro at styling a wash and go hair style but it took her years to appreciate her beautiful thick curly hair plus I didn't put chemicals on her hair as a child I just kept it braided and clean and did a braid out on her pony tails we didn't have the internet videos. I have been natural for almost two years I cut off the perm on the front and now I'm ready to do the back but I noticed my hair is growing everywhere that I cut off that dead perm it's true dead ends don't grow. It's s hard adjustment but it's worth it. Natural is best. My hair is nappy manageable and I love it. Thank you for the video tips I appreciate it so much.

I did the big chop last year and Ive been natural since. 3 months ago I made the dumbest decision to perm just the front of my hair so that it would blend with my virgin my hair. (I was natural 1 year for nothing). Now the front of my hair is so brittle and thin and damaged, while the back of my hair is so thick, curly and healthy. I learned from that mistake. Now I just wear lace frontal closures, and silk base closures. Now I have to wait and see if the front of my hair will grow out.

I had my hair in sister locs, then after a few years of wearing locs I decided to wear sew-in weaves. Lately I have been wearing my hair braided now I'm thinking about just going all natural. I'm tried of wearing weaves and spending so much money virgin hair. Thank you ladies for the tips, and continued blessings.

My sister and I both have long hair and have been getting relaxers since we were little. Both of our hair is very healthy and my sisters hair is VERY thick and strong. It is definitely possible to have thick, healthy, long, and strong hair, you just have to know how to treat relaxed hair. We take vitamins, I use minimum heat, and my sister uses No Heat at all. We often wet wrap our hair. Oh and drink a lot of water! :)

Beautiful hair and great vid. Thanks for sharing your tips. I'm on month 2 of transitioning. My aunt relaxed my hair at the age of 10 because I was told that my hair was "bad" and needed it. I am now 42 and going natural. My daughter has been natural for 3 years now and she looks amazing. She is really big on natural products and no heat to her hair. She keeps me going when I'm frustrated. Thanks for sharing the extra links.

It's crazy how I can relate to this video so much. I hadn't had a perm since my 8th grade year, I tried letting my hair do it's thing and just let it grow out back to its natural curly texture but I wasn't helping it go back to it. I was officially stuck and kind of tried to pay no attention to it but it just kept getting worse and worse not to mention even more dry. After watching this you girls really gave me hope ! I'm not gonna lie, I'm not a patient person at all but when it comes to transitioning, patience is key. In this case it's so worth it cause I can't take my curly to the scalp then ugly scrunched up straight ends at the bottom anymore. Thank you for such great advice. I'm ready to start my transitioning journey.

Although we are a lot older than you, I have an identical twin sister too. We've always had thick, long hair, and our grandmother & mother complained about how hard it was to comb our hair as children. We started getting relaxers at around 12. Now, as an adult, I was basically going at least 12 weeks between touch ups. Although my hair is healthy, my hair dresser told me last week that she is taking me off of chemical relaxers forever because she didn't like the way it made me hair feel after my last touch up- thinner than normal. I will be transitioning, and I'm so glad I found you guys. Love all of the tutorials, and I can't wait to get back to my natural hair.

Such beautiful girls! And such beautiful hair! I big chopped last October and I'm currently transitioning from perpetually-rebonded hair to embracing my naturally curly hair. You both are inspirational. Keep it up! :)

Using less heat is probably the most important. I haven't used a lot of heat in the past 7 months (sept-present day) and my hair has changed drastically. I went 3 months (nov-feb) and was amazed. I'm now going heat free for 6 months (I'm 2 months no heat right now since I straightened my hair feb 10) and once I hit 6 months I'll try for longer because I have a little bit of heat damage. But my curls have bounced back. I never knew it was curly like it is right now. I do have type 4 hair but the curls/coils are more defined now. I can't wait to see what my hair will look like once the damage is gone

Braids really helped my hair growth while transitioning. My hair grew like 2 inches in 2 months. Braid it and keep it moisturized. I just recently cut off my relaxed ends and my hair is shorter now but I'm happy! That transitioning was hell, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm looking forward to seeing how my hair will look in 5 years.

