What I don't like is Shtisel having an American version. The original version is perfect and speaks to people from all over the world, Jewish or not, and we can notice in the comments here. @@yaelschlichting9601 I have the same problem with the more general term "Orthodox" as well. It was the Haskala movement that came up with it and it became popular in early Reform circles to describe traditional, i.e. halachically observant, Jews. Using your expression, the designation Orthodox "imprinted" the Ashkenazi world to the extent that eventually traditional Jews, who originally didn't like the term, came to accept it. My dislike stems from its association with creedal dogmatism, something that's much more reflective of the history of Christianity and its obsession with correct doctrine, weeding out of heresies, etc. Of course, Judaism has certain core beliefs, but historically we have been much more preoccupied with understanding how to apply Torah law than determining who's next on the list for excommunication. "Orthopraxy" more correctly describes adherence to Torah law, but I'm not suggesting we use a term that sounds like a discipline within complementary medicine !

@trollersofbneibrak27413 жыл бұрын
the actors were great dont get me wrong but it seems much more like a problem with the script. everyone just seems to be against each other for no reason at all and just randomly switch their opinions on things even in the same episode. also the fact that they try to go too far with the whole "portraying haredim as normal" to the point where they make them all gossipy (even though its a commandment for them to not speak it). i mean i would have preferred for them to focus more on the differences between haredi and secular society in a good way rather than trying to secular-wash them in a way. besides that, pretty much nothing that goes on in the show actually happens in real life (and i also get the show is supposed to be set in geula which is a more moderate community but the show goes too far with this moderation) i might have gotten a bit far with the initial statement to "never watch these shows", i would say avoid watching unorthodox and watch shtisel knowing its fiction and not actual reality, and that its quite innacurate Edit: I also see a lot of people mention the show's "cultural nuances", which almost all of them dont actually serve a purpose to the plot and get thrown away fast, and which are either quite archaic and irrelavant to modern haredi society or are only from a certain subsect of haredim. not to mention that they gave the characters in the show, 99% sure are litvish/yeshivish, chasidic clothing and nuances sometimes. this difference is only clear and blatant to one that *actually studies and knows haredi culture* rather than watching tv shows. i dont think that really matters much to the average viewer but its still dangerous if left unchecked
