From Sound to Subculture

How can goth be consistently distinctive when it’s so musically diverse? If goth is all about the music, how does that transform a group of people into a community based subculture? How do social spaces give rise to meaningful cultural substance? Can industrial, gothic metal and neofolk be considered goth music? If you want to dive deeper into the history of electronic music, music as noise, and how physical space affects music, you must become acquainted with Xenakis. Also, keep in mind that as far as the history of industrial music and EBM, as easy as it is to see Front 242 as an old school industrial act, the dance tracks we think of not only fit the EBM category far better but according to multiple sources, Front 242 self-identifies as EBM . I’m about half way through this monster episode. Interesting… thanks for your thoughtful efforts.