I've been trying to grow my hair. So I've been changing a lot of things I do to my hair like outing heat to it & sew ins. I went months & months with out putting heat to it. I also started wearing braids & conditioning it more often. After taking out my braids I noticed that my hair grew. So I plan to keep doing the conditioning, no heat, & braids throughout the summer. I also plan to get my hair trimmed professionally now that I watched this video. Thank you so much for your help!❤️

I am so glad I watched this video again. I've been relaxer free for a year now and was seriously considering getting a relaxer next month. But, Kendra you convinced me not too. It's a bit challenging for me because I am not good with styling my hair. But I will keep trying. Kelsey girl, when will you be putting up your updated twist out tutorial? I am eagerly anticipating it! I am still trying to learn how to flat twist.

I've been trying to convince my mom to let me go natural due to all the damage relaxers do to my hair. I haven't had a relaxer that didn't burn my scalp an my most recent one burned some of the skin near my edges. After showing her this video she more leaning towards letting me try.

You guys are so adorable. I am two months away from three years of being natural. Right now I am in a protective style; spring curl twists. I love being natural, and I transitioned as you guys did. I was not about to big chop my shoulder length hair, I wore weaves and braids until the last three and a half to four inches. This is one of my greatest accomplishments, aside from my beautiful daughter Megan, who was my inspiration to go natural, and my handsome son Kyle.

The hair looks great. I transitioned for about a year, then bc, the difference between the two textures was just too much, too frustrating and time consuming. I am loving my natural hair texture.

I feel you Rachel, my name is Rochelle. I have corse hare too, I'm here to tell you, you don't have to have the mixed hair, molato hair to go natural. You just have to have the right natural products and keep trying til you get the look you want. Going natural will soften your course hair and you will be amazed with the good results, good health, good growth and beautiful appearance you can have even with corse hair. Just don't give up, keep watching the videos and you will find someone with your hair consistency who had the success you are looking for. Remember natural doesn't have to be expensive, you can make your own healty ingredients. Just about any combination of oil and moisturizer with some holding jell will do. I won't lie to you, you probably won't get the results you want right away, but if you don't give up and keep at it til you find what's right for you, you won't regret it.

Yes my hair isn't the softest or that coarse. But finding the right products will make ur hair feel amazing my curls come out way more. I've been natural now for 3 months. Its actually really great I'm 15 and I learned since my hair is very thick that it likes thicker products during conditiong but when it comes to styling I use a thicker moisturizer and I add gel to lock in all of the moisture and it leaves my curls for a longer time than redoing my hair everyday.

In my opinion, this was an awesome video. I started transitioning in February 2014 because my relaxed part of my hair was so damaged, and I wanted to have the full-bodied, natural curls that you ladies have in this video. I love it when you ladies broke the steps down on how to transition my hair. I got so much helpful, start-to-the-point information from this video. :)

yeah, my hair shed way more when it was relaxed but I attempted to d a transition for about 7 or 8 months but then I ended up ding the big chopped. I had to cut off 5 inches. I've had my hair cut off for bout 2 months now. My hair barely sheds now and it is a lot stronger.

You two are right about transitioning hair being harder to take care of. When I transitioned, I mostly did up dos and spiral curls. I did not transition for very long. I transitioned in the summer of 2007. In February 2008, I had my relaxed ends cut off. I actually had my hair shaved in the back and it was short in the front. I wore my hair in short twists in the front. So, I have been natural since 2008 and I like it! I remember in 2007 when I was transitioning, it was kinda hard. These are some good tips. It is good that you two stress no heat. You are right about being patient. I love your hair. Thanks for sharing these tips with us.

I love you ladies videos. they have been very helpful since I started my hair journey 3 years ago. I too transitioned and I'm still in the process of getting rid of these raggedy ends on my bangs but all the rest of my hair is completely natural. At 22 years old my hair is at its healthiest its ever been and your videos are an inspiration to that.
